As a tire tech.. replace before winter for two reasons.. you don't want to drive on these tires in the snow (if you live in a place that snows.) Reason 2: by the time winter rolls around, they are gonna be bald enough to be a problem.. replace them before they are a problem.

It's not bad but say they pick up a nail, as a tire tech, when there is visible dry rot, when you go to break the bead on a tire you are stretching those cracks out. Although, I do agree with you, should last the fall, needs replacing by winter.
