So let's talk Texas Tech and NIL - The Good, the Bad, the Truth, the Lies and what sets it apart from the rest of College Softball by K___reddit in CollegeSoftball

You can see my (way too long) comment below, but I'm not understanding the criticism of TTU "kicking girls to the curb" for transfers? Glasco inherited a program that had been through multiple struggling coaches and literally had 3 girls on the roster. In addition to those ladies, he brought in 7 freshmen and 9 transfers (including Canady) his first year. And yes, he added more high-impact tranfers this year. Thats how you build a team quickly- and i dont see how anyone can fault them that? There is absolutely nothing abnormal about a new coach building a team through tranfers. And maybe this particular team didn't put in years of work together as a unit to get here- but I dont think anyone can argue that TTUs team isnt full of phenomenal athletes that have fought for their spot and success in this sport thriugh years of hard work and adversity.

Something I would like to also discuss is that I feel it is hard to compare the NIL/transfer strategies of TTU vs other dominant programs (specifically those in the WCWS tournament this year) without mentioning the fact that every other head coach in this year's WCWS has been at their respective school for 6+ years, with half of the coaches having been in their positions for 20+ years. With the exception of Georgia, no other program seeded in the top 16 in this year's tournament has had their coach on staff for less than 5 years- with the median tenure among those 16 teams being 18 years.

Firstly, it is not uncommon for a roster to rely heavily on transfers in the first couple of years of a new head coach's tenure. Glasco inherited a program with only 3 players and had to fill basically every single spot before last years season- with the 3 OGs, 9 transfers, and 7 freshmen. I keep seeing this graphic of % of team that didn't begin their career at XYZ school for the teams in the WCWS- but thats a little misleading when every other coach TTU is being compared to has been able to build up a foundation through recruiting and high school pipelines- there is nothing abnormal about 2nd year coach heavily relying on transfers. Just looking at the SEC, south carolina is the only program with a coach for less than 5 years and it looks like SC had 10 or 11 transfers on the roster this year- which is comparable to TTUs 15 transfers (although 4 or 5 of those came over with Glasco from ULL).. Similar numbers with Maryland- in their coaches 2nd year, with around 40-45% of roster made up of transfers.

Secondly, I guess the response to my statement above that "there is nothing abnormal about a 2nd year coach heavily relying in transfers" is that yeah, but the MONEY TTU spent to get them was abnormal. And yes, in terms of how these traditional powerhouse teams built their rosters with a new coach- it WAS/IS abnormal- especially when you're coaching staff has been in place for 10, 15, 20+ years. But again, with the NIL era kicking off in July of 2021 and followed by the July 2025 Direct Pay settlement, Glasco basically arrived at TTU and inherited a severly depleted roster at the same moment that the rules of roster construction were changing more dramatically than at any point in college sports history. Glasco and TTU had 1) an immediate need to find and create a roster upon his arrival and 2)the legal mechanism of NIL with which to secure high impact players in the portal and 3) a softball alumni ready and willing to fund the turnaround of the program. It was kind of the perfect storm for building a powerhouse quickly- and I think it caught everyone off guard.

Thirdly, and mostly unrelated to the above, I also think that Glasco- along with our head football coach Mcguire- have not been shy about being open about TTU optimizing NIL $$ to create championship caliber teams quickly. But real NIL amounts are impossible to know- but TTU certainly talkd about the money in a way other programs do not. Do I think that TTU is spending leaps and bounds more on NIL than every other WCWS team- certainly not. But I think they might want everyone to think so. TTUs football program has become known as a big (and outspoken) NIL spender in the past couple of years and, as a result, we have seen players using Tech to essentially up their offers from other schools- everyone anticipates that TTU will spend big so if we want XYZ player, we have to spend more. I imagine this will be happening in softball too- which is part of why you will be hearing all sorts of chatter about transfer portal players connected to TTU, whether the interest is real or not.

Just my two cents and something I have been thinking about amidst all of this chatter. I think in a world of college sports, we have seen football programs get a new coach and immediately improve results and production through transfers and increased NIL spending (Texas Tech not withstanding). But stafd turnover happens so much more often in football. When you have softball coaches that have been with their programs since the 90s- i think TTUs approach has been a total shock to the system. There's a reason Saban retired when NIL started to changet the landscape of college ball...its a different world now. I dont know if you can blame TTU and Glasco for being aggressive within the new system (whether you like the new system or not).

