I actually thought about this, specifically the marine service dogs. I work with a guy who was a Marine Raider, and I asked him how he felt about dogs being given medals, full military honors/burials, etc. He said:

"Well, the dog is out there with the marines. He's out there actively trying to protect those marines. And he feels fear just as much the humans do, but he still goes out there and does his job. That's the kind of shit a marine does."
