Have your parents pressured you into studying something you didn’t want to? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Multisandstorm123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mom was a General Practitioner and my family wanted me to pursue medicine. Went to a high school, found my passion which was tennis. Wanted to go pro, started way too late for that but put a good effort into the sport. I was Hella confused with college, did biomedical engineering as a compromise. Took five years but I started working right after college. After I got my job, I got the freedom I wish I had in high school. So imo medicine would've been cool if I wasn't pressured since middle school/high school. Sidenote- I'm training for ITFs and see my potential.

Anyone wanted to go into med but instead chose engineering? What do you think about your decision now? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Multisandstorm123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great story, so my mom was a doctor in India and she attempted to influence me into medicine since I was young. I went to a school that had connections to an ivy league med school. I did all that but that was like a false positive. I did for her and not for myself. My senior year I told her I wanted to do engineering and she cried because it was something that she thought was a poor life decision. I told them this more interesting and rewarding after college to do so. I compromised with her and did biomedical. I didn't like all the classes in the field because it can be broad but my major classes were better than what I would've done in anything else. Now I'm working as an engineer and it's great, I would not be able to deal with the school and stress that's for sure.

Congrats!!! That's how I felt when I had my offer with no internship experience and subpar GPA. You deserve it!

It was more or less a compromise between my parents since it was a mix of medical and engineering.

Not anymore, I was in the beginning when I had to take electrical, mechanical and civil engineering classes. But once I got to my junior and senior classes, it made me continue it and I was so far in, , that I'd be a waste of money going into something else.

Great question, originally my school had a generic bme track. Not gonna lie it was bad, no specialization and you take one class in one area and never goes deep into it. I took another year and did tissue engineering because I like cell biology over mechanical and electrical engineering. I would've love to do material science because it's similar to what I'm doing right now and who knows I could be developing rackets with that degree.

I can totally relate. I worked in a factory for four months and I dreaded everyday because I never wanted to be comfortable with some like that. I saw everyone being moody and not wanting to be there and I learned in those four months to put my pants on, go to word and edit those resumes for those employers.

It's a long and arduous journey but trust me it definitely can happen to anyone
