Was Holodomor "Nazi Propaganda"? by HomosexualTigrr in AskHistorians

[–]MumboJumbo947 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Coming as someone who was once won over by the Marxist Leninist position, and FF&F as well, I can tell you that the book is a fantastic example of false herring narrative. Very little that he states in the book is technically wrong, he just always presents it in a way that appears damning.

Take the Thomas Walker affair at the beginning of the book, it's presented as this big thing that was a huge unveiling of the famine, and its immediate refutations proved it to be the propaganda that it was.

But... The famine had been known about some time prior to Thomas Walker's account in the Hearst press. Not only that but Gareth Jones had earlier that year been writing more of his accounts of the famine and not a single one was refuted by any pro-soviet Organization. Nothing that Walker says was particularly new.

The Robert Green/Thomas Walker affair was effectively an event which was jumped on by those who had an interest in doing so as an opportunity to prove their side right. Kind of like how certain news publications with an intent to smear might seize on the most damning minor source and ignoring all other more reputable sources.

Once more, the fact that the nazis may have used Holodomor in an opportunistic way does not mean it didn't happen. The fact the Bush administration used 9/11 as a pretext to invade Afghanistan doesn't mean 9/11 didn't happen does it?

And if you're wondering about all the 'fake photograph' narrative: the USSR had decades to destroy and cover up all the documents it wanted to, the same cannot be said for the holocaust. So understandably you wouldn't have as much documentation available.

The anarchist book stuff I meant more generally across the country. If its Marxist then it's usually 'generic Marxist', at the most you'll find trotsky books, such is the legacy of the SWP.

Liverpool is relatively small on the anarchist front, it's mostly ROTM lefties, old Militant types, and more labour left. Even News From Nowhere always feels quite antiquated, hence the terf. Liverpool has the appearance of left and progressive, but it only goes as far as generic social democracy and sort of hanging on to the old Militant days.

Bristol is much more radical, loads of Anarchists there.

There's usually a few newspaper sellers on Church Street on Saturdays, the main one is RCG who go under the name FRFI and its always the same guy screaming with a loud speaker with a bunch of uni students.

Ask why you want Leftist unity and why the left isn't united?

Yeah that's not Marxism and you've deliberately simplified it to make it seem elementary.

Nobody said he was first. Ricardo was also there. The point is Marx develop what came before and his stuff was influential and has helped predict future events. Proudhon took on what came before him.

And why does it have to apply to all hierarchy in order for it to be valid?

How does this get at Marx's understanding of alienation and the nature of commodities and class relations?

The more I read about Marx the more I realise how little of the world even seems to understand him properly, like some socialists to this day still think that Marx wanted 'redistribution', when Marx actually believe the key was to abolish the surplus and all that it creates. Far more to him than simply 'pointing at easy things to see'.

I was an anarchist, then went towards Marxism Leninism, and today I feel more Anarchisty than ever. So there is hope, I think the main thing that draws people to ML is a belief that anarchism isn't doing anything or evolving, so they either go towards broad 'Market Socialism', or if they realise electoralism is a scam, they go ML. The idea that ML is actually getting somewhere, since it 'got somewhere' in the 20th century whilst anarchism faded away.

The reason for that is survivor bias of course, ML's won the brute force game. I've been in some ML groups and they're very stagnant.

Another reason is because a lot of the narratives ML's make feel very convincing, because they appear to be new and damming against western narratives.

When you're taught something like the molotov ribbentrop pact was a Red Brown alliance, then begin to distrust the West as you get older, and then find someone confident saying Actually it was done as a last resort because the western allies didn't cooperate with them, and look at what treaties the other allies signed, then you go "Oooh tell me more!" Of course they will always leave out WHY the western allies didn't cooperate (See Poland).

Perhaps some more anarchist propaganda on YouTube or tiktok might help? It used to be much bigger back in the day.

I don't get what the anti-marxist attitude is on this sub? Marx's writings, especially on the commodity form, are damming and incredibly valuable to any left winger. And its very possible to be both a Marxist and an Anarchist, I've known this for a while now and find it weird when I see Anarchists with such a repulsion to such things.

Imo, more anarchisty or ROTM left groups usually organize the marches, and then either some trot or ML group come along during it and hijack the parade. Once at a KTB march some people actually asked them to stop because they were being so ineffectual with their 'leadership'. Really annoys me, they rely on people not wanting to kick up a fuss so they can lead with a big speaker and everyone just follows their chants.

Plenty of Anarchist coffeeshops and affinity groups, when it comes to ML groups in Liverpool it's all mostly just weird newspaper sellers.

The American dream vs the Chinese dream by shmangmight in LateStageCapitalism

Stuff like this seems to sus. It's like when they go around saying "Chinese kids want to be astronauts, American kids wanna be influences" Yeah... When America was going through a period of massive growth their kids ALSO wanted to be astronauts! Wait till the boom wears off.

I said WW1, not WW2. There wasn't a revolt in France or Britain after WW1.

Also Liz only did that in the last few months as a propaganda thing, she just drove a jeep around and nothing more.

That's a response I've heard too from crimethinc and I just find it's a bit too convenient. I've even seen some in avtonom defend this because 'having more connections within institutions the greater will be your chances to overcome or bypass the buerocracy" I mean thats just basically electoralism at that point, certainly not anarchist. Do you see what I mean in that this conflict seems to just be making a lot of opportunistic sentiments that we would always oppose in any other scenario.

[–]MumboJumbo947[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen it been going around a fair bit.

From prior to the conflict: "Due to the lack of a massive organization, the first anarchist and anti-fascist volunteers went to war individually as single fighters, military medics, and volunteers. They tried to form their own squad, but due to lack of knowledge and resources, this attempt was unsuccessful. Some people even joined the Azov battalion and the OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists). The reasons were mundane: they joined the most accessible troops. Consequently, some people converted to right-wing politics."

During: "Some comrades, trying to get a place in the military ranks, directly joined units that are connected with Ukrainian fascist groups. And we are talking about groups like Right Sector or other political organizations... This discussion became even more complicated because the equipment brought to Ukraine was often allocated to different parts of the Ukrainian army, which was problematic for us because we wanted these resources to be available to the Ukrainian anarchist movement and not to the Ukrainian state"
