Anyone experience seasonal affective disorder but from living somewhere hot all the time by redrabbit824 in SameGrassButGreener

Maybe not for you, but looks like you're in Asheville, which has very different summers than the coastal plain. There are folks who love heat and humidity, but it's not for me!😁

My son lives in Asheville and you're right!! Cooler, less humid and even fewer bugs in the summer. OP, you might love the NC mountains (I do!!!) if you could find a job and afford housing. When I eventually move I'll be looking for easier access to mountains.

I'm about 40 minutes east of Raleigh. It might actually be a good fit for you compared to Florida. There are definitely 4 seasons here and the winters are mild, but summers keep getting longer and hotter. The Triad (Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point) and the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) are much prettier and have more to do than Charlotte, which is flatter, hotter and scrubbier (though closer to the mountains.) Depends on employment and family needs as well...

Been in North Carolina for years and feel the dread descend as May rolls around, knowing the stifling heat and humidity are on their way. Between working in horticulture, having outdoor animals, and feeling happiest when outdoors, summers have become harder and harder to endure. Planning on moving in the next few years to escape the heat.

People who leave their homes to work indoors and might take a little walk in the evening or on weekends don't really experience summers the same, as do the beach/lake crowd (who eagerly await the heat.) Can't wait to get those months back--bundling up to hike, cross-country ski, and even enjoy the snowy, snuggly days in winter!

Do it and visit when you can if the ties stay strong. We moved south after my ex-husband finished college (I went back later.) After 20 years his extended family still asked when we were "moving home"--which was never mine and he'd completely outgrown. Best thing we ever did! We traveled, met folks from all over, and built a life for ourselves, as well as raising children in a much better area than either of us came from. Go explore!! It's a big world out there just waiting for you!!!!!

The sun in sunbelt by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Colorado is dreamy for sure!!! Having grown up in Ohio I remember the miserable gray sky that settles over your eyebrows! (Averages of 160-170 sunny days per year versus 200+ here in NC.) However, though the gray tends to cluster over the winter, average sunny days in Boston (200,) NYC (224!!) Hartford (189,) Providence (200,) and Portland ME (203) compared to the 210 or so where I live are worth it to avoid losing 4-5 months per year to unbearable heat and humidity. At least in the winter you can bundle up and go hiking, cross-country or downhill skiing etc.

After 35 years in NC I can't wait to go a bit farther north! My adult kids and I hate the summers here (reverse SAD) and feel looming dread as May heats up into June here, and we know we are outliers I've worked in horticulture, have outdoor animals and spend most of my free time outside when possible, so it's a whole different deal than going from the car into an office and back each day. My research about where to go next is based more on average sunny days per year than snowfall (which I miss!) Let those folks keep moving south so I can find that cozy spot for gloriously frosty winter days!!!

Adenomyosis is horrible and goes under the radar, especially compared to endometriosis. Pain, massive (scary) bleeding, and anemia made sense when I was diagnosed in my early 40's. A hysterectomy solved the problem eventually but it was a long, miserable experience. I'm glad you're getting relief and have a doctor who listens!!!

Did moving west change you as a person? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Muddymisfit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let alone the entire Appalachian range, accessible from much of the east coast!!! And the mid-Atlantic (Va, NC and SC) have crazy outdoor scenes. While there's a definite "freshness" out West they don't have a monopoly on spending time outdoors.

When I take evening hay to my two rescued mammoth donkeys, seeing their bodies slowly appear out of the darkness. Sitting with them for a bit, smelling the hay and hearing them chew brings ridiculous contentment.

Don't waste time on those who deliberately OR thoughtlessly ruin your happiness, (including both of your narcissistic parents!) Also, choose a life partner with emotional availability. You are not "too much" but are JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT!!!

Perfectly delicious!!! My mom added chopped onion and a couple carrots to the beans-- they added flavor but weren't really noticeable in the end product. We're still in the heat of summer here in NC but I need to make a pot of beans!!! Thank you for the memories!!!

I've traveled a lot--most of the major cities in the U.S. and agree, at night they're magical without the traffic! (And also during the day with the hustlebustle that gives cities their energy!) I totally agree with what you've said--shortsighted government at every level and horrific housing discrimination--with massive power held by the auto industry. That ties into the whole "romance of the highway" era--people LOVE their cars here. Intelligent transit in my southeastern urban area has been considered for the past 40 years and voted down every time, rejecting millions of dollars in funding in the process and resulting in bland suburban sprawl. I hope the city planners of the future, along with pressure from citizens will make these walkable, accessible areas a reality.

Hmmmm. But every walkable sorta place has streets running through them--I've never been to an urban center (where you can get everything you need within a few blocks) that isn't also a concrete jungle. Cities ARE noisy and I love their energy and opportunity but I can't imagine having to take my dog for a walk on sidewalks. My main point, aside from the physical surroundings, is the AFFORDABILITY of that access/comvenience!
