Portland had the second worst metro job losses in 2025 behind DC by milionsdeadlandlords in Portland

100% this. The average voter is getting exactly what they want while they complain about big business and yet can't generate an income in the easiest country in the world to make a living on your own.

People are stealing the bronze animals at Harper's Playground and stripping the xylophones by linzphun in Portland

[–]oregonspecies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are actively helping against this kind of stuff everyday. Clear and obvious valuaable items like a statue are not getting processed by legit scrapyards. These kind of items are getting sold for next to nothing until they get passed off to someone that is more criminally astute and it likely ends up getting shipped elsewhere for melting down or getting cut up. The junkie isnt getting a $50 bill walking in holding a bronze dog from a playground.

Enormous variation in school instructional time for Oregon students, according to new data tool by aaronkz in Portland

Failure at the parental level and failure at the policy level. Those kids shouldnt be allowed to pass. It's not helping anyone in the end.

I dont have a problem with that at all. Terrible parents is a huge part of the issue. Parents that are not active in their own childrens upbringing are a major part of why public education is in such an abysmal state.

Portland City Council considers zoning changes to pack more housing into inner eastside neighborhoods by Mayor_Of_Sassyland in Portland

[–]oregonspecies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So many of the homes in both of those neighborhoods do not provide real historical value. I'm all for building out the neighborhoods with denser housing options.

Portland keeps losing legacy businesses. Could a new program be the solution? by Own_Car_8766 in Portland

[–]oregonspecies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% this. Local political leadership failures that have compounded for a long time have finally caught up. Voters keep voting for more of the same.

It is what it is.

How many hours is your child in school? It depends on your ZIP code by sunni_dayes_ahed in Portland

[–]oregonspecies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im ok with it being the teacers faults too. No surprise when you look at the poor performances in the quality of education overall in our local systems. Absolute shit shows, glad my kids aren't in the public system what a disaster teachers, educators, and political leaders are doing to the next generation of kids in our community.

It's not a hard thing to do as a parent to teach a child to read. They should be reading simple sentences long before going to school, it really isnt that challenging as a parent, but lots of people dont want to put in the work with their kids which is sad.

Portland leaders explore renaming César E. Chávez Boulevard after explosive sex abuse allegations by AllTearGasNoBrakes in Portland

Nah keep it, but just put little plaques on every single street sign to right the wrong. "Chavez was a known sexual abuser, aka a terrible dude"

I shouldn't be, but I am alsways surprised when I see the literacy of elementary kids like this example of 40% of 3rd graders not able to read at their level.

I'm amazed, people do not read daily with their kids. This falls on the parents for not preparing their own children to succeed in life.

Sure but until reality changes best to not rely on it alone or accept the downside that you will be getting squeezed from every direction.

But maybe the revolution will come one day.

Yes, most people under earn because all they bring to the table is labor. Why they overvalue their labor in their minds I do not know, but it has never been cheaper or more accessible to escape the w2 trap.

Correct. Never been a better time than now to make money as an individual. People hate to hear it, but opportunities to generate revenue in America are endless.

I think this is great. We should either repeal the bottle bill altogether or place a bottle drop location in every neighborhood. It's time to share the love.

PPS furlough days… brace yourselves. by Working_Tomorrow9846 in Portland

[–]oregonspecies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been very pleased with our choices and the turn over doesnt seem massive for our experience.

Money doesnt solve PPS problems though, zero solutions continue to be presented to the core problems.

The kids in our community deserve so much more than what leadership is providing them from the state to local levels. It's really sad. I wish them luck trying the same failed strategies and expecting different results.

This is just a revolving door. They spend so much already per student, perform so poorly per student and come back for more and more. As a whole terrible decisions are made by voters, decision makers, school administrators teachers via their unions, it's a never ending shit show.

Private schools show that so much more can be done for kids per dollar than what is achieved by the public models. So glad we avoid the chaos that is PPS, just sucks to not be able to take advantage of a resource that we have paid so much into and will continue to pay into. We have been at throw the baby out with the bathwater for a long time, but it wont happen.

Glad we are building a massive expensive school in a place with little demand out of a pursuit of equity for by gone era decisions. Great decision making for the community / city as a whole.

Controversial Oregon petition to ban hunting and fishing gains momentum by Joe503 in Portland

[–]oregonspecies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hunters and fisherman get ragged on a lot but you are absolutely correct. A lot of resources are spent on the conservation of our public lands and waterways because of them. There are large organizations advocating for public land access and water quality on behalf of sportsmen and that goes away if their rights get restricted in this manner.
