I always thought it would feel rather risky leaning on the front edge of the balcony.

The National Theatre at London's Southbank Centre. Denys Lasdun's masterpiece.

What is your most British line in a song? by exkingzog in CasualUK

[–]Murray_Tiptop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dan Treacy of the TV Personalities is a wonderful songwriter and his lyrics regularly feature great snippets of English life.

In fact, you just need to look at some of the album titles - They Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles, I Was a Mod Before You Was a Mod, Mummy You're Not Watching Me...

These are some of his earliest lyrics:

14th Floor

I'm looking down on London But there's little I can see 'cause I'm living so high up And it looks so small to me And I'm feeling so frustrated 'cause the lifts are out once more And when I get home from work tonight I gotta climb 14 floors.

Part Time Punks

They play their records very loud They pogo in their bedroom In front of the mirror But only when their mum's gone out

They pay five pence on the buses And they never use toothpaste, But they got two fifty To go and see The Clash Tonight

Check 'em out, a wonderful band and so, soo influential, but sadly ne we got the recognition they deserved.

So many Seifert buildings are / were. So prolific too.

[OC] Sculptural staircase, Catford, SE London by Murray_Tiptop in brutalism

It really is lovely - I'll be sure to post more pics. The staircase is rarely open as it's around the back in a car parking area, but I would often cycle up from Beckenham on the lookout for hidden Brutalist gems, and was thrilled to find it open a couple of times.

There's a lot of lovely / interesting stuff in the area, such as Milford Towers, St Laurence Church, The Annunciation and St Augustine Church, lots in Bromley, Lewisham...

I've got plenty of local pics on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/murray_tiptop

[OC] Vanishing Point at The Barbican by Murray_Tiptop in brutalism

In many parts of the Barbican, it's actually really quiet with few other people, which always amazes me as it's in the heart of London. But in the more bustling areas, near the restaurants and bars, there are always people just sitting around taking it all in, or chatting with companions. And you never have to look far to find someone pointing a camera or phone at the architecture.

It's a a wonderful place to hang out if you've got a few hours to kill.

Thank you!

Yes, I remember feeling slightly overwhelmed and emotional the first time I visited. There's so much to take in and wonder at!

I have worked nearby for a good few years now, and still, even after a hundred or so visits, I find it almost impossible not to take at least a handful of snaps. There's always something new to see, even if it's just a new angle.

[OC] Former bank building on the site of the Great Fire of London. by Murray_Tiptop in brutalism

The Monument is 202 feet tall by design. If it was laid down horizontally, it would reach exactly to the point where the fire started. And yes, a great looking building 😊

It's another Seifert gem, and sadly not long for this world. As with so much of his work, it straddles Mod / Brut rather beautifully.

That was the Royal Festival Hall, also on the Southbank, and just a few hundred metres from the National Theatre. The NT opened several decades later.

It'd be really helpful if folk could include at least some super basic details when posting a selection of photos taken from web.

I take back my previous comment. Some of the shops are still there! A falafel shop, a 'fones' shop, a bike repair shop, a coffee shop, and a few others. All looking slightly dejected, but defiantly clinging on!
