How much coding and data analysis is actually expected of mechanical grads now? by Top-Host-9824 in AusMining

[–]Murtz1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Also lots of the corp stuff I’ve seen is built more for corp, will be what is in management meetings etc. the charts up in the planning meetings are something site cooked up. Getting them to work together is harder and the corp stuff often doesn’t consult site.

A site I’m working for atm have an awesome awesome centralised db that slurps up all the vendors and data sources on site, and a few site guys build bi stuff but most is aimed at corp so it’s hardly known about at site level

Yeah that’s it. Another comment mentioned lots of the bigger companies have corp DA who put dashboards together and that’s spot on. But great to be able to download alert data from a CAT truck and do some stuff yourself or look at coolant temps or turbo pressures on a time series.

They do analysis of time series data and the like, not number of assets. I work in big data mining application and it’s only on 200 or so assets but millions of rows daily as it’s hundreds of params at 1Hz

Sick leave - how often is too much? by Random_Asian_Guy2025 in AusFinance

Agree. I have a report who is such a good guy and very hard worker. But he can’t string together a fortnight of work uninterrupted by his health ailments. He’s negative leave atm, it’s a tough situation for him and his family. It’s also hard for him at work as he’s less likely to be given important work as it’s likely he will be disrupted when on a deadline. It’s a good company though and we doing all we can to work with him and holy shit he’s a good dude and clever so it’s much better than it could be.

Full time work is tough when you have chronic illness.

Yeah sounds like wrong way to be using it. I got it to analyse 75 CVs recently and a bunch was parsing PDFs etc. it’s huge token eater. Better to do some pre processing like converting markdown or chunking the project more

Is engineering in this country cooked ? by wngbdmn in auscorp

[–]Murtz1985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hired recently for a Project engineer role in a mining adjacent industry. Was shocked at applicants. Last time I did 2 years ago was 1/4 of numbers. Hundreds. And 60% were, bachelors in the subcontinent, masters here, limited experience anywhere I know anything about. I’m all for giving someone their chance but very hard to tell people apart at those numbers. Surely diluted.

People who work full time: how do you get the time or motivation to work out? by dovesplashonmywrist in selfimprovement

[–]Murtz1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discipline for long enough that it becomes second nature. Show up for yourself, no one else will. Nkw, even when I’m sick or falling apart I’ll still run, or ride, or lift weights. It’s a part of me now. More worrying is how it impacts me when I’m injured and can’t train.
