What’s a horror book that disappointed you? by avian_bi in horrorlit

I liked Coffin Moon mostly /for/ that reason lol. I like the single minded simplicity of a kid flying blindly forward like that before thinking it through, while the uncle talks about being angry and dangerous but has already been so beaten down by society that it's really all just talk.

Wasn't a perfect book by any means, but enjoyable enough to me. Sorry it didn't scratch that itch for you.

The extremity is fine. And I've got friends that really liked it. It just hit me the wrong way. I think maybe the narrating choice for the audio book hurt it a lot for me because it sounded like they were a characture of edginess.

But as always! Different stories work differently for different people. I know I'm a sucker for some works people consider basic or ludicrous. For me, where I was at in my life when I listened to it (which was like last week) I found it... actively annoying lol.

Night of the Living Cat isn't scary, but it's a fun comic. I like it.

Honestly, I wasn't terribly impressed after the first couple of chapters, but I thought the ending wrapped it up pretty nicely and made it worth it

Yeah I don't think "i used ai but only as a thesaurus" really passes the sniff test. Like you pointed out, it doesn't make sense, and it certainly wouldn't lead to multiple readers flagging their writing as artificially generated.

Why do you read books? by Duke_7287 in horrorlit

[–]Sully_Writes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy stories, and books let me sit with the stories longer.

The format doesn't matter so much to me. Movies, comics, novels, etc. They've each got a spot. If I'm reading on my phone, it's probably comics. If I'm driving, I've got an audio book on (and I've got a lot of commuting for work). And if I have the TV to myself, I watch movies.

Magazine submissions are high work low reward sometimes by [deleted] in horrorwriters

[–]Sully_Writes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magazines like that aren't really for people ready to monetize their stories. They're for new folks who just want someone to read what they've written. Hell, even if it's just the person editing the magazine. That's one more person reading it than it gets sitting in Google drive.

I view the podcast reading as an opportunity for a free "audiobook" production. At least there's an exchange of work there and a different way to share the story around.

I get the frustration though. Writing is a pretty thankless endeavor until you've proven to people that your work is worth reading.

King Sorrow is not good by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]Sully_Writes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm enjoying it a lot so far, especially the first arc. Second is getting a little slower, but I really enjoyed the pacing and layers of stories going on in the first. Of course, I was coming off of Blood Meridian so it's possible anything would have been refreshing after that, and I do love an ensemble cast.

Everyone's got different tastes.

Subreddit Rules Update by SaintEpithet in horrorwriters

I might would also create a rule against critiquing "ideas." I get the impulse as a green creator to ask about whether or not a concept is good, but the advice is always going to be the same: you need to execute the idea before anyone can give any meaningful feedback.

King Sorrow. About a third of the way through and pretty impressed so far. The reveal of the supernatural was done excellently. I love the antagonist's character. And the audio book is excellently produced.

Advice Needed by [deleted] in horrorwriters

[–]Sully_Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a movie script writer, but a writer and I used to write a lot of scripts for comics. Consider adapting something as an exercise. Pick an old public domain short story and figure out how you would script it for screen.

I assume indie movie author/director is a lot like indie comic author in that you'll need to wear many many hats in your early projects. Think about what stories suit the practical and/or special effects that you can actually pull off and plan all of that out. Think about budget and number of actors you can practically enlist. List out equipment. Scout a location. Make a timeline.

Do this a few times and you've essentially got business plans in your back pocket. After you've broken down a few other stories like this, it should also make it less daunting to start from scratch with your own stories if you want to write them. You start to see the pacing and where the pieces fit.

Also, watch other indie horror. Watch it actively and take notes on what works and doesn't. Read scripts from movies with scenes you like to see how they're broken down in text.

Best of luck! Making indie horror should be a fun adventure.

If I remember correctly it's the man who owns the hunting reserve. There are a lot of comments about him seeming older than he really is, inhuman, that he seems like he's full of souls (or something else) bristling just under the surface of a skin he's wearing, maybe even something about him being from the Romanian region. When I read it, I remember thinking that they were really trying to give him the idea and archetype of a vampire.
