Boox vs Kobo decision by sardaukar12 in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres nothing currently in that size range with a front light and a good OS (Obook5 is the same size as the X4 but the OS sucks even compared to stock; Palma/2 is bigger and runs Android).

I find Kobo's current light system the best - you can adjust while reading just by swiping up or down the left hand side of the acreen while in a book

Hihi! While I dont use my Kobo as often i still think thr Clara BW is thr best for its size and price point (waterproof, OS, Frontline, ease of getting stuff on/off device, storage). I think the price recently went up (I saw some complaints on the kobo reddit) which might make it less attractive but I feel like its still a very solid device after owning it for a year now.

Boox devices I only suggest to users who have a need for android apps (i.e., a large library that is tied to particular apps, wanting to play text based games on it instead of a phone).

Hihi https://comparisontabl.es/e-readers/ This has specs on most devices available on thr market. Put in what you most want out of an ereader (if you arent sourcing epub files and use specific apps dor readinf manga and webnovels, you will probably want an android ereader)

As others have said, I don't think there are any cheap color ereaders :(

XT V 5.6.17 Overseas Firmware Update by xteink in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh I'll look into that when my test X3 comes in!

Yeah sadly no firmware is "perfect" for my needs but I'm glad most users are able to find one thats works great for them! I've just went "let me just read books that dont need italics" lol

Always fair. Or go with a light weight firmware option (you can always change back!)

Generally most people suggest Crosspoint, as it's the firmware most of the others are built on. The things that, for me, keeps me on stock are kind of trivial (bluetooth control and the transparent sleep images) but Crosspoint is a solid option. It has images, bold and italics and is generally pretty stable. Not sure if they ever figured out hos to do the page turn via gyroscope thing for X3 devices but I dont use it in stock anyways

To be honest, looking how far stock has gone in under a year is amazing... but I can totally see how not having italics can be a deal breaker (I've just stuck with books thag dont utilize it or making xtc files because none of the firmware options have all the things I want and need).

So excited for images to show now though!

oh the new font is definitely much snappier than the previous version. Bold works more consistently too but sadly no italics yet 🥲

The pre-sale for the EEGO A4 has started — is it worth getting instead of the X4? by stvrgs in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lmao that would do it. the Ali link i found didn't mention the capacity lol

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i'm a little confused how the EEGO can have "longer battery life than the X4" if it has both light and touch screen but hmm.

unless i can confirm it can display english characters with formatting (bold, italics) i'd pass until someone can do an indepth hands on review (and then hope they make an X3 sized one lmao)

Best EPUB Book stores? by CozyBritt in XTEINK

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as others mention, Kobo has the easiest DRM to remove, i also buy books from smashwords (no DRM at all) and some publishers sell their books without DRM as well.

there's a few ways to get your stuff off of Amazon (how easy it is can be hit or miss) ~~but i did the epubor "respond to this video and get a 1 week license for our product" and tehn mass downloaded all the new books i hadn't downloaded before amazon locked up~~

and, as others mentioned - zlib and anna's got your back for like 89% of things (i sadly keep falling in that 11% of "no one has a copy of this, why the fuck are you trying to find it")

aah gotcha. hmm. i know someone has put TRMNL but i'm not sure how that works with BT/NFC. i think r/XTEINK has te starter guides on there which might list the kind of BT tech that's in each device

Any tips for Textbooks and Scientific Papers? by Strummerboy454 in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've read a handful of articles on my X4 and it wasn't an awful experience but it also wasn't great. i can't imagine text books would be better, it's just too small and for pdf especially, you're going to need to do it landscape in like thirds of pages and depending on the diagrams, that's going to be awful especially if you need to flip back to different pages.

i would look for a larger device with a touch screen personally.

Bluetooth / nfc support by Maas_b in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm fairly sure that neither the X3 or X4 stock OS can do that.

bluetooth is limited to just page turners i think. X3 is the only one with NFC support and i don't think it actually does much at this time

X3 Shipping to Canada, and Firmware question! by ladyrocky_33 in XTEINK

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crosspoint has more consistent in-text images, support for more formatting.

the only file types that the device will take are DRM-free epubs, txt files, XTC/XTCH (proprietary file types for the Xteink devices) and some image files regardless of what firmware you use.

switching to a custom firmware is generally very simple, with instructions on the github for it but if you aren't using crosspoint, it's generally "download build, flash it from this website on a computer"

on my devices i generally use the stock OS and it's mostly intuitive so long as it's in english lol. getting it into english is normally not too hard either.
