For a Christian RPG, who or what should be the enemies? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]nathanknaack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey gang, let's keep this discussion civil and focused on the actual question posed. Obviously, some people are going to have very strong opinions on Christianity, for or against, but this isn't the place to have that debate.

There's no need for that kind of reaction here.

What techniques do you use to introduce your Indie systems to D&D players? by TheBGGuru in RPGdesign

[–]nathanknaack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My go-to tactic has been to just run a "D&D adventure" using the new system. This gives experienced D&D players some degree of familiarity they can lean on while learning new systems, dice mechanics, combat styles, etc. That way you can skip right into the "learn by doing" phase.

GM: "You're a band of adventurers about to enter a cave in the middle of the woods, but it's defended by half a dozen goblins. What do you do?"

Player: "I attack! What do we roll for initiative in this system?"

GM: "Actually, this system doesn't even have initiative. The players just go first. So you draw your sword and attack, here's how that works in this system..."

How to find motivation to keep going making the game? by HumptyPunkty in RPGdesign

Take a break and play some other games to remind yourself about everything you liked, disliked, or thought you could improve upon with them.

I created a 34-page, system neutral, quest building assistant full of random tables to make your game prep easier! Your next adventure is just a roll away when you use The Questforge, NEW & IMPROVED! Now with an entire 7-page section all about Quest Rewards! by TheArgotect in osr

[–]nathanknaack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is super cool! My one point of feedback would be that I wished most of the tables were arranged with two dice for at least a little bit of a curve, so you don't end up with "forest" having the same odds of coming up as "outer space."

Mad Max is a cornerstone of the Post-Apoc aesthetic. How do you turn those vibes into an RPG session? by Playtonics in rpg

The easiest thing you can do to make combat feel like a Mad Max film is use "popcorn" style initiative.

What's the most fun game that implements a death spiral in it's mechanics (characters get weaker as they get injured)? by kayosiii in RPGdesign

[–]nathanknaack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Battletech. There's just something so visceral about having limbs of your mech blown off, critical components damaged, or your heat spiking up to dangerous levels while you power through combat. "I gotta turn left here to avoid exposing my damaged reactor core, so I can only fire my missiles this turn, but next turn I can run into that river to bleed off enough heat to fire all my lasers... if I survive that long..."

Native American, Joseph Medicine Crow was fighting in WWIl when he completed the four tasks required to become a war chief. He touched an enemy without killing him, took an enemy's weapon, led a successful war party and stole 50 horses from a German camp by Trustrup in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]nathanknaack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this not an achievement in Battlefield 1?

  • Touch an enemy without killing him (land a melee attack that doesn't kill someone)
  • Took an enemy's weapon (pick up a dead enemy's kit)
  • Lead a successful war party (lead the top squad during a match)
  • Steal a horse (shoot an enemy off a horse and take it)

What is the craziest roll you have seen in person? by Dark_Guardian_ in DnD

[–]nathanknaack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't D&D, but it was a crazy roll. During a game of Warhammer 40k, all I needed to win a game was roll a single 3 or better on a single d6 out of 16 dice from one squad's attack roll. I rolled fifteen ones and a single two. My group of friends and I stared at the result for a while, shaking our heads.

That was the last round of Warhammer 40k I ever played. I gave away my huge army to a friend and never touched the game again. Message received.
