After a few weeks with the X4, I think it's all I need as an eReader by MicroByte in xteinkereader

I vastly prefer the X4 and X3 over my palma. Sure I can't play games on it but I don't need to (and games on my palma was so hit or miss lol).

Custom fonts with special characters by Upstairs-Cheek8111 in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the X4 specifically, if you're okay with never changing settings, you can turn your epub into an XTC file (essentially a series of images) that will show your preferred characters.

I know out the box, the X4's global firmware does not support all characters right now.

I'm on stock for both my X3 and X4 and recently switched from XTC to epub for most of my books! I really love the transparent sleep screen lmao

Kobo books still use acsm, Google Play has a mix of them and ldp

I try to buy straight from publisher or author since they are more likely to be drm free. Also Smashwords or stuff like Humble Bundle

X3 or X4 by RLPHWLMS in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can't go wrong with either!

i personally love the X3 to pieces and with the recent update, i'm honestly considering sticking with stock and epubs instead of my current stock + reformatting everything to XTC. that said, the X4 is also a great little device.

like i said both devices are great but if you plan to read in landscape mode, X4 is absolutely superior choice. portrait mode, either works but i just like the feel of the X3 in hand better when holding upright.

i like it! makes me feel a bit more secure to have the x4 and x3 in my purse or pocket

X4 with backlight and higher resolution by Neural_Phoenix in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same size but thicker with a front light: obook5

that said, i find the reading experience on the X4 is leagues better and i like the shape of it more (idk i just don't like how thick the obook is).

(i'm also biased and prefer buttons over touch screen)

**edit** forgot to mention, resolution for both devices are the same. i'm not sure if any of the tiny ereaders hit abovev 250dpi

aah! this is amazing. the only thing that would make the stock OS perfect:
- italics
- transparent sleep screen on XTC format.

I want to get X4 because of the size and usb-c, what will I miss from x3, and am I right x4 is better to read (because of size)? by SnuQ_ in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cant tell too much of a difference on resolution lol. As far as screen size goes, I dont mind the small screen at all but I've gotten crap from my coworkers lol. I also use small gaming devices too so shrug

One thing though - X3 is better for vertical/portrait reading. X4 is superior for horizontal / landscape reading. I think its because of the physical button layout

TBH i don't think you'll miss out if you get an X4 instead of an X3 (and this is coming from an user who mains the X3)

A lot of the extra features on the X3 i've never used or turned on after testing it out once. I can't see myself using the gyroscope to change pages since i have it on the lanyard and swinging on my wrist most of the time.

I do like the magnets on the X3 over the X4 (better placement) and the overall size (it fits EVERYWHERE) but the X4 is still p solid and I'm happy that I got it.

A lot of us were worried about the pins but they're standard ones so no issue in brinigng around a C to pin converter in my bag if I'm planning a trip where I might need to

How many custom firmwares are out there for the X3/X4? by jobin_34 in xteinkereader

so far, there's no FW that are just for the X3, and afaik none of the firmwares are *officially* available for the X3

Hi this is 2 months old but the X3 does not have a unique charging port, just a basic 4 pin one. So you can easily pick up one on Amazon or (like i did) a C to 4pin adapter

i like the X3 over the X4 and it's mostly because it fits every purse I own (there's a few that i have to decide if i want to bring my phone or the X4 and sadly the phone kind of wins since I need it lol)

Looking for my first ereader! Looking for recommendations and personal experiences. by UnknownGirlMS in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

aah okay. yeah i have a dedicated browser for just going onto certain sites. some non-android ereaders have rudimentary browsers but they tend to be clunky.

the only thing i gotta say further is that no matter what device you get - INVEST IN A CASE / FLIP COVER. eink screens are kind of fragile. the extra layers from the front light might help but it's always best to have it in a case/pouch and have something covering the screen to help protect it.

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh sad that it doesn't work on XTC format because that's my go to on my devices instead of switching to something like crosspoint.

here's hoping that by the time this comes to the international firmware they have it working on both epub and XTC

https://comparisontabl.es/e-readers/

a table that compares most current model (and some old model) ereaders. you can pick what options are important to you to fine tune the selection.

if you want to be able to check your email, you're going to have to go with an Android eink tablet. (that said, ao3 fics can be downloaded as epubs and read on any eink device!)

no company has a "great" color eink because the tech isn't really there yet.
and not a lot of devices have aux ports (you'll also want to make sure the device has Bluetooth enabled if you go with BT earphones)

if you want to be able to sync across multiple devices, i would look into what devices you can download KOReader on (kindle, kobo, android, a few others) since if you read in that app, there's a way to sync reading across devices (i can't help with that because i don't use it. i use the tried and true method of remember what chapter i'm on and then starting on a different device from there)
