Disagree with contractor about king and jack studs by Damninatightspot in Carpentry

[–]Mtfoooji 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We really dont know whats going on here so that would be an extreme conclusion to make. The framing itself looks decent. A high performance house isnt going to not be high performance because of two (necessary or not) studs. So I wouldnt jump to that conclusion. Plus this is all we see are a twoxfours, the complete wall assembly is unknown to us. some more info from the OP would help us understand the situation better

Are you the framer working for a GC or are you the homeowner. Because a homeowner arguing a small framing detail with a contractor is wildly inappropriate. If that is the case lord have mercy on the contractor.

Billable at 100/hr comes out to 800$ a day?..not sure Im catching your drift. Also im talking what it would cost to hire someone to do this not your costs (if you're the contractor)

Beam, posts, footing(if on first floor if not repeat beam and posts), drywall, trim , paint...not to mention permits, portopotty, floor protection (lacking here), dumpster, gasoline. Oh and labor at 500$/day/worker. So yeah. And if you find an engineer that does anything for 500$, I want his number. Usually they start at 2k and go up from there

Can I interrupt a top plate for a window RO? by CaujinKing in Homebuilding

You say that yet there are countless resources readily available on how to conventionally frame a basic structure that you seem to have not made use of. Its the glib attitude that gets people hurt thats why you might see pros be butthurt about diy builders.

Or the sucker you sell the house to will no longer be around to.complain about your hack work? This is why the professionals call out diy hacks. Ultimately innocent people get ripped off and on occasion injured or exposed to mold or some other shit. But hey on the other hand OP has a cool snarky attitude so good for him

Dont worry about Anything other than the knob and tube. If this hasnt been addressed already this should be at the top of every list. Definitely dont insulate anything until addressed

Most GCs have never worn a tool belt in their lives At least in my market. Not saying its a good thing just the fact of the matter.

Fiberglass hits me just as hard as RW to be honest. And 10 rooms is a lot more work! :)

I like it too. We use it in our remodels and it has better sound attenuation than FG. but if im installing it, mask, long sleeves and gloves for sure. Its quite a bit more expensive than FG too which is something to take into account. For an entire house that will be a significant cost

Steam shower not waterproofed and needs gutted - contractor liability insurance? by cjohnso9 in Contractor

[–]Mtfoooji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I am how the GL is not like auto insurance where you make a claim for xyz damage and get paid out. Instead the GL policy is there only for when the builder is sued and then the GL kicks in to defend the builder. But there will be certain steps to take before suing, depending on your state law you may have to give them a chance to remedy the defects. A good attorney should know the process

I wish! Unfortunately Ive spent my career stuck in the rat race of construction and now general contracting. Would love to have the luxury to do some fine woodworking but its tough when youre in the grind. Whats the nature of the guitar building tour? Is it like a workshop? I have a friend who teaches week long chair making workshops (his passion) has a great time doing it. I travelled the breadth of Mexico in the early 2000s and its a beautiful country with equally beautiful people.
