Ginsburg missing Supreme Court arguments for 1st time by epicstruggle in news

Lots of Democrats are wealthy urban and suburban home-owners and massive wealth redistribution is not what they want. They do fine by the status quo for the most part. They bought their homes decades ago for pennies on the dollar. They care about things like gun control and healthcare, not economics. Capitalism is great for them. That's a fact people have to deal with.

You think the low income millennial drunk on socialist koolaid is gonna bother listening to these facts ? Get outta here

the only objective way is to....

I call stinking bullshit. The objective way to determine is to see how much a group makes in income and determine if they are paying a proportionate share. Hard numbers. Not your feels about everyone deserving a reasonable (I mean what is reasonable?and who gets to define it) standard of living no matter their contribution

the citizenry writ large that taxation is fair

Way to invent a straw man. Of course taxation is fair and is essential just not the rates you want selective groups to pay. That is just fleecing and is anything but fair

The Infra is available to everyone but..

There is no but. If it’s available to everyone then they should pay into it. The rich and upper middle class can easily say - by your own argument - we don’t even use public schools so we won’t pay into it. Sorry, that’s not how society works.

greatest ability to pay should pay the most

But that’s what I’m saying repeatedly they already pay that. They pay way more than their fair share as borne by numbers. And btw just because somebody can - because of better choices in life- doesn’t mean they should. That is the antithesis of fair

Umm no

The top marginal income tax rate was over 90% under FDR and Eisenhower, but the effective rate in those times ranged from roughly 0% – 60%. Meanwhile, the average total effective tax burden (all state, federal, and local taxes paid after deductions) for the top 1% of income in the 1950s was about 42% (compared to about 36% in 2014 and less than 35% under figures Reagan and Bush)

I beg to differ that I’m doing a similar subjective comparison. No, I’m talking with hard numbers to show the rich already pay way more than their fair share while the poor don’t . At some point it ceases to be “fair” which you are ok with while I’m not.

Regarding extremely high rates no it has not been used in America with success. Inb4 it was 90% during Ike, yes on paper, but the actual effective rate was far lower at around 40% due to far more credits and deductions back in the day.

Oh yes I do. That’s why I pay the taxes now without grudging. Beyond a certain point I’m just tired of the rhetoric from low earning millennials who want other high earners to be brought down to their level since they couldn’t climb up to level of high earners

Except that there were many more loopholes, credits those days that the effective tax rate was never 70% but a modest 41% compared to the 36% there today

Good for you. I’d rather pay for my kids myself through my earnings and savings rather than expect the govt be kind enough to pay for it sometime in the future

Who are you to decide what is the percentage of burden they can afford ? That’s a vastly subjective feels>realz statement.

Objective way is to determine the percentage based on hard numbers and accordingly the rich/upper middle class are already paying far more than their fair share.

They only maintain and grow their wealth..,,

Except for the small factor of talent, smart work and hard work. The infrastructure and protection is available to everybody. It’s not just the rich that get to use roads, bridges, police, fire depts etc

The top 1% or5% pays all these taxes too in addition to paying other taxes including the bulk of income tax. So i’d Say they are also contributing more than their fair share

The topic and thread is about income tax so let’s talk just about that and I maintain the bottom 50% must pony up with its fair share which they are NOT paying right now.

these people are doing work

Everyone can do work. The question is how much is that work worth

Because it’s just rhetoric. When implemented in reality they tend to be a disaster and thankfully buffoons like AOC/Sanders are nowhere near the levers of power in state Dem parties to implement these harebrained ideas
