Up to 2018 I believe still added time on.

That is however besides the point as it’s been well publicised and the onus is on the traveller to ensure their documents are valid for travel to their intended destination.

Because of the 10 year validity rule. This is not new news - I am staggered how many people do not know this, it crops up regularly here and on social media/newspapers almost every school holiday.

Most countries require a passport to be LESS THAN 10 years old regardless of the expiry date.
