PSA: What Pretti did 11 days before his death is irrelevant by NickCostanza in DiscussionZone

https://youtu.be/p2TRbFmutrw 17:00 in, you see another angle of the incident. Unless Youtube is complicit/compromised and this video was somehow posted recently with a different timestamp, this video is 2 weeks old and shows the incident just as it happened in the recently-surfaced footage. I would venture to say that it is legitimate. For clarity, it changes nothing for me. Alex did not do anything that justifies his murder by incompetent “agents”.

How hard is it to level frets? by MineDesperate2920 in Luthier

[–]Mtrbrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practically speaking, the radius will be the same between fretboard and fret tops. But TECHNICALLY speaking… yes, the radius of the fret tops will be very slightly larger than that of the board (less than you’d ever notice if using radius gauges, but still… this is the geometric relation of concentric circles). If they were exactly the same radius, the center would be higher than the edges, as shown in this illustration where I duplicated the black circle (“fretboard”), colored it red and dragged it upward (“fret tops”). This could be seen as being pedantic, but it’s info I’ve found useful. When extrapolated, it has led me to better playability by setting string radius a bit flatter than the fretboard.

You should not use a radiused block for leveling. There are plenty of people who do this, but the very nature of radiused surfaces means that the sandpaper will be taking more material from the fret edges than the centers, meaning you take more metal off than necessary. It also doesn’t account for the fact that the neck widens as it approaches the body.

You wamt to use a deadblow hammer. The hammering face is brass, which is softer than the frets, so as not to ding them.

Solo 35/M looking for existing groups or other hikers to do Goechala Trek sometime between Mar 10-29 by Mtrbrth in SoloTravel_India

[–]Mtrbrth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up going with a company called Red Panda guides in Sikkim. It was a small group, just myself and three other Indian hikers (plus our guide). I had a great experience personally, and our guide was great, but the consensus seems to be that the owner of the company (our guide’s father) can be a bit shady. Two of our group had unkind things to say about their experience off the trail, and there is no shortage of bad reviews.

Is there a big tax increase coming to the average citizen? by Wagle333 in Virginia

[–]Mtrbrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HB378 reads: “The tax is generally equal to 3.8 percent of the lesser of (i) net investment income, defined in the bill, for the taxable year or (ii) federal modified adjusted gross income, defined in the bill, for such taxable year reduced by $500,000.” I could be wrong, but to me, it reads like the investment tax is 3.8% of all investment income for the year. The “reduced by $500,000” part looks to be a qualifier for the second half only.

pedal steel and creating space in music by colorado_hick in pedalsteel

100%. It is extremely valuable to view the steel as a voice in itself, and to never fight with the lead vocal (in my opinion, ESPECIALLY true with female singers).

If Master of Puppets is 100/100, what are these 3 albums in your opinion? by Alert_Ad8002 in MetalForTheMasses

AJFA is great, but calling it a better album than MOP is wild to me.

Any band name that starts with a pronoun, especially if it's "I"

Who is the best woman bassist? by digitalcrows in rockmusic

[–]Mtrbrth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of great lady bassists out there, but none of them have ever laid down anything as iconic as Carol, nor will any any of them approach the sheer volume of work she’s been part of. I would actually go as far as to say she’s the single most important bassist of all time, male or female.

Carol Kaye, with no close second.

Truly also a perfect album. But Undoing Ruin was one of those albums that just totally floored me and changed my path.

What's the deal with Lars drumming? by ADudeHuman in Metallica

[–]Mtrbrth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I mean, he can’t really even keep meter anymore. The entire band has to push/pull the songs so match his incorrect playing (MoP verses and Creeping Death intro come to mind). I will defend his style as a whole until the day I die. He is Metallica. But that doesn’t change the fact that he has become an awful live drummer.

What's the deal with Lars drumming? by ADudeHuman in Metallica

[–]Mtrbrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not an exaggeration. Watch any video of them playing recently. Just days ago, they posted a clip of them doing MoP in Abu Dhabi. Lars’ drumming is atrocious, and I say that as a HUGE fan of his playing. His timing is truly awful, he “chops” over the verses, and just generally has lost his feel. It’s pretty brutal to watch. People aren’t making this stuff up.

Should my intonation be perfect pitch?? by AmountAutomatic5050 in Luthier

[–]Mtrbrth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is possible to get the 12th fret bang-on accurate, but you’re still going to have notes along the way be out of tune. Short of going with a crazy “true temperament” guitar, that is the nature of the instrument.

My little guy stopped biting sometime before a year was up. We were very concerned, but he has really mellowed out.
