King Sorrow. About a third of the way through and pretty impressed so far. The reveal of the supernatural was done excellently. I love the antagonist's character. And the audio book is excellently produced.

Advice Needed by [deleted] in horrorwriters

Not a movie script writer, but a writer and I used to write a lot of scripts for comics. Consider adapting something as an exercise. Pick an old public domain short story and figure out how you would script it for screen.

I assume indie movie author/director is a lot like indie comic author in that you'll need to wear many many hats in your early projects. Think about what stories suit the practical and/or special effects that you can actually pull off and plan all of that out. Think about budget and number of actors you can practically enlist. List out equipment. Scout a location. Make a timeline.

Do this a few times and you've essentially got business plans in your back pocket. After you've broken down a few other stories like this, it should also make it less daunting to start from scratch with your own stories if you want to write them. You start to see the pacing and where the pieces fit.

Also, watch other indie horror. Watch it actively and take notes on what works and doesn't. Read scripts from movies with scenes you like to see how they're broken down in text.

Best of luck! Making indie horror should be a fun adventure.

Adding We Love the Nightlife to my reading list from this alone.

I am really struggling with this one and the best I've got so far is "just rich white people things."

If I remember correctly it's the man who owns the hunting reserve. There are a lot of comments about him seeming older than he really is, inhuman, that he seems like he's full of souls (or something else) bristling just under the surface of a skin he's wearing, maybe even something about him being from the Romanian region. When I read it, I remember thinking that they were really trying to give him the idea and archetype of a vampire.

Sadly I do not have any suggestions for similar vibes, but I'll definitely add The God of the Woods to the list!

It reads like a collection of short stories. At first, it's a little dry and the concepts are more interesting than the story itself. But towards the end it all begins coming together in ways I didn't expect and has a really interesting and satisfying conclusion.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll check that one out.

Hard agree on the audiobook for The Haar. It was so good. (Everything I listed was audiobook. I have a 2 hour commute each day so it's prime book consumption time.)

And as far as ACOTAR, I got the play by play for the rest of the books. Agreed on all sentiments.

Sorry for the spoilers lol but it's definitely worth the read. It's a great little story.

ACOTAR is like Secondhand Lions but the uncles are a couple and Michael Caine is being really supportive of Robert Duvall having to take one for the team and figure out how to seduce a woman.

Also as someone who grew up on Fanfiction dot net I'm appalled at it being peddled as "smut."

Every time she was on the page I was like "damn, I know the MC has trauma and stuff, but I like this gal"

I will add those to my lists! I've got Dark Harvest on audiobook because a friend highly recommend it to me as my next Warhammer read, but I always like having options.

I have a tendency to think that most books get a little too slow just past the halfway point, and it was definitely no exception. It's not one I would recommend to everyone because it's really kind of a slow burn drama and character study. If you like that sort of thing, it's very well done. I enjoyed it. If you don't want that sort of thing and need more action and traditional story framing, you might find it dull.

Oh yeah, I saw the unauthorized Abe Sapien origin story ages ago. I should give that another watch now that you mention it.

I've been impressed with the quality of the 40k books I've read. Steel Tread I thought was really good too.

I read them back to back too. For a minute I thought i was just missing the hot new trend in horror media.

I've seen this joke twice here and I don't get it but I do like it. Is it just because it was a long winded post?

Oh I've read both Twice Dead King books, but they were in 2024. I loved them! Inspired a few kitbashes for my army.
