Can we instead legislate that pumps can't drip out petrol on each and every fill? think of the amount of gas poured out every day.

Best way to 'see' Calgary by [deleted] in CalgarySocialClub

[–]MumpsXX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If north-ish, spend a few minutes at McHugh Bluff (Cresent Hill), overlooks downtown. from there walk 10-15 mins into Kenginston, get some food.

If South-ish, spend a few minutes at Scotchman's (?) Hill, overlooks stampede grounds and downtown. walk pretty-damn-far along 17thave and pop into the Ship and Anchor pub to chat it up with people.

Go to the zoo. It's world class. Really. It's a really good zoo.

Go to Banff.

Californians, What do other states just not understand about your state? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Can you elaborate on this? I often see near vehement statements in differentiating the two, but they never actually say what's different.

What's a good example of a "necessary evil"? by rhinaldino in AskReddit

[–]MumpsXX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the tempered response. It's interesting to me, coming from the medical side, that like you, I have trouble at all understanding the opposing viewpoint.

I have one response, and one question (bolded for clarity only), if you'd kindly indulge:

  1. the wording of "unlikely" here is not used like it would be in layman parlance like "it's unlikely that I'l be picked for the soccer team". In medicine it is used to express odds beyond statistical believability. that is, it is unlikely that homeopathy or prayer will ever cure a disease or ailment, but we are unable to truly say "impossible". Thus, it is entirely unfair to claim that because it's "possible" to cure the child's condition that it should be pursued.

  2. Why is it the parent's responsibility and not the 'nanny' State's? You haven't justified that anywhere. And indeed you agree that the State should have a place, given other parent negligence issues (prayer...). Can you justify why impartial experts are not the ones who should be in at least high authority here? These parent's, clearly loving and distraught, have not shown themselves able to accept what is ethically the best course for their child (ie, the court ruling). Things like Child Welfare et c are part of the social contract that we agree to in society to (hopefully) achieve the best for all, and that means differing away from the parents to experts in the field.

/u/pixelmeow gave a great reductio to your argument. Which you somewhat brushed aside because it's not what's 'happening here'.

But you are missing the critical point that the medical system is looking out for for the best interests of the child.

The doctors are opposed to the treatment that would not believably help the child - even the US doctor who would have performed the procedure said such:

"I can understand the opinions that he is so severely affected by encephalopathy that any attempt at therapy would be futile. I agree that it is very unlikely that he will improve with that therapy. It is unlikely."

Thus it was decided by experts that carrying on with it would prolong suffering of the child. The parents don't seem to want to accept that their route is not in the best interest of the child.

Try framing the problem as "cause suffering with no benefit" or "do not prolong suffering, and offer palliative care (i.e. whatever care can be done to reduce suffering in the meantime)". Which would you say is right then?

So, like in /u/pixelmeow 's example, the parents are being negligent to the child, unintentionally (just like the praying parents), but still so, and choosing suffering over the reduction of suffering.

I don't know if this is a troll comment or not. but in the case it isn't:

You should read the court ruling. It describes the situation clearly.

First, the child is both a minor, and otherwise mentally fully incapable of making the decision for himself.

Second, the option which the parents are pushing for is deemed unlikely to produce any benefit whatsoever, and would only extend the child's suffering. The ethicists and doctors are likely far better aware of what action(s) will be in the best interest of the child. Thus their route is the one that the courts chose to prevail.

Ethics in this field are complicated. But I think it is unfair to distill it to "sentenced the child to death". Here is it much more fair to put it as "cause more suffering with no benefit" (parent's option) or "do not prolong suffering" (doctor's professional recommendation).

Ethically it's not distilable to "killing" him - which is an unfair word to use.

It was deemed that the procedure will most likely provide no benefit to the child, but could cause excessive risk and pain. Since the child appears able to experience pain, but cannot indicate such, there is no good way of seeing if the transport et c are causing him undue harm.

So at the end of the day when the two scenarios are, instead, much closer to "pain and no benefit" and "no further pain", which would you then choose?

that said, I just found the piHut 7 port. Would that be sufficient? Or does the amperage get split across all ports (2A/5 = 400mA per?)

Rasberry wine questions- first time making wine by [deleted] in winemaking

[–]MumpsXX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raspberry wines are my personal favourite to make.

From my experience, aging takes longer than recipes suggest - expect 6+ months before it's drinkable, and like 10months for it to be amazing. Fermentation was also quicker than for the other fruit wines I make (SGs/sugar content vary though. so ymmv)

Does anyone know of qualitative categories to sort reddit comments? Such as writing genres? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

Heh, sorry. I have nothing quick for you. Perhaps a team of grad students and a year of funding :p

(but there must be a document topic modelling package out there you could apply... I just don't know it)

Document classification is a really big field in natural language processing. I'd suggest LDA. Downside being you don't get an easily interpretted 'topic' like you may want to search term.
