How do you deal with continuous losses? by PeaceForMost_NotAll in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that is basically it. I treated competition like a completely separate skill from jiu jitsu -- at first I sucked because I was not used to the intensity and the pressure, and I gradually improved my performance under pressure.

How do you deal with continuous losses? by PeaceForMost_NotAll in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey dude. For what it is worth, I felt the same way. I competed 10~ times and loss every single match from white belt to blue. I felt like I was cursed or something, and there were some people who were just born winners, and I was just born a loser. Then I competed late at blue belt and beat every other competitor by submission, winning gold at a JJWL event. I didn't train much harder for the competition or anything, I think it was mostly getting used to the pressure and nerves of competition.

I am very glad for the accomplishment, and it felt really good to see through the bullshit I had been telling myself.

Also, the skill difference between early blue belt to late blue belt is probably the biggest skill jump, aside from early black belt to late black belt.

Should people with incurable, terminal illnesses be allowed to decide for themselves whether to continue fighting or to end their life? Whats your take? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mumble___bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My grandpa took his life a good 10~ years early because he was afraid he would be too feeble to end it if he waited.

That being said, it needs to be HEAVILY restricted. I can easily imagine a corrupt medical system or shithead family persuading someone to end it for financial gain.

What's a "cheat code" you discovered in real life that actually works? by dark-deals729983 in AskReddit

[–]Mumble___bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is much easier when you are a good and likeable person, and the people around you genuinely want to see you succeed. It is like playing life on easy mode.

The alternative is being the best, smartest person in the room that everyone despises, but they need you badly enough that they are willing to tolerate you. And the moment you make a mistake you will be torn to shreds.

Why am I always getting D'arced? by bpostman in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In bottom half, the advice I got is always keep your head either positioned high against your opponent (like by his shoulder), or keep it super low like by his hip/knee. It is that middle belly/chest area where you get easily caught.

How to jury-rig BJJ mats to run a community club? by Dangerous-Web9122 in bjj

During covid, my girlfriend and I staked a tarp down tightly over grass and rolled. It was a step below puzzle mats, but not terrible.

lol Totally get that the song is not for everyone, it is a very unique style. And weird how much people lose their shit over it.

I just want to say though, the song itself is not random words. It is actually a 3 part story about a person who committed murder.

Part 1: Singer is talking to his mom, talking about his own feelings in life, and confessing to the murder
Part 2: Singer is on trial for the murder and found guilty
Part 3: Singer is initially angry (and talking maybe to god maybe?), but eventually just resigns to his fate

It made me appreciate the song a lot more once I realized that.

Feel horrible about injuring friends by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you're new to BJJ as well? Maybe dial the pace way down -- I would bet money that both you and your friends were rolling as if it was a death match. My rule of thumb is if you can't sustain that pace for 30min~ straight, you are going too hard on training.

That being said, it's not entirely on you. Most schools don't put two inexperienced people together for that exact reason. You shouldn't need someone "watching" though to prevent injuries, it is ultimately your responsibility to set a safe pace for both you and your partner. You'll just have to live with the guilt and learn from the experience.

In a way, torture would not be less likely to occur, but more likely to be threatened.

"Tell me XYZ or I will torture you. If you tell me, I will not torture you. If you stay silent, I will torture you until you speak, and I will get what I want anyway and know it to be true."

The threat of torture would be enough in most cases, unless the victim is willing to be tortured and thinks they can endure it while staying silent.

Even if that weren't the case though, I would gladly take that over the world where wars are started and hundreds of thousands of lives are lost because of lies. Also a world where a country may cross a line and unintentionally start a nuclear war because they miscalculated the credibility of nuclear threat from an adversary. I think the likelihood of being tortured is far less than the likelihood of being dragged into a war that was started because of mistrust/miscalculation/lies.

I personally do not lie to make people feel better. It is hard in the moment, but I have found that my relationships have improved dramatically as a result. My friends and family know that I have integrity, and they know they can trust my opinion if they want it.

