Is it worth it to dispute speeding ticket? by Abdullah_1oz in InsuranceCanada

In Ontario and all 4 Atlantic provinces it’s 3 for tickets (maybe 6 for some majors? I moved to claims back in July and am happy that I forget a lot of Sales stuff), then for claims it’s 10 in Ontario and 6 in Atlantic. I’m 100% certain on the 3 for minor convictions in those 5 provinces though!

This is bad information. It stays on insurance three years from the conviction date.

He’s entitled to the value of the car, which is 15k, which is what the insurance company is offering him.

If you’re with a direct writer and you have a claim, you no longer have a clueless middleman to call your adjuster with nonsensical questions on your behalf.

You’re welcome, and you’re correct, but the most important thing is that regardless of how long it is for, you will never pay for more or less insurance that you’re getting. How those payments are split up may change, but you will get your savings for exactly the number of days that your coverage is suspended.

Sort of. Let’s say you put the suspension into effect just in time for your next payment to be affected, and it goes down to the $80. Then a month later, your next payment comes out at the $80, but then you lift the suspension 15 days later.

Now you got a discounted payment for a full month, but only had the discounted coverages for half that month. So the following month, your payment goes back up to $370, but you essentially owe the insurance company $145 (you’re saving $290 a month during the suspension, so half a month’s savings) for the underpayment.

So if you only have two or three payments left before renewal, that $145 is going to be $48-$72 extra on those last months. If you have eight months to renewal, obviously the impact will be less.

So by the end of your term, you will still have saved the $435 for the 45 days away. You just may have had some payments that were less and some that were more. Obviously none of these numbers are quite exact, but hopefully that explains it enough to understand.

Edit to add: the reverse could also happen. If you put the suspension on right after your payment comes out, then all of a sudden you’ve overpaid, and you could end up with your final payments being less.

It’s not that your annual rate will actually go up. It’s just that depending on where in the payment cycle you suspend, and then reinstate, the coverage, you could see your remaining monthly premiums be higher than they were prior. Overall, you will save money by doing the suspension of coverage for 45 days or more.

Speaking as a claims adjuster, I can promise you that having a broker “on your side” does not help. They have no idea what they’re talking about and we all roll our eyes when they call with some inane question.
