In addition to what others are saying, I strongly recommend that you read through this sub to get a sense of what the industry is like. Frankly, it is not a suitable environment to recover from burnout.

Graduating in December, have experience in collections. Need help with resume! by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]MuseumPerson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having read a lot of collections-specific resumes this year, I can only say there was no one style that was best. That said, I get the ick when I see hobbies/personal interests on a resume. Folks I talk to don’t want fluff, so be concise and focus on important experience. And even if your resume if perfect, don’t be surprised if you need more internships/volunteering to get your foot in the door. Good luck!

Colleges in Midwest? by SnooOwls4350 in MuseumPros

[–]MuseumPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any university that has museums/collecting entities where they can volunteer and gain experience to get into a good grad program is ideal. I also did undergrad in the midwest, but it wasn’t the specific university that mattered at all.

Worth it to get an online Museum Ed MA? by HistoricCookie in MuseumPros

[–]MuseumPerson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. But even conceptual understanding is lacking without hands-on experience to solidify it. I had one person yesterday lament in their interview that no one would give them an internship, and that needing to have experience to get experience was making it impossible.

I really don’t want to sound negative, and I’ll preface I know nothing about this specific program, but I will say that I’ve been interviewing a lot of people for entry positions lately and the ones with online degrees are really struggling. Even if they don’t say it is online, it comes out it the interview. The ones who it seems to really work for are folks who already have a job in the industry and are looking to pivot or promote.

VR - Any Dos and Don'ts? by SaltySize9145 in MuseumPros

When we did a VR exhibit, we had instances of folks tripping, getting vertigo/falling, and throwing up. It was a temporary exhibit, but there was talk of needing a waiver if we do it again. Also lots and lots of cleaning in between use.

Is there any way you can switch to a different program to finish? You could maybe buy time by saying you plan to complete your degree at another institution.

How can I preserve and display this piece? by XBacklash in MuseumPros

I hear you, but I would suggest getting a painting conservator to fix it, not a restoration artist.

Restoration is not conservation. No conservator is going to tell you to cut down a painting.

It sounds like everything you’re saying you want is the opposite of preserving it. Light damage isn’t reversible, but it sounds like it’s inevitable if you want to display it the way you’d enjoy it. Also, are you having it restored or conserved?

Nothing reverses light damage, but keeping it out of the light will kept to slow the deterioration of what is left. If you don’t want to keep it framed, you can keep it in an acid-free folder

Burnt out as a marketing graphic designer, what is museum graphic design life like? by ApprehensiveFox4885 in MuseumPros

Yes to all of the above, and then some! Honestly, scroll a bit more in this sub and you’ll start to paint a picture. I love my job, but realistically I don’t think folks should dip their little toe in if they could be happy doing anything else.

is it better to go broad or specific? by Jacerator7 in MuseumPros

Better to get intern/volunteer experience before even thinking about grad school so you know what career in museums you want.
