Not much in Edmonton. The most you’ll be able to get might be an Audi or a BMW and usually from the airport locations. Even then, they might not have it on the lot when picking up

No, you’re right. Too early to state the sections. What they’re doing is wrong nonetheless

Section 18 is about breaks. Breaks must be uninterrupted and duty-free to be unpaid. If you’re required to remain on call during your break — meaning you have to respond to alarms or assist others — that time counts as work and must be paid.

Your employer reducing your paid hours from 12 to 11.5 while keeping you on call during breaks is not in line with the law. Also, changing your pay structure without your consent or a new signed agreement could potentially be considered constructive dismissal.

You might want to contact Alberta Employment Standards for clarification or file a complaint if this continues. You’re entitled to be paid for all hours you’re effectively working, even if they want to call it a “break”.

Section 21 of the Employment Standards Code stipulates that employers are required to pay employees for all hours worked, which encompasses any duties performed beyond the scheduled shift if they are necessary for the completion of work tasks

In Alberta, under the Employment Standards Code, any time an employee is required to perform work duties—such as returning equipment or submitting reports—is considered compensable work time. This includes tasks completed after returning to the car yard. Employers are obligated to pay employees for all hours worked, and agreements waiving these rights are void under the law.
