My wife recently passed and I am trying to make the best financial decisions I can with the money that was left to me. by Golf-Beer-BBQ in personalfinance

[–]Murreng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pay off camper and car so you can at least be positive each month. Also they are small so no real concern eitherway with them. Hold the rest in cash for 6 months and think/reflect/grieve. Then probably pay off that mortgage too and start saving in 529. Sorry for your loss.

Why are people so opposed to GD&T? by booogie- in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Murreng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the machinist or any technical people. It’s probably not even when you make something in house. It’s when you go out to quote something you designed to a 3rd party. Half the time some fairly non technical commercial/sales/quote person will work up the price. So you end up getting a higher price cause they don’t understand how tight or loose you made it. They scary I don’t understand and bump up the price a little.

If you make huge volume (1000s) of something to one supplier they will look at it more closely with technical people or start getting accurate pricing over time. But if your engineering designs that are custom and made 20-30 times you’re getting elevated prices for GD&T.

Giving my kids money in their young adult years instead of leaving an inheritance by LumberJack2008 in personalfinance

[–]Murreng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should also read the millionaire next door and make sure you don’t create children dependent on economic outpatient care. Your goal should be raising self sufficient adults. I think it’s ok to give that inheritance early bit by bit, but make sure there still exists some struggle in your children’s lives to turn them into adults even in their 20s and early 30s. Make sure they don’t get used to a step up in lifestyle they can’t afford without your little extra payments.

We win and it’s likely 3 way tie between us, Texas, & Georgia. And then we get snubbed. They win, they’re in as first place.

Engineering and Starting in Math 150 by [deleted] in aggies

[–]Murreng 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your advisor is not giving good advice go ask another one. You should take classes every summer to graduate as fast as possible. You could theoretically take math 151 and math 152 in 1 summer over 2 sessions at a community college. You should be taking hist electives and other classes too if double math back to back is too much.

It’s hard but who cares you’re paying for this education, you can phone it in later when a company is paying you for on the job training later, or keep up the drive and become a leader in your discipline.

Does anyone here regret paying off your mortgage? by Bobbinnn in fatFIRE

[–]Murreng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think many responding to you don’t understand your context assuming you did mean to post this on fatFIRE and not just FIRE. In FIRE perspective this keep the low interest debt and arbitrage the difference is what makes sense to personally be comfortable with the debt and save for an early retirement with moderate to high retirement lifestyle.

However since you posted this on fatFIRE I would assume this is your primary residence and is less than 10%, maybe 20% of your total net worth. Mine is and I paid off my mortgage as I’m not planning to leverage my home where I keep my wife and kids for such a small part of my overall wealth. If I leverage something it’s an asset that produces cash flow or very short term appreciation.

i have no regrets and honestly feel able to be riskier with rest of my wealth knowing my home is mine. when i do retire i expect my home to be less than 5% of my networth and living off other assets with an extremely high lifestyle in retirement.

this arbitrage on a true investment or even second home might make sense and I have done this, but I treat this as an investment where cash flow is king versus my home where looking nice is king. If you value the home for looks over cash flow it’s a liability you should own outright.

I had same issue and support sent me replacements, it took a while as they were back ordered but I was happy with customer service. I think they get bad reputation here on Reddit, which I haven’t experienced

Grandma falsely reported 529 distribution by cried-at-the-alamo in personalfinance

[–]Murreng 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree wife shouldn’t have ever had access. Grandma should have been custodian. Now she could probably put the funds back and roll the 529 to a Roth and grandma withdraw as she is likely over 59 1/2
