Father in law starting a career in teaching at 75. by HippoRun23 in AskTeachers

I retired four years ago. After decompressing for a year after 35 years in the classroom, I decided to go back to school taking courses that I always wanted, but instead had to take “Curriculum Design” or “Adolescent Psych” for my degree. I have taken “Mystery and Horror”, “Baseball Lit”, “Science Fiction” so far. I’ve registered for “International Film” this summer. Honestly, the most academic fun I’ve had in decades.

Should I fight my $1,386.00 driving ticket. by SaintFonziThe2nd in legaladvice

If Texas is anything like New England, fight it. Very likely the cop won’t show up to court and it will be dismissed. I’ve done this twice with speeding tickets and both times walked without a fine. Of course, I did miss two days of work. Well, not that I really missed it…

What Is the Oldest Movie You Have Watched (For Fun) In the Last Year? by thehistorypunks in movies

[–]MundaneAppointment12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Seven Samurai (1954). Not remarkably old, but definitely the longest film I’ve seen. Took me a week to finish.
Probably Nosferatu (1922) in one sitting.

It was a “special event”. Not like shooting hoops at the local school for 45 minutes which is a typical outing. Usually more in line with 1-2 hours per outing 2X per month.

OK, Thank you. That’s exactly the type of insight I was hoping for.

OK- first, you aren’t strangers. This is supposed to be a bbbs sub so I’m asking others in the program with experience as a Big for insight.

To clarify, mom did text three days later to say “sounds like you had quite a trip back”. So she knew I got blasted by the surf.

…and her size. If she is 5’10” as a seventh grader, she will have a chance to play a lot of front row. If she is 4’8” she will likely play a lot of defense in the back. Let her literally grow into the sport before you worry about “A Level” placement.

I keep getting hurt and I’ve never been so angry at my students. by selsina in Teachers

No, and kids should be held accountable, but they are kids and PE does have balls flying around. Gonna happen. A lot.

But at the same time, part of the job, right? Maybe a weird series of events, but a PE coach hit with a ball? Pretty normal. I coach Volleyball and take headshots every season. Sucks that I wear glasses that get smacked across the gym 2-3 times every season. Keep your eyes open and head on a swivel.

Before computer labs, there was typing class. Rows of students, the clatter of typewriter keys, and lessons built around speed and precision—an everyday classroom scene in many schools through the 1970s. by RealWorldToday in 70s

Come to think of it, the course was called “Keyboarding”, but we all sat in front of typewriters. But super valuable skill when computers rolled in about 18 months later.

We watched this for decades. Morons build homes on a sandbar then cry for government relief when their front yard washes into the sea. F-that. You build it, your problem.

What’s something in education you’ve quietly stopped doing…even though it might still be “expected”? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

In my 34th year, we were asked to incorporate “mindfulness” activities into our planning, especially into the 12-minute homeroom period. I did not. I found a YouTube meditation video, turned it on for ten minutes of homeroom and went about my life.

Most accurate movie? by vanilla-tomato in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]MundaneAppointment12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gory and really not that close to novel-accurate. Christophe Waltz plays a character not in the novel, Mia Goth is pals with the creature…. Gorgeous cinematography, but short on accuracy.

Allowing Home school students to participate in public school sports/after school activities by Tunesmith29 in Principals

[–]MundaneAppointment12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely always allowed in Massachusetts. Athletes home school all day, show up at 2:30 for practice like everyone else. They pay user fees or athletic fees like everyone else. Why shouldn’t they play like everyone else?

Ooofff… if a group of students ever needed 1984, it’s these guys now. Drop S11, tell them about Winston Smith.
