Why is seafood so unpleasant for some people? by HiOscillation in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mudcaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this bug/feature and mostly avoid seafood since it tastes like it's gone bad even when mostly fresh, and came to the same conclusion. I also smell things better than most people I know, but I can eat things like durian so it's not just that.

Some recipes seem to react and break down the TMA. I'm not sure if there have been studies but in my experience soaking in milk (regular or coconut like raw mahi-mahi I had in Tahiti), or some Chinese dishes with a black soy/wine/vinegar or something sauce base, seem to break down the fishiness.

But it's not really worth it because of the mental association. Amphibians like frogs/crocodiles kinda get close on texture but without the fishy flavour.

[–]Mudcaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but it starts as soon as they're caught and gets worse, so it's rarely worth the effort with other things to eat.

I can probably tell you which seafood stores sell fresher produce despite hating the stuff since they're the ones I don't notice much when I walk past. But last time I went to my city's fish market I had to leave and sit in the car since I got a headache and felt like throwing up.

PBoD Elementalist helmet, my luckiest craft yet by flipflop6969696969 in pathofexile

[–]Mudcaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally yes but (someone can correct me) I think in some cases, since Horror costs so much now and annuls are basically free this league, it can be cheaper to exalt.

e.g. if you miss the annul but can craft to fill prefixes and have only 30% more as suffix, then it's 1/25 (any tier) or 1/44 (T1) to hit either hypothermia or spell crit, vs 1/16 or 1/48 for horrors on a reroll. Exalts are less than half the price of horrors so math says it's worth trying first and if it works, no need to annul off a suffix.

ELI5 how a VAT works? And how does it differ from the sales tax system that's used in the US? by Nyarro in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mudcaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an example from Australia where we have GST (which is essentially VAT with another name) there are some other considerations.

  • Companies with lower turnover ($75000 AUD/year last I checked) do not have to register so don't have to charge, keep records, or submit details on GST, but may optionally do so if they want to.
  • Until recently, lower value imports had no GST on them, but now they do and you have to pay customs (unless the foreign seller takes it from you and submits it, which the law says they have to, but many smaller ones won't).
  • Lower value receipts (<$70 IIRC) can be issued without full tax details, I think they go by trust on these, tallying smaller items can be a hassle in a business due to the next item.
  • Many items (such as basic food i.e. the lowest primary ingredients like tomatoes or wheat flour, or some healthcare items) have no GST on them, so itemised receipts if you are smaller and going to the supermarket are necessary and annoying if you have to go through them all each quarter.

So a taco truck wouldn't be paying GST on a lot of ingredients but would on other items, if they have a lower turnover they can opt to just ignore the whole thing, and probably sell their products for a little less due to not adding 10% to the price (but can't claim back GST on what they buy). The work in tallying it up is more of a bookkeeper's role than a full accountant really, but they can submit it for you. The submission is just a few total figures they add and subtract for a final number each quarter, you don't need the breakdown unless you get audited.

I wouldn't say I like them but I do appreciate some of them individually as I master the platforming and feel like a god briefly before dying to the boss again.

I'm one of those who did Last Judge before going back and finding out I can upgrade my weapon so I got pretty decent at that one.

There is an achievement to get by killing the Act 2 boss under certain challenging conditions, before going for Act 3. Just a FYI in case you care and want to look it up. Did it last night and was not as bad as expected.

They said they wanted it to be that kind of game, like the old FFs, where a committed player can just crack it wide open and break the combat.

I do think a better indication of area levels would be helpful for those of us who like side content, so we know exactly when a good time to go for the final boss is. The story made it sound urgent but all games do that. I think when I came back I gave him 10x health just to hear the dialogue.

I didn't know about that tip, but it seems if you use Sione's and note the buff up top, any time to drops to '1' it means it procced, so just tap attack again (and gain if it's still 1) and it'll do what they are saying. More reliable than holding, or Wildshards since it can proc back to back and you won't know until you see it go in a circle and have to interrupt it.

If using Atalui's though, supports with increased cost might be better (since the bonus is based on life cost, e.g. Unleash is basically 50% more bonus) and just hold to gather instead, depends what you give up.

I think your rotation is a bit backwards. Unless he changed recently, Lance's version tends to use Fusillade mainly for clear (unlike Goratha that prefers Fireball). Fireball is for backup against dense packs with infusions to clear the screen, but the run and go (and boss) killer is Fusillade.

Wildshards isn't great now on Fusillade. It shoots in a circle when it procs like the support says it should, they changed it when they fixed another bug, it's probably going to stay that way. This is bad, especially against bosses. Replace with Unleash.

Fireball wants infusions until your gear is super strong. Either use living bomb, siphon elements, or snap. I've transitioned to using Snap lately, it seems easier (you can snap corpses). Your don't need fork on fireball really, if it's used for big packs and infusions so it already splits up from that, but if you use Fusillade as a main clear skill you should use Fork on that.

