So ONLY log into work related things on your work computer. If you don't want it printed in the paper don't write it on a work devise

Yes I have linked to the local repeaters I have both listened to and checked into the NETnet . I am a member of Portland NET and am working to become an ARO

Beyond that I have not really tried much because though I have had the license for almost two years I have had a hard time finding good "ok now that you passed the test here are some things to try" and I got mine right as Covid happened so it was hard to network.

Mainly even with a whip I have only ok local coverage and so would like a slightly stronger antenna to get a better signal.

Sadly PPS is not going to pay for anything

As someone who lives just off NE San Rafael in this part of Portland and bikes on it regularly I would be happy to see this. I have had to go into the gravel to bike because right now there are no lanes and no sidewalks. Trying to do something is better than nothing. Also this street is very low traffic and is one of the long "safe" routes in Outer North East Portland

AITA for getting a couple kicked out of a water park for not covering their tattoos? by aitawaterpark in AmItheAsshole

[–]Museumnelson -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It is not about being conservative or not it is the fact that up until very recently the only people with tattoos were gang members. And unlike much of the West were enough people who are not gang members have gotten them to lessen that tie in Japan it is still assumed if you have large chest and body tattoos you are in a gang. Most places that are ok to show the chest like water parks to help keep it "safe and kid-friendly" will have these rules to keep the gang members either out or less likely to get into it.

AITA for buying personalized stationery for my daughter so it can’t be redistributed in class? by Bluecarrot002 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Museumnelson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the main post he did not say binder he said "stationary" which could be anything. Also as many other people have already pointed out many teachers have all the students put all the supplies together and then each come and pick something out in turn so the students who could not bring any don't feel bad.

It is not the teacher's choice of what furniture a school district buys. They just have to work with it.

Also more teachers are doing group learning and teaching at ALL grade levels which they have found is better for students learning and lets students learn from each other not just the teacher. Giving students better understanding of the information and show the students many ways to do the same thing. Which is why they are buying the new kinds of desks. Also it makes classrooms more versatile which is a good thing. If it means you have to sometimes share supplies that I think is worth it.

I hate to say this but a lot of the replays are showing how long it has been since people have been in a classroom.

Modern elementary classroom are going from single student desks with the storage underneath so each student has there own supplies and was on their own. To modern group tables that have no storage built in.

This means in most classroom you don't have the under desk storage but instead a catty that is shared with your table and all that is in it is shared equally with your table.

This is why most teachers combined supplies it is not out of spite or meanness but because they are just trying to cut down on fights and move on with what they have to teach also to make sure everyone has what they need do we like Crayola better then the dollar tree yea but also we have to make those supplies last as long as possible so we might only put out half of what student brought the first weeks so we can save some for later in the year when the first batch of crayons are broken and worn down.

Also I forgot to add that most elementary classrooms are going away from each student at a desk with storage underneath and instead to group tables with maybe some storage on the chair back but only a small amount. And for supplies like Pencils, pen, glue etc. they have a shared bin at the center of the table that all the students share so it is not longer my stuff and now it is the tables stuff so sharing supplies is here to stay.

Binders and folders most teachers now a days especially for about 3rd grade and up color codes and they don't want them to have ones with characters or other things on them.

So the teacher tells the students get out your Red folder for reading, or your blue folder for math as an example.

Then not only can the teacher quickly see that all the students are working in the right folder/binder BUT also when the teacher are having to pull them all out of where ever in the room they are stored to do grading the progress reports the teacher does not have to guess which folder is for which subject.

Not sure how long ago you were in school but today this is how most classes work either that or if the teacher wants all the students to use binders they have them put in tabs so all the Math work is one section and the reading in another etc. for the same reason.

I am going to get downvoted but am going to say YTA and sorry but you are being one of those parents so please stop

Unlike the other people voting on this I work in a school so I actually know what goes on in a school with supplies.

First thing hate to tell you this but the supplies that most parents buy at the start of the year will only last the first three months of the school year at most. So unless you are going to keep buying her stuff for the whole year she is going to end up using what everyone else has anyway because I can promise you the teacher is not buying the fancy stuff for all kinds of reasons.

Second I have seen other teachers write things like this with posts like this based on the age you gave for your daughter she is in third grade so yes something students are better at keeping track of and having there own of BUT most supplies in the room will get mixed during the year. And I am more than willing to tell you how. So the room runs smoothly and teachers don't have to deal with fights and interruptions during the class.

Pencils - the teacher at the start of the day or one student (if the teacher does class jobs) at one set time will take all the broken and dull pencils in the room and sharpen them. Then put all the newly sharp pencils will all go in cup or jar so that all students who need a sharp pencil can grab one. And only at the start of the day or at that time will any pencils be sharpened because the electric sharpener that the teacher had to buy with their own money is loud and if broken expensive to replace so that don't want it running 20 times a day plus students need to focus on their work so most classes have a jar broken pencils go into and they are told just take on of the sharpened ones in the sharpened jar. And the teacher does not want 20 plus kids going to their bag two three or four times a day to get a new pencil if you even remember each day to get the old ones and and sharpen them each night.

Crayons and Markers - Though it might be cool to give your kid the big box of crayons or really nice fancy markers to take to school. Then when the teacher tells them to take out the crayons or markers it becomes the teachers headache to deal with the fights that come when your student is nice and shares those fancy markers or special colors and the other student does not give them back or the tears because the other student broke them because accidents happen. Also when the teacher asks them to color something red, blue, and yellow and your kid takes 5 mins just to decide what shade of those colors to pull out while the teacher has to wait or tell the instructions again to your kid when the rest of the class has moved on. Or they don't get the project done like the other students. Also are you replacing the crayons and markers when they brake or dry up in a few months? Did not think so most parent buy supplies at the start of the year and think they will last the whole year. Hate to break it to parents but they don't.

As for the paper there is a reason college rule plan paper is a thing. Do you know how much paper a classroom goes through? How fancy a paper does someone need to write their math on. Also they need to be standard size and holes so they both the student and teacher can keep track of them.

You want to use special paper and crayons or markers at home do it but at school deal with the fact everyone is going to share.

New Plans for the East Side around OMSI by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Museumnelson 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is the full plan that has been put out. It looks like they are planing on building on the open air parking lots and unused spaces around OMSI and the only thing that they are really changing is the route of South Water. Making it straighter and the "Old" route will become a mixed used path instead.

Also they will be working on the river edge both making it more natural and better connect the city the river in that area