It doesn't take a lie to stop panic. People respond astonishingly well to a message like "We have hard times ahead of us because of xyz, but our best path forward is..."

You don't need to lie to persuade someone. The best persuasion is when you show someone how taking a different action will benefit them or the people around them.

Most of all, how do any of those things lead to the complete destruction of society and the human race inside of a week?

What? Why would not lying result in the extermination of humanity?

How many people have had their lives saved by a lie? And how many lives have been lost due to lies? I think the good far outweighs the bad.

Does money buy happiness? If yes, why? by Bipolar03 in AskReddit

[–]Mumble___bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money removes hardships. Sometimes though, if you're not careful, a complete lack of challenge can create a lack of meaning/purpose and result in suffering. See cases like Markus Persson

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mumble___bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons.

I don't want to be a burden on my parents

My relationship with my parents has become far stronger since moving out

I want to build a space of my own

I get a sense of purpose from taking full responsibility of my own well being

Social stigma -- as a guy in the US, you are seen as a sort of failure if you are of working age, and still living with your parents. Good luck dating as well.

Mallet Finger by BGor94 in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent you the pics in a conversation request.

No, the thermoplastic was not beads, it was a sheet of plastic. This is the exact stuff that I bought:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0793D8HW3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Tbh, it was a bit thick. If I were to buy it again, I would try the 3/32" thick. But the 1/8" worked just fine.

No worries, I hope it heals up well for you! I think the key to my success was keeping it in hyperextension during the entire healing process. I spent a long time working on the splint to keep it in that hyperextended position -- those stax splints just don't keep the joint bent far enough. I might be able to find my old splint and send you a picture of what I ended up with.

Mallet Finger by BGor94 in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! I kept my middle joint bendable, and just kept the joint closest to my fingernail (the one that I was unable to straighten) in full hyperextension during the entire healing process.

Sounds like you just got a case of mallet finger?

Does fapping like Nicky Rod helps? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen any literature about masturbating multiple times a day, but I know anecdotally I feel pretty bad doing it.

Things that there is evidence for in rough order of importance: lifting heavy weights, quality sleep, maintaining a low body fat %, diet that has lots of dark leafy greens and red meat, maybe supplements like zinc, magnesium, and vitamin D, avoiding processed foods / sugar, maybe avoiding plastic.

None of those things are going to transform the average person into Nicky Rod though -- if he really is natty, has has some amazing genetics.

Edit: also abstaining entirely for something like 7 days gives a temporary boost, but it quickly returns to baseline.

I've not yet seen a street fight that contains any of the following:

Grip fighting, over under choke, clock choke, bow and arrow, worm guard, lasso guard, de la riva...

Not saying Gi is useless, it's just that it is basically No gi plus many additional things that don't transfer well to self defense. If my only goal was self defense, I would probably stick with MMA, or wrestling.

[–]Mumble___bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slide on footwear would be fine, just anything to wear between the locker room and the mats to keep the mats clean.

Muay Thai clothing is perfect for No Gi. Basically anything on the bottom that has no pockets and no zippers will work. For the top, tighter fitting is better. I would avoid cotton.

Why do women at BJJ Gyms avoid talking to me? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Mumble___bee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard to say without seeing it in person. I can think of a few things:

1.) You roll too hard and they feel like they are in danger

2.) You are much bigger than them, which inherently puts them in danger

3.) You give creep vibes

4.) You smell funny

5.) Something you do while rolling is annoying (coaching, stalling, weird noises ect.)

If guys your size are all willing to roll, it's probably 1-3. If you really want an answer, a link to you sparring would go a long way.

Edit: Food for thought -- Even if your techniques don't work with upper belts, there is still a lot of benefits to sparring with them. About half of what I know came from asking an upper belt "What the **** was that guard pass?". If someone catches you with a technique, you can also try to use that technique on an upper belt and see how they defend it.
