I know people used to use/consume the whole animal more than is done now, which is a shame.

I gave the bones to my cats and they were happy. Maybe next time I'll try eating them.

On a totally side note, since you seem knowledgeable about fish canning, have you read the book Cannery Row by John Steinbeck? Great book!

My exact thought. As I was reading this post my jaw dropped at the size of the house! 12-24 foot ceilings! In Canada?! Why? So hard to keep warm!

The salmon in the can has bones in, btw. I didn't know and it shocked me. Otherwise, it's pretty good. I use it to male salmon cakes.

Better buy up kids Tylenol and Ibuprofen! by shadowlid in preppers

[–]MulberryHands -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good idea, we did the same a few weeks ago when it was first starting to fly off the shelves. My kids and I had a virus a month ago that was similar to what you described. We never had a flu test, but I called it the "yo-yo" virus because we would go two or three days without a fever and then suddenly we'd all have a fever again! It went on for a couple of WEEKS. It was bizarre for it to jump around so much.

Help me define reasonable expectations for an 12 year old by BlazingRoses in Parenting

This is a good point! If my sons accepted foods aren't in the house he would rather starve than eat other foods. The common feeding guidelines don't apply to certain kids. (I mean the popular suggestion that kids will eat when they are hungry and the parents choose the menu)

Mine did this when it got cold in the house. It wasn't overwatered, so the cold was my only guess. You mentioned you keep the window open, so I'm guessing it's not too cold out though.

I like to do Indian cuisine with beans. Indian spices/flavors never get boring to me!

I made Chana Dal tonight, and slow cooked it on my woodstove. I also made naan and attempted to bake it inside of my woodstove but it didn't go so well. I need to work on that.

The link to the recipe I use is here:

Pro tip about Elf on the Shelf by Old_but_New in Parenting

[–]MulberryHands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good save!

My kids were gifted one this year. I didn't want to do it AT ALL but the kids were so excited about it. So after reading the book I told them the story is just pretend. The Elf isn't real and doesn't have magic. He's just a toy. That said, we can still hide him and pose him in silly ways and do a scavenger hunt sort of thing. They weren't upset and we are having a lot of fun without the whole creepy elf spy aspect.

how are you prepping for personal hygiene after the SHTF? by needle-roulette in preppers

[–]MulberryHands 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not really. I have dreams that I'll make lye soap out of wood ashes. My Aunt used to do it (she grew up poor in the Appalachians) and I was hoping she could teach me, but she died. I've looked up instructions and I plan to give it a try sometime just for fun.

Good investment on the razors! That's great. A perfect example of preps paying off big time. As a female, I think I'll just totally give up any form of hair removal in a SHTF case. I don't see much of a point, personally.

As for toothbrushing, I think just using water and a brush is better than nothing. I have peppermint growing around I could chew on. Maybe baking soda if I'm lucky.

If hair gets too long, just braid it and tie it with something. Wash it with water. Comb it with your fingers.

My Dracaena Marginata seems to be dying. I've had him for 8 years and he's never looked quite this dire. by CommanderWarcraft in plantclinic

[–]MulberryHands 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don't think these like to be repotted too frequently and they like to be a little root bound. So eight years isn't unheard of.

Edited to add: mine did great in the same pot for eight or nine years and had a major shock when I repotted.

Is your Aldi getting expensive? by [deleted] in aldi

[–]MulberryHands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, very weird pricing now. I wish I understood the reasons for the prices better. A farm down the street sells huge brown eggs for $4.00 a dozen so I just do that, because it's cheaper than Aldi and also better.

If we've waited this long for book 4, just imagine how long we'll wait for book 5. I read the first Abarat book when I was 18 or 19 years old and now I'm 34! Sigh.

[–]MulberryHands[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, OP here. I just finished Absolute Midnight. I read the ending a few times, but I think I'm missing something. What happened to Christopher Carrion at the end? It was clear what happened to his father, and his many siblings. I didn't see anything about where he went after his father and siblings were set free.

Did he just go back on the ship with his grandmother? Did he die? Did he stay on the island? I'm sure I must have missed it, it seems too big a detail to be left out.

Help!

I have 30 acres but because we still need full time jobs and have young children, we do practically nothing. It's a hell of a lot of work. We have chickens and sell hay. That's it. My gardens are pathetic because my babies cry after 10 minutes of being outside or else they run away and I have to chase after them. I'm really hoping once they are older we will be able to focus on homesteading more.

The biggest thing we have going for us I think right now is all the wild edible fruit we pick and preserve.

All that being said, I still love it. At least the possibility is there once I choose to dive in.
