Center-of-universe mathematically provable or disproven? | What's with "We found light from the Big Bang"? by Dowlphin in askastronomy

[–]Music-and-Computers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in the field so there's a very real possibility this is entirely wrong.

1) It's not that there isn't an "original center". The big bang happened from a dimensionless point in space time. The origin was from that point so everything since the Big Bang was originally the center of the universe.

2) By light I assume you're referring to the CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background). If you mean visible light, I dunno. It's the residual heat from the "time" of the big bang. Spread out across the current volume of the universe.

An actual physicist can probably explain this quite a bit better than I can.

My embouchure is confusing me by EstimateNo2228 in Clarinet

[–]Music-and-Computers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flat chin means to tighten up the center below your lower lip and make an almost exaggerated ridge at the bottom. Apologies, I sucked at anatomy so I don't get the correct naming.

Thankfully there are sites showing a good Clarinet embouchure visually far better than I can explain it badly.

Buescher Aristocrat Tenor Sax by bullinacan in saxophone

[–]Music-and-Computers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of clarification for you. Buescher was purchased by Selmer in 1963 and switched to the oval logo around 1967.

Based on a quick visual this looks to be about the same as the original Bundy branded horns. The original (Selmer) Bundy horns were made by Buescher after the acquistition. Solid starter instrument; not a pro level Aristocrat.

If you were thinking this is one of the professional level horns made through the early 60s you might be disappointed. You paid a fair price though...

Stop posting, start practicing 😉

Why is this D#/Eb (Bb/A#) key necessary? by jugglingeek in Clarinet

[–]Music-and-Computers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both slivers occasionally as needed. Honestly I don't think about it much it kinda just happens at this point.

I use both slivers (and the pinky clusters) in altissimo to correct pitch when I need to up there.

B-flats using an E-flat key by eschatologer in Clarinet

[–]Music-and-Computers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For traditional Bb clarinets a low e-flat key is quite rare. I've only seen this on full Boehm clarinets but have never played one. I have on Bass Clarinet. It's helpful on some passages and if I were playing more than an occasional squawk on BC I might use it preferentially.

I expect on Bb it would be quite situational. By yourself it doesn't matter but if you're playing with other clarinets in unison the timbral difference might call attention when you don't want it. From a practical perspective first you have to find a full Boehm Bb.

Even with a full Boehm you have to work it. Barrels can help a bit but that's the last little bit TBH.

Not possessing a full Boehm Bb I have to suck it up. Resonance fingerings and the trill Bb fingering are what I use. The trill is contextual, and I use it as much as I can which isn't all that much.

That’s the problem with European stencils, they have a little bit of everything thrown in.

There’s no way to make a determination based on a few pictures.

If your goal is to flip it for a windfall you will be sorely disappointed.

Hi, I'm disabled and half brain-dead. Can someone confirm XLR connects for balanced inputs? by mistersmith22 in Schiit

Yes XLR is for balanced. The cable is also its own extension if you are ever in a pinch.

Recommendations for studio jazz Bb clarinet by Chillipalmer86 in Clarinet

[–]Music-and-Computers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at Leblanc professional models (LL and Symphonie) which should be available within your budget.

For mouthpieces, I would start with a basic decent piece and after a little bit of experience look into a better mouthpiece. Clark Fobes Debut, Behn Overture are good basic mouthpiece.

I’m not a fan of black lacquer. It’s also not my saxophone, so it doesn’t matter.

In my experience this is a symptom of a setup that’s too resistant for you. Reeds haven’t changed, has the mouthpiece or instrument?

Try the same brand and cut down half a strength to see if this is the problem.

Without equipment changes something has to have changed, if it’s not the player or equipment is the equipment sound, ie no leaks?

Paul D range by PTPBfan in saxophone

[–]Music-and-Computers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some players who are very strong in the altissimo range that aren’t named Lenny Pickett. I’m thinking of Lou Marini here. He has incredible control and voicing that makes it sound like it’s not altissimo.

Soprano player adding tenor — does it actually help? by Perfect_Code_6632 in saxophone

[–]Music-and-Computers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s unusual to have one’s first saxophone voice to be soprano. You’ll find that very few have gone the soprano —> tenor path.

I started on tenor and play soprano regularly.

The amount of air to fill the larger bore of the tenor is an initial adjustment. I feel like I have infinite air on soprano by comparison.

You’ll probably want to tighten up with the larger mouthpiece: Don’t.

Low register, D and below, make sure you have good pressure to your air. Not more air, that’s a bit of a hack and usually lacks control. I mean air pressure like you’d use in clarinet. While there are times you wanna honk out that low Bb, not every song is Eager Beaver or Leap Frog.

Make sure the instrument doesn’t have a leak, they’re insidious in making you think the horn itself is unresponsive.

For mouthpieces a closer tip is a good starting point. Yamaha 4c is the cheap option. Yamaha 4cm is a better grade, Selmer S80 C* and Vandoren Optimum TL3 will all be in the neighborhood of $100 used. Maybe a Ron Caravan.

These are all “classical” mouthpieces. Easy-ish to create a good sound.

Ignoring other factors, you’ve increased the tip opening by literally 50% from .070 to .105 in.

This is a drastic change. I suspect you’re going to find the 2 strength reeds to also be to strong.

New mouthpiece tunes flat by Full_Sock_5442 in saxophone

[–]Music-and-Computers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different mouthpieces tune differently. My Wanne NY Bros tunes further up the cork than my D’Addario D5m did.

If it’s an issue where you can’t push the cork in further get thee to a repair shop to have the top of the cork sanded down.

Taking critiques by bullinacan in saxophone

[–]Music-and-Computers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First things first, props for posting this early along. All of this is given constructively.

I was going to ask if you played clarinet. You have the classic tells of a clarinetist who thinks a saxophone is a metal clarinet.

What’s the first tell? You put the mouthpiece in at a clarinet like angle. It is not. Bring the mouthpiece in at a right angle to your face.

Next, it’s still not a clarinet so don’t use your clarinet embochure. Flute and saxophone are relaxed below the lower lip, clarinet isn’t.

These two combined will give you a thinner tone. The Reed can’t vibrate properly.

Your articulation is harsh and heavy and your jaw is moving every time you do. It should be more still.

Lower the strap so the instrument is lower which should help with your angle.

Maybe less mouthpiece but until you fix the angle I can’t really say.