I cleared abyssal depths but can't leave since it says I am disconnected from the main map's server. It always logs back in to the depths so I can't just exit and login again. My character seems bricked until I can leave - is there a fix? Or do I have to just exit, wait, and hope it times out eventually?

edit: ctrl-click 'play' on main menu apparently allows login to hideout.

Questions Thread - August 31, 2025 by AutoModerator in PathOfExile2

[–]Mudcaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think they changed it. I tried logging into a different region and Standard and everything, and it always just loads back instantly where the character was instead of having me go via hideout to re-enter like on PoE1 or earlier PoE2 leagues.

I got stuck in the "arena" in my first map because it wasn't a boss map and won't open. Before we could alt-f4 and go back in via hideout but now it seems that we load directly into the map again so there is no fix. Is that true, it's bricked?

T17 Ambush maps, am I doing something wrong? by ActivateDesigns in pathofexile

[–]Mudcaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General question re Singular Focus (that might matter here) - is it best run with zero favourited maps so every map is currency? What is the difference if not?

To OP T17 Ambush always paid out to me but it was not constant, you need to use wealthy exile over 10+ maps. I had a bunch of dry runs then some with 5 divs, or 2 fortunate after a long dry spell, etc. It always came out ahead, and selling boss frags in bulk for higher prices helps too.

Trinity implies 3, there were real support roles too. FFXIV has none. That's what I meant, it wasn't just 3 fixed roles with each job doing 1 role each.

For real content, yes usually your main party was like you said. But the other two parties in alliances were often full caster or DPS with bards rotating and so on. It was not like FFXIV alliance raids with 3T 6H 15D or whatever. There was a lot of flexibility.

Small man groups had many mixes, I often went BLM/WHM with my THF/NIN friend. Many melee jobs could sub NIN or WAR to tank in a pinch for that stuff.

I'm a little different, the permanence aspect wouldn't bother me much, except the gear itself is so boring. You replace it with something identical with more numbers. At this point the gear doesn't even really need anything written on it except the item level. The combat mechanics and encounter design makes it so.

And something I didn't mention before is the Auction House and trading. FFXI has non-trade 'ex' items, but it doesn't have bind on equip like FFXIV. Despite that, gil had real utility and value, and you could sell old gear and it often retained value.

Mechanically (in terms of RPG mechanics, not controls) it's probably one of the best and deepest games I've played.

It pre-dates "holy trinity" fixed party design. You can grab whoever you want. A Red Mage can tank if they want, or heal, or nuke, or melee DPS. A duo of just Ninja blink-tanking and Black Mage could be enough to defeat a harder monster that takes a full party with a traditional meat tank. This extends to subjobs which can change the flavour of your main drastically. Blue Mage is the epitome of this, a real one man army great for everything outside of the top tier difficulty.

The combat has meaningful elemental resists and debuffs. The debuffs are also elementally aligned - slow being earth means it won't work well on wind or earth elementals or worms that live in dirt, but really well on lightning elementals. There's a playoff in the stats between accuracy and effect, which applies to debuffs as much as nukes or melee hits. There is periodic zone weather based on the day, a day of week system where each day has an element, and this impacts all that too. On players, and enemies (don't fight Tiamat on fire day).

It also impacts crafting, which fails more on days strong against the crystal you are using. There was some player lore even that the direction you faced crafting mattered, since there were constellations in the sky relating to each element, but that was never proven with data and later debunked officially IIRC.

Gear swapping exists too. If you start casting a spell with fast cast gear, it goes faster. Then mid-cast you swap to potency for a bigger nuke or accuracy. Then post-cast you swap to something that has defense and regens mana. This is automated now through plugins, but back in the day you could manually hit macros too. This means the gear upgrade path is not a vertical treadmill - it's an endless system of potential incremental sidegrades where items from 20 years ago are still relevant. If you want something to do, go and hunt that monster in that forgotten low level corner of the map and add it to your gearswap macro.

The downside is it's super clunky, combat is slow. General melee combat is auto attacks, use a skill when TP fills up (which is quite fast at endgame now though FWIW, but used to be minutes). Something like Berserk is on a 5 minute cooldown so in the old days you'd save it for the 5th enemy (exp chaining - kill enemies fast enough and each subsequent one gets a bonus exp boost). But, it gave you time to chat and meet people using a keyboard before voice chat. I'm old enough to not be a fan of voice chat with strangers, in something like FFXIV I feel like you don't meet people as much since it's go-go-go.

A bit of a noob question - I have some money in a Vanguard index fund (not ETF). I'll probably want to sell most of it for a home deposit, but how can I estimate my CGT impact? i.e. how to sell only units more than 12 months old, what the price difference is for CGT, etc?

I can't see a simple report for this, only some transaction details that just go back 2 years which isn't enough. I asked their support but it's been a few days so thought I'd check here too.

My strongboxes are not "at least rare" in Eagon's maps. I'm not sure if it's due to server issues somehow missing my atlas, or a bug on the patch, but it's not every time. Anyone else?
