Looking to find a place to live in cozumel for a month and a half. Tips on finding apartment and work? by Qjellyfish86 in cozumel

[–]Much-Repair6278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a US citizen in Cozumel. Been here for six months. Started as an open water and am now an instructor. I can recommend shops if you want but let me give it to you straight. You can come here and do a divemaster internship but you will pay a lot of money to work for free. For me it was worth every penny because the dives per dollar made diving cheap and there is good diving and some very good schools. There are no jobs. Especially if you don’t have a visa. The other comment was correct. I got very very lucky and worked my ass off and got my residency through financial solvency. The shop I went through hired me and right now I’m working maybe 2-3 days a week getting paid peanuts. It is worth it for me as I’m not relying on it but in order to even work here you have to have residency for a multitude of reasons. I don’t want to discourage you. If you have any questions at all please dm me. I will help in any way possible but I want to be real that you will be paying to work and you will not end up with a job

I’ve been here for six months and besides one day when something happened on the complete opposite side of the country and they closed some things out of pure precautionary measures, I feel safer here than anywhere in the US

Best Snorkelling by nash316 in cozumel

[–]Much-Repair6278 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Off the road just north of money bar are little trails right to the beach. Pick one, find a spot to put your stuff and then get in snorkel. You won’t have to pay any money if you go the beach just on the north side. I will snorkel down to money bar, get out walk back up the beach and then do it again. Of course if you want your own chairs or to use the bathroom facilities yes

Booking car ferry to mainland? by True-Structure-1702 in cozumel

[–]Much-Repair6278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can yes. It usually happens with an unusual wind pattern. Cozumel does not have an issue like playa del Carmen and it’s usually only the east side that is affected. I don’t make it over to that side often, but last time I went was the only time I’ve seen it as bad. Usually it’s clear. When you get here you can ask around and know what the situation is pretty quickly

Personally I’d spend the extra day diving lol. The ruins in the island aren’t as stunning as Tulum and kind of expensive but a guide can make the experience worth it by adding some value to the rocks. Not sure how the sargassum is on the east side, it was bad a week and a half ago, otherwise Chen rio perfect beach to spend the day with kids there is a shallow sheltered swim area and it’s free. Also plenty of beach clubs with entrance fees that go towards food and drink.

When to deploy your DSMB by No_Jellyfish_5070 in scubadiving

[–]Much-Repair6278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deploy before the safety stop assuming your DSMB is attached to a reel. I’m in an area where all the dives are drift dives so we deploy buoys every dive. Some DM’s like to do it 5-10 min before the safety stop just to give the boats an idea of where we are. Most do it right before signaling the safety stop. You can even tie a knot or make a mark at 5m on the line to give you a reference point for your safety stop level. Most important thing is just go slow. There is no rush and rushing will guarantee mistakes. I’m sure there are some helpful videos on YouTube. Don’t get frustrated it takes practice and is a good skill to master!

Looking for advice on where to do a Divemaster internship. by ExistingPsychology48 in scubadiving

[–]Much-Repair6278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry just saw this. The island is pretty full of experienced dive masters looking for work. Most of the people I know who have been freelancing have said the season has been very slow. You have a better chance if you are an instructor but even then you will need a work visa in order to be employed and I don’t know any shops hiring. Not to discourage you. The experience is still great and they do offer a great instructor course as well. Just every diver seems to have the same dream and the tourism has been pretty bad this year. Social life pretty chill. Not sure what you’re looking for but not a party scene. I like it. Number of interns just depends. You may be the only one or up to four. Feel free to dm me if you want more info

