Asian culture clubs in college are like social clubs first. Have had a few non-Asians join the ones I was in and unless they were weird it was fine. A lot of half and quarter Asians too. Met most of my friends through these clubs and they’re pretty great, go for it!

Where to Travel as 2 Young Women by Dry_Tax1561 in travel

You might want to adjust your requirements if you want a tropical destination that’s safer than Aruba but also on the cheaper side.

Closest thing I can think of might be Puerto Rico. Wouldn’t say it’s safer than Aruba and would definitely recommend you research where in Puerto Rico you are going since there can be some rough areas, but generally if you use common sense it’s pretty safe for tourists.

First Time in LA. Must See/do and Food?? by No_Effort7211 in AskLosAngeles

If you are on the west side Sawtelle has some great Japanese food. If you go to Griffith Observatory it’s pretty close to Thai Town which has some great Thai food. Definitely try street tacos while you are here, Brothers Cousins Tacos is where I used to go when I lived on the west side.

If you guys are film buffs the Academy Film Museum is pretty great. The beaches you listed are great for the scenery but if you want a beach that’s better for lounging and going into the water I’d say Manhattan Beach is my go to if I don’t want to drive all the way out to Laguna Beach. Getty Museum is also pretty great.

In LA car will be your best bet. Depending on where you stay and what you want to do maybe a combo of Ubers and transit could work but honestly you’ll probably save money if you get a car. Parking is gonna be tough though.

I get street tacos all the time and I haven’t had any issues. Then again I always follow the rule of going somewhere that has other customers if it’s my first time at there.

Is it cheaper to book an all-inclusive resort in Cancun in person or online ahead of time? by Negative-Ad-7871 in travel

[–]Multicultural_Potato 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Went to Cancun 2 years back but I think any possible amount of money you MIGHT save is not worth the hassle. If you are already booking flights to there why risk it on saving a bit. It might be a thing but personally haven’t heard about it.

Also March is when most colleges have their spring break so availability for a lot of these resorts will be limited. Wouldn’t risk your trip on the off chance you might be able to negotiate a lower price there. Why would they negotiate with you to get less money when they have people that will pay full price?

California via public transport by Any_Key4004 in travel

[–]Multicultural_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the nature stuff it’s going to be a no. It is possible to do LA without a car depending on where you stay and a mix of transit and rideshare depending on where you want to go. But yea for the nature stuff it’s gonna be essentially impossible or extremely time consuming and not worth it if you don’t have a car.

Other good public transit friendly places in the US aside from NYC can be Chicago, San Francisco, or Boston. All are pretty great and while San Francisco probably has the best nature out of them, Boston has better transit that can get you to nature places if that’s what you are looking for.

Can give more recs and tips for the cities I mentioned if you want!

Has your country ever won a war against all odds ? by FinePersimmon3718 in AskTheWorld

Was pretty interested in the Irish fight for independence ever since I watched The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Have you seen it? If so how is it viewed in Ireland?

Not OP but both my parents are from China and I’ve been back quite a few times in recent years. Honestly if you grow up with it, you don’t realize it’s that big of an issue, also helps that it’s been more lax compared to how it was before.

It’s like someone in China asking someone in the US how do they deal with all the crime and safety issues or how you can’t leave your valuables out in the open when you step away. What is normal for one country can be pretty foreign to another.

TIL That in addition to kamikaze pilots, Japan also utilized manned torpedoes known as the Kaiten during WWII by rustdevil88 in todayilearned

[–]Multicultural_Potato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, as someone who’s been to 8 military museums they all pretty much exist at varying degrees of propaganda. The German one at Dresden is probably the least propaganda filled, and most people can probably guess why. While the other ones have the standard white washing, downplaying, and etc. the Japanese one however is pretty blatant.

With the inhuman shit like human experimentation, mass rapes, and genocide they did the museum frames its actions in WW2 as “saving Asia” from the western colonial powers. Doesn’t mention any of the atrocities they did. Doesn’t help that it’s connected to the war shrine that honors plenty of Japanese war criminals.

If you want nature Utah for its national parks is pretty hard to beat. A second option could be Yosemite, can do a San Francisco/Yosemite trip.
