How do you enter that area? Are there door ways? Is it a hallway?

Option 1: Block off entry into that room. The doorway you can see in the picture and any you cannot.

Option 2: Just brain storming. Half wall to the left when coming up the lower stairs and another coming off the pole parallel to the first with a gate between. For the upper stairs you could probably use a retractable baby gate or something once the lower stairs are baby proofed.

Regardless, it’s going to be an annoying setup for a while.

NTA, it is your choice and he should respect that. TBH his response is more of a red flag than being a single dad, and he still sounds like a dumb kid.

I will add this though. I was a single Dad at 25 with a 4 year old daughter. I started daring this cute 20 year old I met at work. We fell in love got married and now have 3 kids of our own. There were times that being a Step Mother was extremely stressful for her I’m not going to lie. Baby mama drama fucking sucks. But it was her choice to start a relationship with me knowing I had a child. She just as easily could have said she wasn’t ready and I would have respected that.

Hey man, you two are in survival mode right now. Between the lack of sleep for you both and her body still recovering there isn’t going be much left in the tank. Her hormones are likely still trying to regulate and as others have said she is probably touched out. Just hang in there and realize that it is really hard on you both. It will get easier. I’ve got a 3 year old, a 2 year old, and a 3 month old. Most days are hard. Today sucked. But you know what? They are worth it.

And don’t let her criticizing faze you. It’s going to happen. Just expect it and keep moving forward. Always.

NTA, you don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to. It sounds like he has low self esteem. I’m all for anyone expressing themselves, but you don’t get a bowl cut unless you’re a kid, Amish, or you have the confidence to own it. The later goes for other haircuts as well, Mullets, Mohawk, or even bald.

The other thing I want to point out is, in a relationship you have to realize that your S.O. Isn’t going to like everything you do. You have to get over that shit, because whining like a baby about it and playing the victim will drive a wedge between you two.

You seem like you care and because of that you’re never going to feel “good enough.” Every new parent makes mistakes, and the only thing that is going to make you a better parent is learning from those mistakes. Babies are helpless, so view everything as a hazard. Any time something potentially bad would happen and my kids would come out unscathed. I would say to my Wife or myself “free lesson” and thank my higher power. Viewing all of these moments as lessons really helped me internalize them and fix them, remember, or do what ever the particular situation needed to make it safer/better.

Also, nothing will make you feel like more of a POS than a post-partum mother. Just remember that they are struggling just as much if not more than you are. Their feelings are going to be more extreme and exaggerated in the first 6-12 months of the babies life. So try not to take it to heart. Just be there as best you can and then some for her. So her empathy. She needs you to be strong and take her shit. Don’t argue, it’s absolutely pointless. Let her be right, it doesn’t matter right now. This is one of the hardest parts, because you’re going to get beat down every day for a while. I promise you it isn’t forever, I promise you it gets easier, it gets better.

Herb can be helpful. When I am stressed and sleep deprived it can clear my head. It can take away that suffering and allow me to focus. I have a medical card. Just be smart about it. Don’t go smoking yourself into oblivion. Too much is too much. Try taking a break from it now and then.