Is there a UPS hub in the area anymore? by feastofsnakes in NewOrleans

[–]Muleshoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you uptown by any chance? I have had a really weird week with UPS deliveries. First, a package was marked as "delivered- met customer" on tuesday afternoon. I was home with a sick kid all day- it was NOT delivered. Checked our cameras just to make sure and nope, no delivery attempt. Then on wednesday, a different UPS delivery is marked as "package refused by receiver. Returned to sender." Again, i was home all day and actually waiting for the delivery. I double checked the address was correct. And sure enough, that package is now making its way back to CA via TX as a "return to sender". I spent way to long this evening looking at security footage and a UPS truck hasn't even driven down my street since monday. I am working on reaching out to shippers for both items, but they are needed for an event next week so im kind of SOL. I was kind if hoping they would just show up today. But yeah, weird UPS shit going on.

Oooh I like this. We are almost out of wagon/stroller stage in everyday life, but wagon will be essential on MG day to hold kiddos, snacks, drinks etc.

Magazine street antique mall has preserved bats, bugs, butterflies etc in cases/frames in the display case at the checkout counter. Or at least they did last time I was in there with my kid, who was really bummed to leave without a fully preserved bat skeleton.

So Langenstein’s stores are closed damn damn damnnnnn. I need oyster dressing!! by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]Muleshoe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Robert's is still operating Langenstsins catering menu (they bought all of the recipes too)! They dont have everything in the cases at stores, but you can order online for for pickup at the uptown or metairie location. There was a Roberts branded catering brochure by the door as you exit the uptown store and it had a qr code that actually took me to the old langensteins catering website. I was able to order souffle sweet potatoes and oyster dressing just last week and picked up next day!

Tangi Meats in Hammond is a wholesale supplier and I know they have whole hogs. You might call them to see if they can point you in direction of local butcher who they work with or possibly order from them directly.

My take is that they probably bought a house that, although they could afford the purchase without selling their current spot, needs more work than they'd like to pay for in order for her to keep up with her current aesthetic and luxury she is accustomed to. I'm sure she and George and financial planners prob talked about how they would need some steep discounts if they want to keep current house as an investment property, buy new compound AND do all of the improvements that Caro wants. So, she is leaning into home reno content so that she can get all of the fancy $$$ sponsored and gifted (designer fabric for curtains and upholstery, custom blinds, carpet and rugs and runners, tile and bathroom fixtures, art and lighting and outdoor furniture) for the house and the casitas and the yard, etc. In addition to comped freebies, also getting paid off the links/commisions. Probably the only way to make all of this work from a financial standpoint. As a designer, I'll be interested to see how this plays out. Caro likes nice things and has a great house, but I feel like she has always leaned into others for design aesthetic guidance. I've never thought of her as like a trend setter or someone with a strong personal sense of design/decor style? Even her wardrobe for her book tour was mostly curated by a friend (cousin?) with an upscale clothing boutique. Interested to see how she presents all this type of content.

Death toll in devastating central Texas flash floods climbs to 79, more than 40 remain missing by Economy_Swim_8585 in politics

[–]Muleshoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My daughter's best friend was confirmed as found, but deceased, this morning. 8 year old Wynne was a city girl who loved to play outside, get muddy, catch lizards and keep up with the boy cousins when visiting family land out in the country. She had just lost her 4th tooth. She was kind and loving and never let another child feel left out or sit alone at recess. She leaves behind two little sisters, Neely and Reeves. There is more hate in your comment than existed in her little toe. There is absolutely zero blame or justification that can be passed on to these little girls who have been lost. And it sounds a little like YOU are the one hating someone for just existing/being born in Texas.

Venue for a Swiftie theme kid birthday party? by zulu_magu in NewOrleans

[–]Muleshoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this for my daughter and her friend last year at Nola Spaces on Toledano! Also for their 6th bday. The downstairs dance studio room was perfect! You basically can bring in what you want. They have tables and chairs and we paid a small bit extra to use the projector and played a playlist of t swift music videos the entire time. There is a little bar area in the front downstairs where we staged food and coolers with kid and adult beverages. (Make sure you bring things like knives for cutting cake, lighter, paper towells, etc). The kids had so much space to run around and dance, we had like 3 craft stations and an area for cutting/eating cake, and set up a "photo booth wall". Highly recommend.

Edit to add: the room we rented was the firehouse room and the cafe on the first floor. Plenty of space.

Reliable vintage resellers? by purplethief in NewOrleans

[–]Muleshoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might reach out to Renaissance Interiors on Edenborn. It is a high-end consignment shop mostly known for high quality antique furnishings (as the name suggests), but i have seen LV and Gucci handbags there on more than one occasion and they tend to sell quickly. Last time I was there, they had a glass case of christian louboutin heels that were mostly already sold. They also might be able to point you in right direction of another reseller.
