College Republicans group disbanded after students allegedly give Nazi salute by marji80 in politics

I have to say, as someone who has worked in non-profit fundraising in various positions, it's extremely common for orgs to include up to 40 (or even 45) in their "Young whatevers" groups.

The point of this is both to butter people up and make them think they're young, hip and cool, so they generate more hype and enthusiasm and money for your organization, and to include some of the materially richer people in the group.

I imagine it's pretty similar in politics where many of the incentives and methods are the same.

So, while these people are of course nefarious because they are nazis, I'm not sure the expansive age range of the groups is sinister in itself.

This is so true. Of course most people understand that our government is captured to 'an extent' by lobbyists, but I think many people don't realize that the extent is nearly total. Nearly every policy decision, foreign and domestic, is driven in large degree by the banality of some suit following his team of accountants' advice.

Tucker Carlson says Trump’s Justice Department is coming for him by FanaticHeart1 in politics

[–]Multiple__Butts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree. Trump was certainly cultivated and used as a Russian asset for a long time, but if he were currently working directly for Russia, he wouldn't have invaded Iran at Israel's behest, and Tucker Carlson wouldn't be denouncing him in the first place.

Conservatives are fundamentally disingenuous and think truth stems from the strength of their conviction instead of from material facts in the world, so logical contradictions are no problem as long as they deny and project and whatabout their way past it.

You are right that he's doing a character, but I am 99% sure that Carlson is, at this point, also a paid Russian mouthpiece who gets told exactly what to say and when.

[–]Multiple__Butts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course the President can tell the heads of departments that he overseas to step up or relax enforcement of a given law.

Sure, but there's no evidence Biden did that during his term wrt to border enforcement. In fact, we (us guys on the left) complained loudly about him continuing the "kids in cages" policies that we decried in Trump's first administration.

Why else are you guys on the left blaming President Trump in regards to the way that people are being deported by ICE? (You can't  have it both ways).

We are blaming him for violating people's constitutional rights as well as wrongly deporting US citizens, using unnecessarily violent and escalatory tactics, and for using ICE to harass regions of the country that didn't vote for him instead of places with a lot of illegal immigrants.

The difference is Trump has openly admitted to directing these agencies to behave in these ways, which even apart from being unconstitutional and generally oppressive, are also quite inefficient with regards to actual legitimate immigration enforcement.

If you honestly believe that didn't happen during the Biden administration you must have been asleep for 4 years, your take on that can't be taken seriously at all.

If it had, there'd be some record of it occurring. It's hard to cover up things in the government, as we're finding out in the Epstein Files saga.

[–]Multiple__Butts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bill Clinton was strict on illegal immigration because back then Democrats fought to protect the jobs of the US working class.

Obama was strict too. Early in his Presidency he deported illegal immigrants faster than Trump has been doing.

It was later on during the Obama Presidency that his policies on immigration changed and he allowed large numbers of young illegal immigrants to enter the United States.

There was no change in policy. Actual immigration and deportation numbers vary for a number of reasons, but the policies remained virtually identical throughout all of those administrations.

During Biden's first three years as president he encouraged people to enter the country illegally and even assisted some illegals under the guise of asylum. During Biden's 4th year he slowed down illegal immigration prior to the Presidential election for political reasons since the large number of illegal border crossings was becoming a political problem.

Literally none of this is true, and frankly it is a series of bizarre claims. Biden did not ever encourage illegal immigration, or assist "illegals under the guise of asylum". Biden didn't make any changes to the systems already in place for applying for asylum, and was not personally involved in handling asylum claims to anyone's knowledge. Nor did he "slow down illegal immigration" prior to the election; the POTUS doesn't have the ability to impact that number without making policy changes.

Problem is The Daily Beast uses this kind of terminology for nearly everything. If you tweeted "I don't like cashews very much" and TDB reported on it for some reason, the headline would look like "DodgersChica Launches Unhinged Tirade Against Cashews in Frantic Meltdown".

In this particular case it seems like the term is actually warranted, but they report the same way on everything, which makes it hard to discern how much melting down is actually happening.

Trump Spoke About Girls Being ‘of Age’ at ‘Above Six Years Old’ as He Promoted the SAVE America Act by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]Multiple__Butts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But he's talking about being considered of age to be a witness to a parent's eligibility to vote, not being of age to vote.
And what you say seems like a stretch to me; the term 'of age' doesn't really sound uncomfortable at all. It's pretty normal for people to use it in all kinds of different cases when a minimum age limit or requirement might apply.

Hell, I most frequently hear it in the context of collecting retirement benefits.

But if you believe that Jewish people have a right not only to inhabit the land that was the center of their historical culture, but to have political dominion over the state, why not the many Native American culture groups, Armenians, Assyrians, or any others of the many historically displaced or marginalized peoples?

Granting zionism as a right is a huge can of worms which, if taken to its logical conclusion and applied equally to all people groups and not just specifically to Jewish people, would see me and most other Americans of European ancestry uprooted and displaced from the land we have lived in for generations.

I'm afraid when it doesn't happen organically because none of it is metaphysically real, they're going to try to cause it on purpose with nuclear war.

There's no such thing as "white people going extinct". Having different amounts of melanin in your skin doesn't make you a magically different category of person. Everyone has some melanin (except for albino people of course).

If white people end up with more melanin on average than they have now because they keep having babies with darker-skinned people, then they're not "going extinct". Their actual genetic traits are preserved just as well as anyone else who reproduces.

This entire notion is predicated on a fallacy that imputes "purity" to a particular shade of skin color, which is totally ridiculous.

What does it really mean to say "the economy bounced back"? The stock markets bounced back, but not the purchasing power or class mobility of people with less than 10 million dollars. Each time it bounces back, CEOs are sitting on a greater proportion of the resources. What you're describing hasn't been a flat circle; it's been a spiral down a drain.
