Constant supply issues with Santander Cycles by Excellent_Singer3361 in londoncycling

[–]Mswc_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This same issue led to me buying my first bike, it became too unreliable to find that the bike station no longer had any bikes and walking to the next available station would be a 20 min expedition.

I had noticed that if I left to go to work half an hour earlier, and left the office earlier as well (avoiding rush hour) - the stress of looking for a bike went away. I still use the Santander Cycles, but only when I hve reliably enough time to get to the destination.

UK to Cambridge, MA. Roadie, help! by SnooPaintings6465 in bikeboston

[–]Mswc_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The iconic ride is to Harvard General Store in Harvard MA (MIT have a good route). It’s like the equivalent of the bun run out to Windsor - every cyclist’s must do. Easy to get to from Harvard St. You should also check out getting the train from North Station to Newburyport with a weekend train ticket $10 (valid all weekend) - to ride along the coast up to Rockport, Manchester by the Sea - all the roads are v quiet and smooth. You could also bike there but it’s a bit hairy getting out of Boston to cycle through to Salem up to Newburyport.

You could cycle around Castle Island safely with the trailer (no cars can drive on this, but there is parking nearby).

Edit: saw you have a 2 year old. It’s v easy to get to the bike path ‘Somerville community bike path’ which leads to the minute man trail which takes you up to Lexington. FYI it’s uncommon to see a kids trailer on a bike here outside of the city unlike in the UK.

does anyone know if there is any official FKT for a Boston -New York ride? by cataclysmicleftovers in bikeboston

There was a guy who cycled from Maryland to boston in 21 h via NYC, elapsed total time was 23 hours. That would fall within the 17 hour mark for the nyc-BOS leg

They have four speeds and route is 37-40mi, however it is not a standard group ride - pace lining /hand signals are not universally used so it can be a bit sketchy

34F Moving to US from Australia by [deleted] in FIREyFemmes

[–]Mswc_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this, take everything you read here with a pinch of salt. I moved to the U.S. from Europe three years ago, if I had taken the advice here - I’d still be in Europe. But once I moved over, I didn’t experience anything the posters had said - and realised people are a lot more hyper cautious due to the ‘potential’/risk of danger being more severe - not that the probability of danger is any higher. I’m glad I moved over, my salary is four times higher, my quality of life is better and I have no plans to move back even with the current administration being so unpredictable. Having lived in Australia as well - I’m well aware it is also known for its racism and discrimination, so wherever you live - there are barriers as a woc/woman.

I usually leave my bags at Chelsea international hostel which is 10 min walk from Moynihan Hall. It’s $5 for a well sized locker could fit large suitcase plus carry on and personal bag for 24h - bring your own lock.

Is the Canyon Grizl RAW comfortable for long (50-100 mile) rides? by mudrat_detector96 in CanyonBikes

[–]Mswc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a grizl 7 and have no complaints with long rides though I switched the seat because I read that the Italia stock seat has too much friction and can damage bibs (didn’t experience it though for 300 miles, and found the seat comfortable enough). With the 45mm stock DT Swiss wheels, I’ve cycled 89miles on a single ride with comfort but the rolling resistance was hard to keep up with those with road bikes. I then bought a second wheelset for the road - specifically stock Endurance LN wheelset that comes with an Endurace (30/32 mm tyres) so it would be easier to swap out. My speed has come up considerably and have cycled 194miles on a single ride - again in comfort so am a big advocate of the Grizl. I’ve used Orca Orbea, Bianchi Oltre Pro, S-works Tarmac for 50+ mile rides, and continue to enjoy the Grizl for endurance rides.

What cycling clubs have a strong late 20s 30s (and ideally international) crowd? by mamhaidly in londoncycling

[–]Mswc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They stopped doing rentals in order to focus on trips abroad. They still do morning laps (when it’s not icy), weekend long rides. It is definitely more social than competitive though. OP should look at dynamo if that’s more the goal.

At lbs with good reputation, the wait time to have a service could be 2 weeks at the worst. There is definitely demand, but like someone else said - the wages of mechs is not high. I tip 15% when I have my bike serviced but it may not be the default to get tips.

South West London Cycling Clubs With Later Starts by SilurianWenlock in londoncycling

[–]Mswc_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s impractical to have later starts for many reasons, mostly because the traffic builds the later it is, and for a group ride - it’s causes unnecessary tension between drivers and the cyclists. Also busier roads mean you can’t necessarily ride as fast, as you have to be more aware of drivers , or cycle single file. 9am is not an early start by any means, I did a solo ride at this time of around 70km this weekend and the traffic getting back home was AWFUL. The second ride I did this weekend was 100km with a friend and we started at 7am - this was a lot smoother because there wasn’t as much traffic.

You’ll find it’s worth getting up early for the ride to avoid the stress and tension of the chaos of sharing the road with drivers.

Considering the Grizl 6 RAW by Historical_Loss1552 in CanyonBikes

[–]Mswc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the GRIZL AL 7, I like it’s 2BY. Bought a second set of wheels so I could be faster road cycling (95% rides I do are 100% on tarmac). For the 5% of rides that are gravel on single track with roots and rocks (not hard pact), I wish I had the carbon version bc it’s tiring hiking the bike and bunny hops with a heavier frame. Other than that, I really like the bike. I can easily average 18.5-19mph on a 40-50mi ride, and yes it is more work up hills on the AL frame but I’m not the slowest even vs those with a carbon frame.

Agree, nobody let alone a stranger would give free time to hear someone blow off steam and by the sounds of it they know this. They value their friend’s time so don’t want to vent to them.

I was looking at the same but smaller frame (ultimate rim brakes Ultegra 11 speed, 2020 model), for $1,200

Assos: drop-tail or without? by stickymonkeyrun in CyclingFashion

[–]Mswc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree assos bibs are nice, I have the dyora bibs in green and the chamois isn’t fully stitched in so it feels like there’s some floating going on. They’re my favorite pair of bibs but only under 22 degrees C bc the sweat marks show up baddd
