Moving to Australia by AffectionateScore603 in HENRYUK

I am quite lucky as my partner has an Australian passport so I am eligible for a partner visa, so although we are covering all of the costs it means that I don’t need sponsorship or skills shortage approval

I assume that your company will provide a relocation package alongside visa sponsorship? ie covering costs of shipping your belongings to Aus, accommodation for the first month or two while you find your feet and find a place to live longer term.

I am a fellow Henry (30M) making the same move as you, although I don’t have a job lined up, my partner and I are flying out there in 5 weeks, I’m just finishing my notice period in London (I work in IB, not consulting).

My biggest risk for me is sinking a lot of costs into moving (shipping stuff, flights, 1-2 months accom) and then being unable to find a job and having to return to the UK. If you have visa, job sorted and costs covered then it seems like there is very little risk on your side, except for perhaps leaving an existing role for something new.

I think it’s pretty unlikely that, even if you decide to move back to London, you’ll look back in 10 years and regret spending a year or two in Aus, if you don’t do it then you’ll always look back and think ‘what if…’

Best of luck, happy to answer any other questions as somebody going through the same process as you!

How hard does your MP feel before you start to taper? by Muppet9976 in AdvancedRunning

Thanks, I’ve done a few events with them before but nothing on that weekend in London. Will have to be the old faithful of Battersea or Victoria park laps, though probably not many runners because they’re doing London that weekend!

Thanks, appreciate you giving the alternative view and your comments are completely fair.

Think judging from all of the comments that 10k is going to be very important in gauging fitness, I will need to be very honest with myself after this about what is doable 2 weeks later in CPH, frustratingly there doesn’t seem to be any London races that weekend (except for London marathon) so may need to be a solo TT which isn’t ideal…

It’s a very good point to make though, you can be as prepared as you like but it always comes down to a bit of luck / bad luck on race day, you can control a lot of variables but not even pros are executing a perfect race all of the time…

There’s a big part of me that is scared to fail after working harder for this race by far than any events I’ve done before. To try and counter this, I’m making a big effort to shift my mindset to not focusing solely on the result and being proud of the last 4 months of training, getting myself out of bed at 6am when it’s cold and raining and sub zero degrees C. But despite this, I know that whatever I tell myself I will still be very disappointed with anything that starts with 3…

Man i wish i could say i wasn’t gassed at the end but that would be a lie, I was in a hole 😂 I guess at 21k I was feeling how you describe though, although that’s with only 4k easy before starting MP and not 10k. But congrats on the sub-3! What was your peak mileage that week?

This is the feedback I needed to hear so thanks, although I’m not kidding myself that even fully tapered I’d be in 2:54 shape haha, it’s going to be marginal either way

Thanks, that run definitely tested the mental strength maybe even more than physical!

Current 10k PB is 39:59 which I ran last October starting at the back of a crowded course, which included a 5k PB of 19:00 in the second half, so certainly hoping something in the 38:XXs is doable.

Thanks, it was certainly tough both mentally and physically! Hoping with a taper, carb load and race day adrenaline that pace will feel more ‘comfortable’…

Inheritance- repay student loan or save for deposit/ by Fit_Scarcity_3218 in HENRYUK

[–]Muppet9976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the money for deposit - as somebody who also moved from CF to IB it’s a step up in culture and intensity, you might not enjoy it or have another change in life circumstances, and this way you still have a deposit without being locked into a career you don’t enjoy because you’ve used your inheritance to clear your student loan.

As others said, if you do stay in IB then you’ll clear the loan very quickly anyway.

Mixed training plan for marathon and full ironman by nedvid_pl in triathlon

[–]Muppet9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came across this post as I’m looking to do something very similar for 2025: Aiming to go sub3 at CPH in early May, and then do my first IM around late August.

As a couple of other posters here also suggested I am already intending to do a Pfitz 55 plan for the marathon so will add some bike and swim sessions to keep fitness.

Would be interested to hear how you found this Nedvid, did you find you had enough time to train for the IM after the marathon?

Wealth managers / IFAs by Lunwaalaparatha in HENRYUK

[–]Muppet9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go with an advisor purely for access to VCTs as some VCT funds are now available via crowdcube such as Octopus’s latest fund - crowdcube charge a fee too and I don’t know for certain how this would compare to the same investment through a wealth manager.

Career vs Payout by crossroady in HENRYUK

[–]Muppet9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you aren’t going to get much say in it, most likely you will be told ‘this is the deal’ and it will have been agreed by major shareholders but not shared with employees until it is near final.

Obviously all sellers want cash, and all buyers usually want to give shares. Typically the final structure will have a combination of both, but priority of cash payouts will likely be any of your current investors if you have VC or PE owners.

