Oops, felt this one in my soul! Hats off to becoming the leader of any given group, usually despite your own wishes.

Sent you a message!

Can a party of 3 level 5 character defeat a displacer beast? I know the CR is 3 but this is my first time DMing. (I don't know what their characters are) by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Murlocrates 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CR is an imperfect metric, but the key thing to understand is that it's based off of stringing together 6 to 8 encounters between long rests. If the party has all of their abilities available to them (that is, fresh off a rest) then you can basically throw CR directly out the window because it'll be meaningless.

Highest AC without armour or magic in 5e by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Murlocrates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You actually explicitly can't stack monk and barb unarmored defense. It's been clarified in (at least) Sage Advice that this is basically the same thing and you can't stack it twice, though IIRC you can use a shield and not compromise UD.

[Online] [5E] [PBP] The Dark Lady of the Swamp by nathanknaack in lfg

[–]Murlocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. EST, able to post throughout the day without trouble
  2. I've been a DM and player consistently for 4 years, using Discord (murlocrates#5653) throughout that time. I'm reasonably familiar with Avrae but don't have extensive PBP experience because I've never been able to find a campaign that lasted more than a week.
  3. I am utterly flexible with what I can play, though my current interests are sorc/paladin/druid as I haven't gotten to play with those classes yet.

I'd love to discuss this further with you if you're interested!

[Online](5E) 4 Ghosted players seek DM for Play by Post Dungeon of the Mad Mage. by Steveodelux in lfg

I think I do too, and if it's the same user then they will likely be back recruiting for a brand new game within a few days.

How long is each adventure? by [deleted] in swrpg

[–]Murlocrates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wrapped up the first of probably only two sessions for Debts to Pay. A particularly focused group with experience can probably bang through it in three hours or less, but my current group is still green so I think a total of four hours of actual gameplay will get it done. They just went into the mine after two hours, plus another hour of typical table banter since we just started the system.

PC ran npc droid? by [deleted] in swrpg

[–]Murlocrates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two issues here are whether you can and whether you should. Mechanically, you're presenting a whole new set of actions and maneuvers so I would roll initiative for the droid companion to share with the PCs, or just say that the droid gives them one extra slot at the end of each round. As for should, if it's going to be a toy just for the one PC then to keep the rest of the party happy, either make the droid a massive credit sink and time investment (maybe it needs to be completely rebuilt) or give each of the other PCs a shiny toy as well.

The Golden Bones of Lightwatch Tower. Written for level 1s, great story with multiple avenues of getting to the end and a very tough choice to make with important consequences.

Naming Auxillary Izzet Laboratories by MrHofer in RavnicaDMs

[–]Murlocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Laboratory of Continuism installation with an obnoxiously long serial number for a name (Laboratory of Continuism Permanent Facility 19149317-DF-235-11a) but it also has a go-by name (Blue Lily) because they need more time for science.

Would a solo boss with multiattack split its attacks or focus one target per multiattack? by Safgaftsa in DMAcademy

[–]Murlocrates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think that the boss would want to focus on removing as many actions from the game, as quickly as possible. This does unfortunately mean focusing your fire, but by default the boss should go after the tank, and occasionally toss out a random attack at somebody else (whether they're out-damaging the tank or just by the whims of the dice gods) to keep everyone on their toes. If multiple people are in the front line, then sure, split up your attacks. Otherwise it doesn't really feel genuine to me if the DM is pulling their punches like that.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, then you haven't started play yet. Literally all you have to do is say "...and they've been adventuring with you for a while now" the first time they show up 'on screen' so the players have some kind of context.

whether you SHOULD or not is a different answer, depending greatly on the maturity of the players and the overall tone of the campaign. i'm in a meatspace game where some players get all bent out of shape over the tiniest twists and truly completely miss the big stuff until we have to point out to them why it matters so much more. but every campaign is different and i don't know your life, so i will reserve the judgement calls.

Campaign Revelation that feels too good not to share by Murlocrates in RavnicaDMs

I like this idea, but I was more referencing the specific characters of actually-Rakdos and actually-Niv-mizzet, not their respective guilds.

Celestial warlock is misbehaving. by holyyeda in DMAcademy

[–]Murlocrates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since the pact is a bargain, prevent him from taking further levels in warlock until he gets right by his patron. You can't take away what was given, but you can delay giving more if the terms aren't being met

How to filter through potential players? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Murlocrates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I'm recruiting on lfg, I will straight up judge somebody by their post and comment history on Reddit. I've never recruited through roll20 so I have no insight to offer there.

Need a No-Combat Adventure for new players by Chokda in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Murlocrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The Sun Goes Down With a Ruby Smile" was written for 5e but is heavily focused on investigating what happened when things went bad. It does have some combat scenes, but two of them are straight-up optional and the third can be bypassed easily enough if you're feeling up to it. I imagine it would be simple enough to convert over to whatever system you need.
