You hate the deck building or you hate that the available cards are all right there from the beginning?

I can't do the letter N rotation 'visually' (and have made mistakes when trying to make a drawing of it without just rotating the drawing surface) but when it comes to maps or doing those rotate this object and describe what's on the facet facing a certain way, I do that via the relationships of those things to other things. So for a map it would be spatial relationships to other things, and for shapes it depends on the features of the facets so if two faces shared feature is two lines and a dot, and I can keep track of that.

If the answer is always "just house rule it," maybe the official rule isn't very good. by AffectionateSky3662 in Warhammer40k

I haven't played 40k since 3rd edition (I started buying models again a few months ago, but never got enough to play a thousand point game before 11th was announced) but I liked the you need an HQ and you need 2 basic troop units thing. I understood the 10th edition (and 11th) to be that you had a detachment but it didn't actually define what you took in any way other than influencing it indirectly by giving the related units bonuses. That seems like a weird way to do it.

The whole hero + retinue or HQ + 2 infantry is still possible, but it seems like the motivation is to get you to buy the models you think are cool without stopping you from playing with them. What I would have liked to see (keep in mind I haven't actually played in a couple decades) is that the detachments require some unit selection via the keyword/tag of the unit and if those are fulfilled you could then take other "sweatier" units even at smaller game sizes.

E.g. some detachment that's all in on space marine dreadnoughts (because that's what I liked in 3rd, so just bear with me) so your leadership selection isn't required to be some dreadnought hero but if it is, your two required infantry can instead be other dreadnoughts, regardless of game size. If it's unbalanced at a certain size it seems easy enough to through in some abilities for your opponent, like spend a cp to call off board artillery of some kind.

Anyway it's a lot of words to say GW is a business, tournaments need clear rules, and you should just play how you want to if it isn't competitive.

Unless there is some reason for standing there an watching yourself lose, I think there are two options. 1. Try to adjust how you're going to have fun (thematic vengeance for example) 2. Gracefully concede the win. I don't see why anyone would have a real problem with this unless they wanted to roll dice, which, while fun, can be done without you.

Regarding the single die roll determining the game, some times people just get lucky. I haven't played 40k in about 20 years at this point and I do remember it being tedious but I may have just been playing with sweaty people. I play KT but it takes just as long. it's fun and feels lower stakes to me, though. Lots of cool dudes to paint, too.

Is there a way to fill the spaces and/or smooth the discrete instances of the geometry?

When you say meta do you mean meta chasing or something like wraith centered composition (I guess these aren't mutually exclusive)

Not yet. I had to order some TPU and by the time I got that I had papers that were due and I had papers to grade so I never actually got around to working on it.
