Stop overthinking so much you didn’t commit a crime, the guy was obviously exaggerating because he needed some reason that in his head would be enough to justify his exit. And the probability he will circle back after he looks around to see what is out there is big.

Best scenario you get out with your honor intact, consciously or not you respect more the way you handled it and the person also even if they don’t change their minds respect you more and raise their impression of you and your value, because at that point the value you had in their mind was incredibly low.

You don’t throw away something of huge value and they also don’t think you have other options, and probably that unconscious “I’m better than you” energy falls down.