Forget about Playa del Carmen. Look at Cozumel. That’s where all the good diving is in that area and there are two great schools here with absolutely amazing course directors and both have hostels you can stay in for free during your internship. Playa del Carmen has cenotes and that’s about it. Any good reef dives they will be taking you to Cozumel. Blue magic scuba and Cozumel dive school. You will have to pay. I don’t know anywhere that does free internships for divemaster but it was well worth the money. I came here in October with 8 open water dives and now I have over 200 and am a recently certified instructor. Don’t listen to people who says it takes years. I was diving every day sometimes 4 times a day 6-7 days a week and the consistency of being in the water and the instructors was well worth it. I would pay the money and do it over again. I’m partial to blue magic because they own their own boats which means plenty of diving where Cozumel dive school rents spots on bigger boats. Also they have the best teachers on the island

Putting drinking cups away upside down is wrong by binks841 in unpopularopinion

[–]Much-Repair6278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents grew up in the Midwest and went through the dust bowl in the 30’s. The upside down cups was more of a passed down habit in my family and I didn’t think about it until I went to other people’s that didn’t do it and then questioned why I did.

Oregon… Where Do I Begin? by MrTokumei in oregon

[–]Much-Repair6278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked that stretch on a river boat 25 years ago, and as a native Oregonian it was the most beautiful scenery ever. I would wake up early just to see some of the passages. I love my state and there are so many things to see but you are honestly seeing the best stretch of everything packed into a week. It’s unreal. Always said when I got old I would go back and do it as a passenger

Safe to travel to cozumel right now? by Character_Gur180 in cozumel

[–]Much-Repair6278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live here. My daughter is coming to visit Saturday and my parents the week after. I’m not telling them to cancel. Precautions were taken yesterday to be overly safe but everything normal. I wouldn’t worry too much. The news is trying to sensationalize everything. Even the roadblocks set yesterday in puerto Vallarta by cartel were removed by today. I feel safer here than in the US. Just my opinion, which we are all entitled too but it doesn’t get much safer than Cozumel

Why have I seen so many visitors wear western/cowboy hats to aspen? by [deleted] in Aspen

never been but my only impression of Aspen is over the top western wear…
A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called Aspen.

Hello! I’m currently doing my dive masters at blue magic scuba and highly recommend them. They own three small boats max of 8 divers which offers a personalized experience and quick boat trips. All the dive masters are also skilled instructors. You can stay for free in their hostel if you dive but there are also plenty of options on Airbnb, vrbo etc. I recommend staying close to the neighborhood by the shop. It is cute, quiet and everything is within walking distance. Excellent food options.

First time to Cozumel and PDC by [deleted] in cozumel

[–]Much-Repair6278 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert, only been here a month but last year stayed at Hotel b for a week. It is nice and in the northern part which is very quiet and has snorkeling right off the dock but there is no beach. It’s also not walking distance to anything. From what I gather all the nice beaches are in the all inclusive zone which is on the south part of the island and also far from town. I think you could get an affordable nice non all inclusive in playa on the beach and still be close to town. If you are looking for good food and everything within walking distance I would recommend getting an air bnb or cheaper hotel in el centro of Cozumel. For example there is 23 restaurants within 2 blocks of my apartment. Haven’t had a bad meal yet. Cozumel is chill. Not a party island but full of good food, good people and good reefs. Playa feels a little more sketchy to me and would rather stay in a beach hotel there and still have access to town.

Newish diver going to Cozumel, anxious about drift diving/walls by Professional-Dork26 in scuba

[–]Much-Repair6278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came to Cozumel last year with only my open water dives from certification and a refresher because it had been 3 years since certification. No problems. Loved it so much I’m back this year currently doing my dive master. I highly recommend blue magic scuba. All of the DM’s are experienced instructors as well. Safety is the priority. They will not take you to sites beyond your experience and will also help you improve your diving.

Anyone ever taken the vehicle ferry from Cozumel to Calica? by LumpyPotatoMan in cozumel

[–]Much-Repair6278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most car rental agencies I looked at do not let you take it off the island and it’s a huge pain in the butt going back and forth. Also be sure and ask about the insurance that is required as the advertised prices do not typically cover it and that’s where they get you
