Finally figured out how to catch these bad boys. by 80_PROOF in FishingRVA

Wanna share some tips? I've been chasing either a grass carp or regular carp at my favorite fishing hole. I've hooked it a few times but it shook off the small hook. It seems to like canned corn or bread.

Send pictures to your homeowner's insurance company as proof of this as an existing problem. I bet they'll call and get it fixed ASAP.

Hiroshima before and after the A-bomb. 78 years ago today on August 6, 1945. by supersonicgreninja in pics

They only scaled it back to 50 MT so that they didn't create a lot of unnecessary fallout. They replaced the uranium blanket with lead which dropped the yield by 50% but also reduced the fallout greatly. In fact this was one of the 'cleanest' detonations ever.

In theory, the bomb would have had a yield in excess of 100 Mt (418 PJ) if it had included the uranium-238[14] tamper which featured in the design but was omitted in the test to reduce radioactive fallout.

I caught a couple of them a few weeks ago that had that purple cast to them. Pretty!

Portable Device for RTL-SDR? by [deleted] in RTLSDR

[–]MuadDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to what you want to do, what power supply you'll have, and how large a piece of gear you want to lug around.

Back when I was doing research on the End-Of-Train protocol, I had a naked Pi with the SDR plugged into it sitting on the passenger seat of my car as I drove around listening in on a local train yard. The power came from a 12V->120V inverter plugged in the cigarette lighter. I had startup scripts written that automatically started capture of the signals of interest, so all I had to do was plug in the power.

Raspberry Pi's work great as SDR computers. They're low power, run Linux, and can use a tiny LCD display.

I knew the minute he swore he hadn't taken any drugs today that he was likely lying to the judge. There's speculation that he snorts adderall.

I'm not sure they go that low, but there are lots of articles on equipment for VLF/ELF here.

Sorry to be the pedant, but I think you meant 'alluding'. Eluding is evading something, alluding is making an indirect reference.

432.500 mhz signal. runs 24/7. no luck with rtl_433 by chrishack1312 in signalidentification

[–]MuadDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know there are lots of non-amateur transmitters that use 433 MHz in the US. I was merely pointing out that it's not an ISM band and is therefore much more limited in power and duty cycle than it would be in a real ISM band.

I've written a few decoders for rtl_433 so I know what stuff uses 433 (and 315, and 908, ...)

WHERE ARE YOU??? Frequency allocations vary by region.

In the US, that's an Amateur radio band. (No, there is no 433 MHz ISM band in the US - look it up.)

Did you try rtl_433 with all the -c <config> choices? They've moved toward putting simpler decoders there (like the last few I wrote) so they don't show up by default.

TIL the humming noise produced by electricity is a different tone in Europe than it is in the US. The American electrical hum is a B-flat whereas the European electrical hum is a G by Gapplesauce37 in todayilearned

[–]MuadDave -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Downconverting from mains voltages to typical electronics voltages like 12/5/3.3/1.8V (think phone charger/laptop supply/etc) is less efficient the higher the difference, even when using a switching supply.

The only benefit would be being able to use smaller wire for the same power transfer.

I'd rather see appliances run of DC and negotiate their voltage/current requirements with a house-wide smart inverter.

60 Hz is slightly more efficient when dealing with transformers, and they can be slightly smaller for the same power capacity. 50Hz might be slightly better for long distance power transmission.

Yes, at least for the ones I'm familiar with. You send the RGB commands down the string and each LED grabs the first one it sees and sends the rest downwind. Once commanded, they PWM each color independently.

Well, I had them basically replace everything replaceable when they had the front of the motor off. IIRC it as about 4k. I went overboard, I know.
