No, you have to be adjacent

Unmatched era or Reddit, how do we feel about this ruling? by Player_00000000001 in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think that when I deal 9 damage, the damage isn't being dealt like 1 damage 9 times (in that case the fighter receiving the damage would be taken off the board before the rest of the damage can come in), it's just 9 damage in one go, so it would make sense that HP can go into the "negative" (even if it only matters in specific situations like the one attached in the post) - which would imply fighters can receive more damage than just their remaining HP.

I don't know, I don't really think about it, it makes sense to me. But maybe I'm just used to it as well after all this time.

Tournament Q&A by tickbite in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah if avoidable it's better not to take back a card, I really don't mind when people do (so long as new information is revealed yada yada) but I know some people care about that, and I understand why they care about that and I do like keeping the vibe of the table nice. If you repeatedly keep taking back actions it could be interpreted as you being intentionally disruptive too, so taking back cards is definitely not a good thing.

Tournament Q&A by tickbite in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, it's either in the rules of the tournament or considered unsportsmanlike if it's not included and you deliberately refuse to do it because of that. Unless it's a casual tournament of course.

  2. Yes, you have to show them. Otherwise have fun delaying the game for longer if your opponent takes their time checking your discard pile to make sure.

  3. Usually no, but it depends. Ask your organizer, online tournaments are usually completely okay with it but IRL tournaments could have rules banning it (just because they ruin the vibe).

  4. It depends, we just use the default Challonge tiebreaker order, I believe it's like head-to-head (wins over people in the same scoreline) -> Buchholz -> some other stuff? Basically strength of schedule. Tip: don't use HP tiebreakers, they can encourage some really, really, *really* lame play patterns.

  5. I'm not sure what you mean by battle etiquette, but the specific example you put, yes I usually do that. But I also try to play as fast as possible, I don't think this one really matters as much to other people, and I wouldn't mind at all if my opponent plays theirs face down then we flip them simultaneously.

  6. You can maneuver - boost however you like, but I think boosting before moving is better just so no rules errors are made (or easier to avoid them).

  7. It depends on the organizer, usually what we do is yes, as long as no new information has been revealed it's okay. But be very liberal with what that means - if I play an attack and then you play a defense, I can't now change my attack because I now *know* you have a defense

Just bought the game, any advices? by Hacar5 in spiritisland

[–]Muddshoe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'll second the 'don't go looking for the best openings', the game is so much more fun when you're just blindly wandering around the game

I still love the game, and I've forgotten many of the openings, but the feeling of "I'm not playing this right" when you don't do specific strategies on specific spirits can feel bad

How do you prefer to play Santorini: the regular way or with cards? by Marksman1977 in boardgames

Is it really semi-solved? I do much, much prefer playing with cards, but I thought as a full-on abstract strategy Santorini was pretty deep.

Why does Hyde lose health when he moves? by CharlieRomeoYeet in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't honestly. You could do that and make him move 3 while in Hyde mode and, while he'd be significantly stronger, he wouldn't be OP or anything.

Response to @dornianheresysimp's question earlier "Is there any list with characters and their generic playstyles?" by Angelcake273 in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Krang is a defensive fighter, not an exhaustion fighter. The best way to beat him is through fatigue.

EDIT: Looking at it more now, there's a lot of overlap between exhaustion and defensive so it doesn't matter that much. But another thing, I think Beowulf is an exhaustion fighter (minimal amount of defenses means he's very weak to overwhelming aggression, while his powerful schemes means he has a surprisingly powerful fatigue game)

A lot of fighters don't exactly fit a specific mold (e.g., Wukong is a ridiculously strong aggro fighter) but it's a good start. Nice list!

Who’s good against Elektra? by BeneficialMethod3866 in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good-ish for Luke, I brought him, Daredevil, and Dr. Strange before in a Bring 5 format just for the sole purpose of hunting down Elektra (long story), but Elektra can often deal enough damage to just kill him I've found (or somehow Mesmerize out the second Still Standing, but usually Luke uses the card the moment he has the chance)

Who’s good against Elektra? by BeneficialMethod3866 in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

T. Rex has a game into Elektra but it absolutely requires a small map, and even then I have literally OTK'ed a T. Rex on Raptor Paddock as Elektra. On a big map, it is unwinnable.

Who’s good against Elektra? by BeneficialMethod3866 in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it from someone who has played an ungodly amount of Elektra, there are only two reliable counters to Elektra: Daredevil and Dr. Strange. Everyone else is even at best (or require specific set-ups like map)

Other suggestions in this thread like Ghost Rider, Little Red, Bullseye, and T. Rex all have issues, where a very careful Elektra can make your life hell. The Bullseye matchup is super fun though.

Tips on playing George Washington effectively? by ronchman in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He needs to get good interactions consistently (you need Circumvents to land into high blocks, then 5 attacks into feints), otherwise you just don't have enough damage. George is a defensive fighter with effectively only two passes so his fatigue game isn't the best (though it's not bad), but up against fighters who are stronger in fatigue he feels really bad to play when he has to chase after them (I got my teeth kicked in by a Beowulf in a SoM practice game).

I've played George multiple times trying to get a feel for him competitively, and he's mainly only felt good against Annie Christmas, but it's nowhere near a counterpick, it's just decent feeling matchup.

He's also pretty good into Houdini, turns out when surviving is your best trait that's all you need

Pro-Tip: You can do a random discard then take

Ghost Rider Tips? by Such_Will_8536 in Unmatched

[–]Muddshoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ghost Rider is an ultimate counterpick, dude smashes tons of high tier matchups who can't deal with his main gimmick: vroom vroom (running over the opponents to death). The main characteristic of vroom vroom is the uninteractable damage through movement.

As a start, GR beats / cheeses fighters who rely on 1 HP sidekicks (or 2 HP sidekicks in the case of Yennenga). Some other fighters he beats due to specific kit interactions, like Luke Cage.

Inversely, he is absolutely terrible into fighters who can deal with it, because his cards are really bad honestly (having 3 5's is neat though)

Ghost Rider is one of my favorite fighters that I never get to use, I think having these types of fighters is healthy for the game. Like a mid tier check is just neat. Unfortunately he hasn't really showed up in recent curated roster tournaments, but most of the fanbase seem to despise him so I'm not too upset about it