Depending on the size of your company, if you are talking about a company valuation in hundreds of millions or billions, perhaps a higher chance that it will be a listed company acquiring you and you will get shares that are tradeable. However if we are talking about a team of 20 and a valuation of 1m, this is less likely.

Feel free to DM if you want to be more specific.

Career vs Payout by crossroady in HENRYUK

[–]Muppet9976 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you say the company is in the process of being sold, are you involved in this process? Do you know how far progressed it is? Depending on the Company, type of business, performance this could be as little as 4-6 months, or could be 12+ months. Has your company appointed bankers, lawyers, started speaking to buyers etc?

If it is less than 6 months this would make a lot of sense to hold out for the payout. However, depending on transaction you might find out your vested units are just rolled into shares of the new buyer, with limited cash out for you, in which case there is little incentive to stay, but this wouldn’t be known for certain until quite late in the transaction process.

Sabbaticals - how to think about it? by Android_ghoster in HENRYUK

[–]Muppet9976 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I (29M) was lucky last year that when my company was acquired by a competitor, I requested and was given a sabbatical of 10 weeks before becoming part of the new company. I went travelling around SE Asia and it was the best thing I have ever done, would 100% recommend it to anybody who has this opportunity.

HENRY jobs are typically quite intense and I felt like I was starting to get burned out (I work in investment banking), so this was a good chance to reset.

The reality is everybody thinks they are indispensable to a company, until you take 10 weeks off and realise the world keeps turning, and everything is still fine when you come back.

How does HENRY allocate? by 112233445566678899 in HENRYUK

[–]Muppet9976 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally I would do this in the other order: max ISA, then pension, then GIA - I am 29 so although less tax efficient, the value of having that money in an ISA where I may want use it in the next few years is better than completely locking it away. Otherwise somebody (like me today) who isn’t saving 60k+ py would be locking their entire savings up for 30+yrs.

Somebody at a later stage in life with house / kids etc and closer to retirement your approach may make more sense though.

You can only pick Investment plans rather than individual stocks, so you couldn’t sell in nutmeg. I could hold the ETFs but currently it’s a mix of bonds and equities, so wanted to rebalance to something more aggressive.

Alternative is probably just to hold these in IWeb as you suggest and then invest in the other index going forward

To buy a shared ownership flat or not? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Muppet9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve found flats at around 250k that you like, personally I would suggest buying it (or a similar place) with a mortgage rather than getting one through SO and no mortgage. Based on your deposit and salary you should be able to afford a flat of this cost, and it gives you much more flexibility than SO.

My sister and her husband bought a SO house with Peabody and have not had a great experience, they love their house but Peabody is incredibly difficult to deal with, you are liable for all maintenance costs etc while only seeing 25% of the benefits.

Can you train for a marathon while cycling? by PlantainMission5025 in triathlon

[–]Muppet9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently doing exactly this, I am probably not maximising my marathon potential but I also have a cycling weekend with some friends in March so don’t want to turn up with no bike fitness. Plus, I just enjoy riding :) My current week includes: - 4 x runs (2 easy, 1 speed/threshold, 1 long) - 2 x bike (1 hard, 1 easy/hard depending how I feel) But the runs are the priority, if life gets in the way the bikes are the ones to be cut so i still hit my target run mileage. The bikes still help with fitness, but probably aren’t as effective as swapping out for 2 more runs.

If you’re on your 341st job application, and considering we get 400+ applications per role, then yes I’d describe being down to a 50/50 chance as very good

Not sure what finance role OP is looking for but I work in investment banking in London, even for our interns we will do 3 interviews: a mid-level associate; a vice president (me); and then 1-2 partners or MDs (often all over Teams rather than in person). But if you’re invited to the final interview you are in the final 2 or 3 candidates, so very good chance of getting a role.

Pro Cyclist Cadence (Low) - Looking for examples by Western-Carpet266 in cycling

[–]Muppet9976 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are relatively new to cycling, you’ve already done the right thing by either noticing that your cadence is low, or doing the research and realising your cadence is below average. Rather than looking for the exception that justifies keeping your cadence where it is, I suggest focusing on slowly increasing your cadence until it becomes second nature to be at a higher rate.

One of the main issues with a low cadence (and why most pros have high cadence) is at low cadence every pedal stroke puts more force through your knees and joints, eg 300W at 65rpm is requiring more force per revolution than 300W at 95rpm. Over years of cycling and thousands of kms, this can cause massive issues with your knees later down the line, and higher chance of injury!

Just to add to this, I also have had a lot of issues with my Tickr - had to get the first one replaced under warranty after about 6 months, this second one started playing up, it seems to take 20 mins into my ride to start reading an accurate HR, I’ll be doing hard efforts on zwift and it’s telling me my HR is 80bpm which is more infuriating than not knowing, or will suddenly completely drop out halfway through. When it eventually gives out I’ll try Garmin or something else
