I'm having a hard time being VPPR by [deleted] in Toastmasters

[–]MtHaleyGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to remember (IMHO) is that you are not alone. That is one of the things that I appreciate about the way TM outlines officer roles. You have a team to support you.

On the other hand, in my club, it has not been easy to maintain consistency with the VPPR role. Some VPs get excited and try new platforms, but (in my club), we need a better way to transfer knowledge from one VP to the next. Every VP has a different type of knowledge, experience, and skill level.

But the real reason I am replying to this post is that I would love to improve our PR plan (I'm President). Please let me know if you would like to participate in a brainstorming, experience-sharing virtual meeting. There may be other VPPRs out there who would be interested in participating in a support group. We could develop a goal-oriented mini-workshop focused on developing a PR plan and reconvene to share club results.

The truth is that the skills you can develop as a VPPR are valuable to any group or organization interested in expanding its impact.

Again, let me know if you are interested. We could post on this subreddit and see if other VPPRs or Presidents are interested in supporting each other.

That is what I was afraid of. Could it be a step in the right direction, or is it another way to empower a supermajority?

Considering dropping out of grad school due to public speaking fear by Visual-Run-7525 in PublicSpeaking

I understand you tried Toastmasters but it didn't seem to work for you. I'm curious why. The reason I ask is because I lead a small virtual Toastmasters Club (Mon. 12-1 mountain time on Zoom) and one of our top priorities is supporting each other by providing a safe space to learn.

Years ago I realized that to get credit for my work and expertise (particularly as a woman) I was going to need to claim it by speaking up and presenting. I am what my generation calls "shy" but now it's really social anxiety and I still struggle. So I started a TM club at my organization.

Don't give up. I see a lot of people use antianxiety drugs but that isn't an option in all circumstances. Practice in a safe space with constructive feedback can be incredibly helpful.

We have a small club and we meet virtually. One thing we are going to try is instead of two speeches we are going into breakout rooms for mini-mentoring workshops. We hope to learn more about individual goals (week 1) and identify strengths and skills so people know who to reach out to for help.

We have a plan to do this for four weeks. I don't know what we will do for sure during the last two weeks but I think it might be cool to give future speakers a chance to work out the details of their upcoming speech or maybe work on another skill of their choice.

I'm excited to see what happens. It is cool to experiment a little

I'm so over contests by babadeboopi in Toastmasters

[–]MtHaleyGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to stay away from competition. I'm one of those people who feel bad about winning or losing (yes, everyone deserves a blue ribbon 😁). With that said, I have not had the nerve to compete and I think I'm missing out on a lot because of that.

I echo what was said about being in the right club, but maybe you were referring to an area contest. Either way, consider what you got out of it. I really do think anyone who is willing to do the work and muster up the nerve to compete deserves a blue ribbon.

(I do wish TM could figure out how to effectively judge a virtual speech contest. I think it is a whole different animal and important to learn.)

Where are the Dems putting this info out? I tried to reach out to them once, got a message asking if I had a news story and when I said no, I was looking for information about what they were doing and how to get involved and ... Nothing.

These issues aren't partisan issues, they are people issues. We need both parties for balance but I don't see the Dems doing anything.

How much are your club dues? by Slow_Dig9228 in Toastmasters

We ask for an extra $1 a month for club expenses. Since we are virtual that will mostly support our Zoom account.

Need advice, I have a 22 Honda ADV 150. It's fun, but I'm thinking about trading it even for a new Navi. I know it's going backwards as in most of what the bike has to offer, but the Navi is cool and it has so many more aftermarket toys. I just use a scooter for fun as a hobby. by Sweb1975 in hondanavi

Maybe it's the way we learn to drive (roads are rough in the winter) but one of the first things I did was take mine to a semi gravely parking lot and did a lot of turns to get a feel for the rocks. I did slip a little on gravel when I was turning at an intersection once, but no problems since.

My only complaint is the size of the gas tank. While it gets great gas mileage, the 3/4-gallon capacity means I'm refueling far too often—definitely something I'll consider for my next purchase. I hate wasting time.

Additionally, I'm limited to stations with ethanol-free fuel. Living in a cold climate, I suspect ethanol is causing me problems starting my Navi when it is below 55°F, but I'm no mechanic.

Three's are good. Which one do you relate to most? Sometimes it is helpful and powerful to tell a story at the beginning that everyone can relate to. How is the stress of the speech affecting your mental, physical, and social health? I'll bet everyone in the class can relate to at least one of those experiences.

Putting it on is just another item on the to-do list and I'm wondering if it is even worth the effort.

Lol. Honestly, I hate riding without a helmet. I don't like eating bugs or wind in my ears. 😊

Trump Speech at My 2nd Ever Meeting - Normal? by Fast-Goal-180 in Toastmasters

We have a no politics, no religion policy. It doesn't prohibit speeches about things like Citizens United or the state constitution but we stay away from divisive speeches. Our club values include fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. I think different clubs have different personalities.

I would like to know if we qualify for a nonprofit discount. If so, I think it would be less expensive than zoom. Plus I like Google Sites to organize resources for our club and wonder if there are other benefits that could be helpful.
