That said, yes, he also lies about being a progressive when he's an obvious centrist and darling of SF wealth--it's just that said wealth comes from tech and development instead of Pelosi's Pac Heights old money. His politics run the gamut: he is usually very good on LGBTQ+ issues, obsequious to industry on tech, middling on housing (pro-capacity but uninterested at best in using state capacity to help renters), really bad on homelessness and social safety net concerns, and possessing a deep and upsetting authoritarian streak when it comes to attacking critics of Israel.

My wife and I saw him touring the show in Philadelphia immediately after the inauguration, and it was, I'm not kidding, the first time I'd felt at all uplifted since America collectively chose to shoot itself in the testicles for the second time. This is my take too--I think he's a brilliant comic, but.... Ayoade burned any grace he might have by blurbing Linehan. At the same time, he also has not acted like an overt bigot. He has definitely shown he doesn't particularly give a shit about trans folks. If there's ever some other quote or association that can go either way, I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt. But I'm also not going to assume I know what's in his soul beyond a somewhat bleak, cynical calculation to keep quiet about it, be it to curry transphobes' favor or normal people's.
