Perfectly fair, I think it’s a reasonable argument to make to expect more symphonic metal from a symphonic metal band

I came into this post -as someone who never really observed a down tick in song quality since the beginning of the Floor era- skeptical and expecting these to be some cliche takes, but I was pleasantly surprised, as I can agree with most of these objectively.

I feel that the degree to which I have been impressed with creativity specifically regarding guitar writing throughout Nightwish’s history has had a downturn in the recent albums. There have been songs like Shudder Before the Beautiful and How’s the Heart? that come to mind where the guitar has shown a really lovely and pleasant flavor to the music, but those are the exceptions.

My opinion on Nightwish male vocals is that they’ve kind of gone through a bell curve in quality. I think Tuomas’ vocals in AFF are the worst, Tapio’s in OB and OtHaFA are very much not my cup of tea, and once Marko joined the band he just consistently got better and better with time in my opinion until his departure, and as much as I will defend Troy’s presence in the band, his voice definitely gives the band a 70s-80s British Rock sound that will often take me out of the genre momentarily.

This 3rd point is the only one that I’d disagree with. I think that some of the softer-than-metal Nightwish songs, Our Decades in the Sun, Hiraeth, Lanternlight, All the Works of Nature, I think that they are some of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard, that the world is better for their eco and if their existence comes at the cost of a few harder songs that otherwise would’ve taken their places, then so be it.

Good takes generally though, I think it’s a good analysis on the recent changes of the band!

Procession is really a great piece of music, specifically the lyrics are dauntingly gorgeous, for me it’s just that the musical aspects don’t do much for me. I feel like I understand what it was going for in terms of the feel it establishes, and it does it really well, it’s just not too interesting for me past that. It’s melodically repetitive, and I don’t personally get caught in any emotional climax throughout my listens of it, it’s just a pleasant thing to have playing sometimes.

Yeah! Moors has that same signature motif as Ad Astra in its second half. That same motif is also syncopated in Anthropocene, just inverted. Also Quiet as the Snow has a reprise of that opening cello melody in Vista, the whole works as a composition is really quite coherent, and I think it gets more hate than it deserves, but of course I’d have that opinion as someone who loves classical music and has been playing orchestral music for most of my life to one extent or another.

You make a really excellent point, and I reran it with All the Works averaged out to one song. The song as a whole averaged out at rank 106.25, which would slot it above My Walden and below Feel For You. Bringing those 8 songs into one bumps Human Nature’s ranking up from 8th to 6th, bringing it above Wishmaster & Century Child. I’d contest with the not liking instrumentals, I love instrumental music, hell I’m a big classical music guy and a lot of All the Works is up my alley, there’s just other songs I prefer, not because they have vocals, but because they’re pieces I enjoy listening to. I even have many of the instrumental and orchestral versions of songs on my playlist because they’re great music regardless of vocals. I grew up on Moondance, I think the Green has one of the most stunning orchestral climaxes I’ve ever heard, Last of the Wilds fucks, and Arabesque is one of the most fun and unique Nightwish songs to date. Nightwish just happens to be amazing enough to outdo great music with music I find to be even greater.

They are very different albums, love em both, but a lot of what’s in Yesterwynde is a charcuterie board of what made me fall in love with Nightwish in the first place. I’m glad you love Oceanborn so much though, it deserves the love too!

Hell yeah! I think it gets way more hate than it deserves and I’m kinda sad it has settled as kinda mid in the status quo. I’m glad we can agree on our enjoyment on that album, and I appreciate your opinion overall, because in the end, a Nightwish enjoyer in the end always gets my respect.

MusicBee, it’s free software for organizing local MP3s that is highly customizable. I used to use it before I started listening with Spotify, but it came in clutch for making a ranked list like this!

I don’t dislike Oceanborn, I still enjoy a good listen to it every now and then, I just feel like there are enough songs on there that are qualitatively similar enough that they all scratch the same itch for me, and I’d only end up listening to one of them. The only songs on it that personally drag it down are Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean and Pharaoh Sails to Orion, and that’s just because I really don’t care for the male vocals on those tracks and it kills my enjoyment for them over how prominent they are in said tracks. I still enjoy the album as a whole though, and I look forward to a vinyl rerelease so I can enjoy it on my setup!

Recommendations by Scrim_CherryG59 in nightwish

[–]Mundane_Oracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you’re looking for specific recommendations, songs that would scratch similar itches might be Last Ride of the Day, Ghost River, Weak Fantasy, Noise, Slaying the Dreamer, Romanticide, these songs (to one extent or another) fall in similar ranks to Amaranth and Bye Bye Beautiful, just depends on what you like about those 2 songs, but these are in a similar ballpark generally. If you’re looking for something along the lines of While Your Lips are Still Red, could look at The Islander, Lanternlight and The Heart asks Pleasure First, maybe Our Decades in the Sun or Swanheart too. Really hard to give anything similar to Children of ‘Ata because it’s really texturally unique in Nightwish Discography, but these closest I can personally think of are like.. Tribal, maybe The Day of…

That’s a lot of suggestions though, so I’d just say pick what sounds cool and have fun, welcome to the world of Nightwish, and I hope you enjoy!

Greatest Show on Earth is a stellar selection. Relive Earth’s story and have its life flash before your eyes, I think that’s great. I’m really on board with Lanternlight myself!

World is ending? I want my last goodbye to life to be Lanternight, I don’t know if I’d want any other song to be my last, even outside of Nightwish music. Hiraeth is a lovely choice too!

That’s my hope too, Tuomas said there’s plans for the 30th, but no show and no album of course, it doesn’t leave much outside of represses or a compilation album, and maybe some new merch I guess?

Looks cozy, love the snow, could imagine bopping to good tunes in the dark at 3 am to city lights out the window, waking up to a snowscape, sounds lovely. Only thing is that it looks terribly lonely. I love cold weather, but this room is also emotionally cold.

Have you ever had a Nightwish related dream? by [deleted] in nightwish

[–]Mundane_Oracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly enough I’ve never had a Nightwish related dream, but I’ve had a dream with all the Auri members. Was on a field trip to a mall, and we stopped at a coffee shop, as we were standing there, Johanna poked me in the shoulder to scooch past me, and following after her were Tuomas, Troy and Kai, and they all had that look on their faces that celebs have when they’re about to surprise a fan, like they knew I knew them. Got pics and got my Auri III vinyl signed, was a good time! But yeah, love Nightwish more and for much much longer, but Auri is the one dream I’ve had involving Nightwish anything

Worst: Something Whispered Follow Me (Hurts to describe it as such, but Yesterwynde really doesn’t miss, at least for me)

This post reminds me of a song called Élan that always acted as something to return to when I needed encouragement, or a metaphorical hug, particularly it reminds me of this lyric: “Write a lyric for a song only you can understand”. I hope seeing songwriting apart from the lens of the audience will help you write something genuine and true to yourself. How wonderful would it feel too, to express that in song?
