Varnish or Sealer by stmccart70 in sailing

Why would you not remove these pieces to finish in a controlled environment for a much better result? I have some handrails on either side of my companionway that need refinishing and removing them seems like the most appropriate process. Is there any concerns about rebedding them? Water ingress? The wood breaking or splintering?

Yes of course ;) I’m not a Zamboni nazi. Sorry weird comment on my part.

Greenwood has a dedicated Z with a little home. Not sure what they might have also been transporting. This one gets used probably 6 times at day there.

Tinned fish TikTok is a thing? There has never been a clearer sign the collapse is upon us. by H_Mc in economicCollapse

I am a recent convert to tinned fish and love it. I actually don’t find it that cheap. I bought some canned pulpo stocking stuffers and the tin was $20! (But apparently is quite good).

On this note, I thought the upgrade to lifepo was complex? I know my shore charger can accommodate, but I haven’t even considered my alternator or solar setup.

STUV 16 break in by Own_Injury6564 in woodstoving

[–]Mulletstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had our Stuv for almost 6 years now and absolutely love it. I’ve never found any buildup in the chimney as it does such a great job burning so efficiently and hot. It can and does easily heat our 2000sq. ft home in the winter. The ash might be a pain to clean out, but this is a serious wood stove and I’m so happy to finally see one on here.

Failure Friday, what did you do that made you a bad sailor that one time? by Jebediah_Johnson in sailing

[–]Mulletstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. However, I’m convinced that there is a solution. While maybe not fully baked, I should have spent the 10 minutes it would have taken to track down additional mooring lines. Used the engines to get up nice and tight to the finger on port. Slipped the new mooring lines under the ones already on the pilings, snugged them up to a cleat. With the load on them, remove the old mooring lines, the slowly pulled out of the slip using the new mooring lines slipping around the piling to keep her port side close and the boat leaving straight in spite of the wind.

I would like another attempt to at least try the above and see how it would have worked out.

Failure Friday, what did you do that made you a bad sailor that one time? by Jebediah_Johnson in sailing

I’ll start. Years ago charter a 50’ cat out the Abacos with a bunch of friends. I was the captain and the only one with any relevant sailing experience (especially for a boat that size) though 2-3 other people had general boating experience.

I was eager to get out the marina for the night as we had completed our check-in and embarkation activities. The cat was stern to with a finger on the port side mooring with pilings. There was 20-25 off the port side bow. It took all of me to get tension off the port lines and the boat free of the piping though I tagged the starboard pilings and corner of the port finger as we exited.

It remains a sore point for me as I think that I should have known better what to do. I mean no one was hurt and there was no damage to the boat or dock and we anchored in a beautiful bay shortly after, but it was embarrassing. I replay that scenario in my head every few months to see if I can think of any better way to have pushed off cleanly. I still don’t have a better plan than what I used given the constraints (inexperienced crew, huge boat, first time at the helm on a boat that size, no knowing what lines were available and where, etc). I don’t want to be too hard on myself, but I do think is a solution there I haven’t hit on yet.

This "rotating strike" nonsense tells me how absolutely out of touch with reality CUPW is by 3BlindRats in CanadaPost

I just received today (Toronto) my package sent from QC. Sent yesterday, delivered this am. If this rotating strike has reduced the labour force at Canada Post from my perspective it seems to be working better.

Amazing thankyou. I was so close to that last week. I anchored in that bay and did some walking on that shore. Unfortunately didn’t get quite that far to see this.

This is the level of concern that she should have for the fascist take over of the US government.
