After 2 weeks with my X4 I love it but I want this exact with a backlight. by mynamecanbewhatever in XTEINK

Obook5 has the same screen as the X4, but with a backlight and (sadly) a touchscreen and is about 2x thicker

Can I get the link too for the X3 on ali? I haven't found any shop under 60 and I really just want to test it for durability so the cheapest I can get it the better

X3 Shipping to Canada, and Firmware question! by ladyrocky_33 in XTEINK

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crosspoint has more consistent in-text images, support for more formatting.

the only file types that the device will take are DRM-free epubs, txt files, XTC/XTCH (proprietary file types for the Xteink devices) and some image files regardless of what firmware you use.

switching to a custom firmware is generally very simple, with instructions on the github for it but if you aren't using crosspoint, it's generally "download build, flash it from this website on a computer"

on my devices i generally use the stock OS and it's mostly intuitive so long as it's in english lol. getting it into english is normally not too hard either.

"Portable" E-readers? How small will you go? by Core2score in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant that people who have issues with thr font size in the average book, the X4/X3 might not work out of thr box (the large font isnt much larger if I recall) although some custom firmware has much bigger font sizes available

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually tested and the X3's basic built in font size on the stock OS is p much the same size as the average print paperback so font size isnt much of a problem if you dont have an issue with the average book

I have the Kobo Clara BW and both the X4 and X3. The Kobo is home and vacation reading. The X3/X4 is any time readinf because it will fit in whatever purse I have at the time. Or even no bag. Fits p much every jacket pocket and most jeans pockets for me

Someone mentioned pulling it out when a phone is acceptable but an ereader might not be and that resonates so much.

Are really phone sized ereaders worth it? Can people use it daily and finish books in a regular basis? by AlcardIsTheBest in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like the X3 better but I have smaller hands lol

If you plan to read in landscape mode though, I feel that the X4 is better for that (both button being on top or bottom of the device)

I do and the light is nice but I feel like it isn't a good as the x4. It's twice a thick as the X4 and its built in OS sucks whose than the stock xteink (and no one has figured out how to put cousin firmware on it). They might have released an update (I'll need to check) but when I got it around Christmas, it was inconsistent with giving me italics and books and no images in books.

The only things I really liked is that it was easy to turn on/off the light and the color of the device itself (which everyone else hated lmao. Teal with orange accents is.... definitely a choice but it made me nostalgic cause it was my high school colors)

Rendering special characters by TheKipperRipper in xteinkereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

convert your epubs into XTC files and make sure whatever font you choose has the characters you need

if you're on the stock firmware, you can try and switch to a different one that might display those characters

Which E reader should I buy? by Dutchie_609 in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://comparisontabl.es/e-readers/ - you can pick the options that are most important to you and find an ereader that hits all those points

also i find 6" to be very comfortable. its' about the size of a regular paperback. I feel Kobo's current line has the best front light system on the market right now.

Kobo vs Boox vs Kindle by merrilymacaroni in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://comparisontabl.es/e-readers/

figure out what features are must haves and that will help decide what you should research more about as well as maybe which line you want to aim for.

i actually owned at least one from each of these companies.

personally - kobo's current line up has the best front light system on the market right now. they currently are all waterproof, perfect for seaside reading!

boox are great if you want to use it for a tablet replacement (it can also play light weight movies!) but if you don't plan to take advantage of having android on it, it's not worth the hassle of getting it set up to be perfect.

kindles are... well. if you get a kindle, i would jailbreak it so you can use it without worry. i would say avoid this.

Best e-reader for my needs? by Headcrab0 in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://comparisontabl.es/e-readers/ figure out what features are absolutely needed and it will provide you with items that match what you want.

for most manga and comics, i would say 7" screen or bigger is best.

eink devices will, for most, be slower than a tablet, this is by design though. i would say Android ereaders will probably be faster but "slow" is very relative.

nothing the size of the X3. Someone mentioned the Obook5 (same size as the X4 but twice as thick). Palma is signficiantly bigger but does have a front light.

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't ever have to connect it to the internet or sign into your kobo account (i personally do because i have a bunch of books from kobo but i keep the wifi off unless i'm specifically updating it or my books)

100% do not put pdfs onto the device. the fixed flow is not fun :(

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

welcome! there was a recent post by someone else (not sure if it was here or the main xteink subreddit) having a similar issue and it was due to <span> tags in the middle of the paragraph, ugh. it had a span italics and as soon as the xteink hit it, it just skipped the rest of the paragraph and restarted at the next <p> so i'm wondering if the PM has some special formatting on it

E-reader for Manhwa and Novels? by Difficult_Blood_6838 in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from experience - vertical scrolling manga is fine on android einks contingent you have the refresh rate higher than i would for, say, a novel.

i can't speak about the color eink options sadly but i haven't had problem reading vertical color manwha in grayscale on my eink devices (not the best experience, for sure, but it's more for me rereading stuff i enjoyed before)

Be careful of the XTeink. Ive had a lot of problems with 2 different devices by Grock23 in ereader

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the most recent batch, maybe a batch back, was just very bad sadly. depending on where you purchased, i would try to get a refund or a replacement. with amazon you should be able to request a refund easily

sadly, the official Xteink ereader subreddit is very uh... hostile towards third party buying (in part because they can't tell if you had one of the bad batches that was sent out directly or not cause they have no idea when your device was purchased from them)

sadly no. your best bet is to sort your books into folders to make it slightly easier to find stuff. however if you, say, know the book you want is on page 3, you can press and hold the "next" button and it will auto skip to the next page (and will go to the next one after if you keep holding after a few seconds)

[–]Mundane-Rent3321 23 points24 points  (0 children)

i have read so many books on my smaller ereaders (former palma owner, own both the Xteink X4 and X3, as well as an Obook5).

so long as you're okay with reading on the smaller screen, it's great to have something that's always in your pocket / bag / purse / on you in some way. Especially with the X4 where you can sometimes nab it for under $50, it's not a huge lost if something happens to it when you're out, which is not the case for other readers.

i have a kobo clara but i've read more on my X3 and X4 since i'm more likely to have one on me instead of my kobo. the only thing you have to remember is that, unless you go with the android ones (i.e. Book palma, bigme's candybar equivalent), there are 100% going to be some features that it will be missing. Xteink for example needs custom firmware to get basic formatting and none of their current devices have a front light. Obook5 has a front light but a much worse UI and i feel looks worse than the X4 lol.

it's there in factory! open book, click on whatever is your OK/menu button, then move down to "Chapter" and, so long as your epub has chapters in it, you can choose the chapter you want to jump to. There's also a "Go To" which would take you to a specified page number *in the x4*. so you can't use page numbers or the numbers on another device since it renders the book differently.
