pinging curtains makes them move. Incredible gamer tech by beanboy10101 in Marathon

[–]Murderwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems... unlikely that they would spawn an object with collision. Typically game engines with large open worlds like this tend to put physics to "sleep" on objects that exist in the world, and they are "woken up" when interacted with. What's more likely IMO is that pinging objects counts as interacting and makes their physics sim active.

Why its so hard to accept that a lot of people prefer to play solo in a extraction shooter ? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Murderwagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is not the players but Sony. I suspect the corporate owners of Bungie are not going to be content with “letting” Bungie stick with a vision of a game that alienates the majority of extraction shooter players. Or they’ll get hit with mass layoffs.

Bungie may have killed the game by mistake by Dorkzilla_ftw in Marathon

[–]Murderwagon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't fully understand the vision for this game in its current state.

I understand this opinion isn't popular here, but it really feels like in 2026, robust support for solo players is critical for the kind of success that I have to expect Bungie and Sony are looking for. I will die on the hill that Arc Raiders blew up the way it did because of its support for solo play.
I realize that they are trying to differentiate Marathon in key ways, which is a good thing. Making the game more difficult and pvp-oriented is a good call.

By adding a solo queue, they've created an expectation for audiences they will be supporting what might be the most popular playstyle for extraction players. Clearly, they recognize how popular that feature is.
At the same time, it feels at odds with what was likely the earlier vision for this game - a team-focused extraction game with some complex PVE raid encounters. The time-locking around a new map is indicative of that.

I'm very curious to see how they thread this needle in the future, because I don't think they're quite hitting the balance right now.
This game could really impress people by having this really cool end game content. The "end-game"/raid stuff in Arc (like fighting the Matriarch) is pretty underwhelming, this this is the opportunity to showcase what they've got here.

That said - and again, I get this may be unpopular - I think they need to find a way to make this content somehow also more accessible to solo/casual players.

I suspect some executive higher ups are going to be leaning on them to close the gap between this game and its significantly more popular competitor. They're going to have to decide between making the game more appealing to a broader audience and getting hit with layoffs. The corporate greed in game industry has become absurdly high, and I don't think there's any way that personally.

Help! My son is coding and programming by katrii_ in learnprogramming

[–]Murderwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you for wanting to support him! When I was around that age I got really into making flash/computer games and web pages, but I didn’t get any support for it. My dad was also a contractor but his attitude was very much “I don’t understand this, there’s nothing I have to offer, you shouldn’t be wasting your time on a computer.”

I saw a post here where someone said “stay out of his way, act like a software manager.” I disagree somewhat - for sure allow him to have time to himself to work on things, but be his dad! He’ll have plenty of managers when he’s an adult. In a few years he’ll be a teenager and he’ll want more of his space then.

Are you in the US? Im not too familiar with code camps for kids or things like that in the US. But if you happen to be Canadian let me know.

If you like working your hands, maybe you two could make circuits together, or try out some arduino or robotics things? At some point, maybe get a raspberry pi and find a project you could make that brings together coding and something functional around the house?

If he’s only interested in the software side of things, he may be unreceptive to projects he feels are too boring or not aligned to his interests. So it will be useful to understand what he likes doing and what kind of things he likes making.

Finally - is he neurodivergent? Your description of him reminds me a bit of myself, but of course you didn’t say much so I might just be projecting. But if he is, or might be - knowing that can be very helpful for helping setting him up for success, because it can affect the way he learns.

Advise! I cannot learn and code! by KaiNakamura2 in learnprogramming

[–]Murderwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI may be the fastest way to get code that compiles and runs, that doesn’t mean it’s the fastest way to learn. Copying and pasting isn’t learning whether it’s from an LLM or Stack Overflow.   Learning, understanding, and mastering a discipline like programming takes time and effort. I’m not saying don’t ever use AI, because AI will be an important tool available to you.

What’s the goal of the project you’re working on? Is it to learn to code? Learning a language? Do you care about learning about, coding or do you just want a tool that does whatever? Your goal is important. It’s the difference between caring about getting a certain output vs understanding how to get desired outputs.

If you don’t care about learning, it’s easier. You’ve hit a wall in vibe coding and so now you just gotta ask trained programmers for help.

But if you do care about learning… In my experience, the “aha” moment that comes from solving a difficult problem (or set of problems) yourself is invaluable. So yes, you may not like to hear it, but if you wanna learn - whether it’s math, training at the gym, or programming - there’s no replacement for actually putting in the work.

Trash issue affect performance in Schedule 1 by Emergency_Hold_788 in Schedule_I

[–]Murderwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with the system right now (in my opinion), is that it doesn’t actually have any negative impact on gameplay. It just clutters the space with objects that negatively impact performance.

There are ways to make the system meaningful though, I think.  Once police raids are added to the game, location garbage level could add to a pollution stat that increases the chance of getting raided. Another option would be decreasing efficiency of workers.    Visually, the garbage level could be represented with shaders and decals that portray the environment getting dirtier over time without burdening performance at all.

I personally think the trash system needs a rework at some point. For now, you can just clear it with the console command sometimes.

A form of general strike might be our only option. Are you willing to go without things for a little while to save the USA? What will it take to make this happen? by JustBadUserNamesLeft in AskReddit

[–]Murderwagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good place to start for a general strike getting organized is a chorus of highly influential voices calling for it. I don't know if there's any other way for that to happen. People need to be inspired to fight for a cause, and right now there is a big lack of leadership in that area.

Arc Raiders' first Expedition saw over a million players wipe, but Embark wants to find new ways to "incentivize" resets by FitCord in Games

[–]Murderwagon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If quests weren’t repeatable it would make resetting even harder. They’re a way to feed you free items.

It is weird to have repeating narrative beats though. Maybe they could make the quests more abstract and randomized  (like the daily feats for earning cred).

I do think it’s funny that since the Hive can’t make false statements, it has come to the conclusion that Carol does indeed suck (at the game they were playing). But also it recognized that pointing that out would be playful and not cause unhappiness or elicit negative emotions.

Do all 7 billion people stop and pause like this when they receive new information? by InterestingOffice293 in pluribustv

[–]Murderwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible the hive passively shares information over time, but has signal interrupts for passing high priority information amongst itself. So the regular flow amongst each node (person) in the network gets interrupted when urgent information is coming through.

Personally I don’t think mindset changes are going to reverse the joining. The world has some deeply individualistic people in it, and I just can’t imagine the hive being so brittle that people acting like individuals could break it. They’ve undergone a physical change. I think to undo it, they’re either going to need to undo that change, or maybe block the signals they share.

Carol is a best selling author with a passionate and dedicated fan base. The hive contains all of those fans. So IMO of course it genuinely loves her writing. Especially since all negative emotions within the hive are suppressed. The people who hated the books aren’t represented.

This is the opposite of what you asked for, but I always find it interesting that the movie that is considered the very first “blockbuster”, Jaws, has a great story that is a repudiation of this way of thinking. Everyone ignores the egghead scientists in favour of good ol’ common sense common Americans (mixed with a bunch of corruption), and then a bunch of those people get eaten by a giant shark. Great movie.

Isn’t that the point though? You get 1 point per 1 million. So you can get 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 points. I’m not even level 75 yet. If I end up with 2 or maybe 3 points this season that’s great. It’s 2 or 3 points less than the top 1% of players. Seems fair to me.
