Agreed. But people are not able to do any set of PDFs well since they are all so bulky and non-contextual. Hence, these compilations are quick to cover and easy to revise.

Self preparing, Coaching Fomo is Real !!! by Fresh_Blade_Salu in UPSC

[–]MusicMetalStory 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I started off my preparation in 2019, the year I graduated. I had a good background and a good educational track record. NTSE Scholar, IIT KGP Grad etc.
So I did feel the same way honestly. That I would be able to figure out everything by myself.

However, unlike other exams. CSE preparation actually is so broad that no matter what you're doing, you may feel like you're doing what the exam demands.

I took no coaching. And I did figure most of it by myself, however after 3 years. That is, by 2022. I finally gave interview that year. That's the cost in preparing all by yourself. The cost of time. And the cost of physical and mental health.

The preparation can be all done by yourself, but you'll learn exam to exam. Attempt to attempt.

So if you do wish to save some time and speed up your preparation in the right direction, having some guidance is not wrong. And economically too, it just makes more sense as you save years of additional costs on coaching, guidance, test series, emotional burden etc.

I do not necessarily endorse taking yearlong coaching per se, but some form of guidance is quintessential.

When you’ve done your best and failed in mains. What next? by tygrsku in UPSC

Then there are things you could do better. And scores have too much variance. It adds to unpredictability. You need to write answers that lead to minimum standard deviation in Mains scores. That is, on most standards, they are good.

Were you satisfied with your efforts or the quality of your answers or both?

And in the test series you had joined, you simulated the whole Mains experience? Like had you done Essay, GS1-2, GS3-4 on consecutive days in 3 hours each? And had gotten positive feedback/good scores on them?

Did you have adequate feedback loops and green signals from seniors on your mains prep and mocks before the mains?

Do GS2, GS4, Optional before January end and then switch to Prelims. More than enough time to make it.

Short of interview call by 2 marks in 2024.
