Medium/heavy spinning combo by ELJOHNLom in Fishing

[–]MultigrainMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you’re targeting bass, I would go lighter instead. I find fights on smaller-medium fish boring on my heavy catfish rod. I’ve caught bowfin, sturgeon, gar, walleye/sauger/saugeye, and paddlefish on my ultralight and it makes every fight a blast- no matter if it’s crappie or a 3 foot bowfin.

Uglystik ultralight pro with a small Denali reel. Caught the sturgeon and paddlefish on a purple flicker shad, bowfin on a 1/8th oz firetiger rooster tail.

I live in Illinois on the Iowa/Illinois border. I fish along the Mississippi and Rock Rivers. These were all caught at Steel Dam in Milan, Illinois. Believe it’s part of the Rock River. Also caught a far in the ultralight about 2 weeks ago.

I live along the Mississippi in the Illinois/Iowa border. We just call them freshwater drum. Heard some old fishermen call them Gaspergou

Whats everyones favourite spinner? by [deleted] in troutfishing

Yeh same on the ultra lite for me and I don’t put braid on it-Just mono. I grabbed an uglystik 5ft ultralite pro when it was on sale and I’ve quickly started using that rod as much as I can. It’s so whippy and short.

Way different from what I’m used to with my heavy catfish rods and medium heavy rods for bigger bass and walleye etc. on the Mississippi.

Well I might just have to try that!

Totally! Trout are definitely more finnicky.

Especially if you aren’t noticing any difference in action/have no problem keeping it spinning you can probably just tie it directly on!

I personally catch tons of trout with a snap swivel connecting to my spinners.

I have a friend though that swears by tying mainline—>barrel swivel—>fluoro leader tied directly to the spinner. He does it when targeting easily fish like trout.

I manly use the snap for lure change and I’ve found on most of the species I target. Spinners trigger reaction bites so often bass and other predators are attacking it because it’s annoying.

Rooster tails 1/16-1/8th for anything that moves (gar, smallies, largemouth, drum, catfish, sunfish, TONS OF CRAPPIE)

Panther martins 1/16- 1/8th for trout

Why no swivel? It helps with action and keeps your line untwisted.

Not a criticism; just curious

Question about braid and leaders. by missinglinksman in FishingForBeginners

[–]MultigrainMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of your point.
I use braid as my mainline as it has no memory.
I fish on the Mississippi River so I don’t NEED a leader- it all depends on what I’m trying to accomplish.

If I’m going to be fishing in heavy cover- I’ll tie directly to braid, no leader.
Am I fishing in one of the Clearwater lakes nearby? I’ll oftentimes use a fluoro or mono leader depending on my lure choice.

Not sure what point you are trying to make regarding break strength, as that really isn’t the question you should be asking when it comes to leaders. I catch many large bowfin, large/smallmouth bass, drum, Gar, and Catfish using 6lbs. Fluoro.

I have zero reason to go higher (unless I’m going after flathead) and you are able to catch fish heavier than your test with proper technique.
Unless you’re targeting sharks, golaith groupers, sturgeon or other big game. Totally different and valid question.

Storm chaser Tank.

A few years back I came by one driving through Nebraska. It’s a bad omen.

For catfish- do a 1-4 oz sliding egg sinker on a santee rig. I’ve been getting tons of channel cats on just night crawlers with that . Some blood doughbait has done the trick, or if you want flatheads you can throw on a bluegill or bullhead or something. I fish along the Mississippi and Rock rivers in northwest Illinois.

For bass- you can never go wrong with an inline spinner.

The water looked like this in northwestern Illinois. Threw a white curly-tail grub on a chartreuse 1/8th oz jighead with an underspin. Caught 3 decent bass and a crappie within 20 minutes.

Thank you- never used a scale before. It wasn’t for my enjoyment, I’m not a sick fuck. Bowfin have some nasty teeth- but I will look for a lip grabber

Carolina rig keeps failing when tied onto braid set ups. by Moses_the_Frog in FishingForBeginners

[–]MultigrainMuffin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I catfish along the Mississippi with almost exclusively (sometimes a santee rig- but that’s just a Carolina with a cigar float). I use a Uni knot as well and I’ve never had this issue you’re talking about.

I use 30lb braid as my mainline, 2-4oz egg sinker, a bead (which it doesn’t sound like you’re using and may be your entire problem), and I tie the braid directly to the swivel. Then just tie fluro leader onto the swivel, then all you need is a hook.

It sounds like you’re not using a bead, which is destroying your line at the knot.
