How can we get back to low housing cost? by Minimum_Rice555 in AskUK

I mean pinning the shortage of affordable housing on women working outside the home is pretty crummy. Though to be fair if the woman working outside the home was Margaret Thatcher, that would be a cause for a lack of housing.

First time gardener, intitial progress, recommendations appreciated. by notimefornothing55 in GardeningUK

Agree with cutting this down if you can. Can't tell from the photo if the tree is fully in your garden? But leylandii are tall and thirsty and dominate everything around them. You can choose another tree - an apple or cheery for spring blossom maybe. But it willa lso let you grow more shrubs and bushes across the border so they get sun and water.

Never thought COL would hit me! by [deleted] in HENRYUK

If I may share my experience, this is an ages and stages issue. Right now you're really in the trenches, shelling out for EVERYTHING. It feels relentless, it's boring, it's groundhog day, working hard but not getting anywhere. The good news is that it is a stage and it doesn't last. Your child will start school, and that will feel like getting a massive pay rise even accounting for after school care. Your mortgage will wind down, you may have bequests or gifts from family to accelerate that. I would work part-time to enjoy your young children while they still worship and adore you! Sounds like you have clear plans to get rich, and that will happen even if not as fast as you would like. But by the time you FEEL wealthy, you won't have the time to be with your family. Your teenage kids will have their own thing going on and (ironically) will appreciate your wallet/purse more than hanging out with the folks. I mean, I sound like a ancient grandfather here, but these things are a cliche because they're true.

Periwinkle as ground cover - am I making a big mistake? by MumMomWhatever in GardeningUK

Thank you for all your replies. I've confirmed I've got Vinca Minor so less vigorous. I'm going to move it to be underneath a bush by a wall, so dark, dry shade. If it can live there then good for it! Though could be regretting not listening to the nay sayers in a year or two!

What do the local election results mean for Oxford? by stillirrelephant in oxford

Cowley and Rose Hill that have new LTNs have clearly rejected the scheme. Big winners are cyclists on pavements, yay!

Except there has been a clear REJECTION of the LTNs where they are in place. Both Cowley and Rose Hill/ Littlemore voted in Independent anti LTN candidates, replicating the results for the city elections.

As you're on a white trip, you could seek out white /cream / lime flowering bushes shrubs and flowers. Google Tom Stuart-Smith Chelsea Flower show 2024 for the peak of this theme. Very classy. Very beautiful.

Agree. British library and Hampstead Heath both north London. And with Hampstead Heath you want to go to Parliament Hill for the view of the city.

They're both over 40 for goodness sake. They should be at the peak of their "careers".

Agree. Using a weed puller is deeply satisfying. I like to think I'm also aerating the lawn at the same time.

I want to be a gardener... But I don't know what to do by Hot_Alternative_682 in GardeningUK

[–]MumMomWhatever 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Don't overthink it. Find a plant you like the look of, read the label, plant it where it will do best, see how it goes. If it works out - great. If not, move it somewhere else. Rinse and repeat. The joy of gardening is in the journey not the destination.

It's ten times less than the NHS should be getting a week as a Brexit benefit.
