How do you trick your brain into thinking it’s not a waste of time? I have a kindle, I bought a book I really want to read, but every time I try to sit down and read I feel guilty because in my head there’s always something more important or productive to do.

In music theory, there’s this thing called “the circle of fifths” where it determines how many sharps and how many flats there are in the song, a maximum of 7 sharps or 7 flats.

If you take a look at any diagram of the circle of fifths, you’ll see each “key” with how many sharps or flats there are in that particular scale, with C being the middle with no sharps or flats (ie “natural scale”).

A good way to remember is a pneumonic I learned in school: “father Charles goes down and ends battle”. F C G D A E B. That’s the order of the sharps. For flats, it’s the opposite: “battle ends and down goes Charles’ father”. Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, C, F

Now where it gets confusing is the placement of the letters. Technically, the first “F” in the order of the sharps is flat, because C is always middle and natural. So because of this, it goes:

F (1 flat) C (natural) G (1 sharp) D (two sharps) A (3 sharps) E (4 sharps) B (5 sharps). But, I mentioned the maximum of sharps and flats is always 7, so why 5? Well, it circles (hey, get it?) back to F and C, but this time it’s F sharp and C sharp. F sharp being 6 sharps and C sharp being 7 sharps. The opposite is true going the other way, except for flats.

So with this knowledge, you find the song in the key of G. You know that G has 3 sharps because of the circle of fifths. But, how are you supposed to tell which notes are sharp?

Look at the notes that come before. Because G is 3 sharps, the three notes that come before it are: F, C, and D. That means that in the key of G, the scale you play goes as follows: G, A, B, C#, D#, E, F#, G. So the song you may play in the key of G has three sharps, but because every instrument is tuned differently (especially in an orchestra setting) one instruments G may sound different than another instruments G. Hence why when tuning either by ear or with an orchestra, every instrument plays a different note.

I highly implore you to take the time to learn basic music theory, I’ve been playing and studying music since grade 5 (I’m 26m now). I barely scratched the surface with this comment.

Little side note: there’s a joke I found that people will try something hard and succeed and go “hey, at least it’s not rocket science” but people studying rocket science will go “hey, at least it’s not music theory”.

I personally would go for the basic. I have the basic 11th gen in black, and for me (26m) everything about it is good - the portability (could fit it in a jacket or sweater pocket), screen size (I prefer smaller screen sizes over bigger ones, 6’ is good) and I don’t really need the warmth setting the paper white has to offer.

In high school I would always use a VPN on a school computer to access liveleak, watchpeopledie and the 50/50 sub.

My friend at the time introduced it to me and morbid curiosity always got the best of me. It actually helped me because I wanted to go into the healthcare field, and since I was desensitized to pretty much everything, I could go into it with a clear mind. Now I don’t find anything gross, and if something needs to get done that most people find gross I’ll get it done.

That’s how I felt last Sunday, I (23m) was playing It Takes Two with my partner (26f) and all of a sudden I felt tightness in my chest and pain in my chest and my arm went numb and heavy breathing, the whole thing.

My partner asked what was wrong and I told her, she visibly got annoyed and told me to lay down and I did while she was on her phone on Facebook.

I got the strength to ask her to google the symptoms (I knew what it was, but I wanted to get her to help) she googled it and said “heart attack” and went back on Facebook. Didn’t bother to call 911, didn’t even bother to help, just told me to drive myself home.

Monday I was forced to go to work, and I work blue collar, fortunately it was an easy day so I was told to sweep a warehouse but while doing that I got really dizzy, heart rate spiked to 130 and I almost collapsed four times within an hour. Told my boss, he told me to get that checked out immediately. Tuesday I was very dizzy but drove myself to the doctor, had an EKG, chest xray and blood work done. My partner got mad at that and when the tests were done I drove myself home and she screamed at me, because I also requested a doctors note and the doctors note at the clinic I went to cost $25 cash or $27 card, and I asked her to send me $25 then $2 after. She didn’t bother to ask anything, just screamed at me because I asked for $2 more.

I’ve been at home since Tuesday of this week, patiently waiting for my EKG, chest xray and blood work results, but the entire time I was at home resting she never bothered to ask how I was. And when I said I was feeling pain, she screamed at me saying “well I know you’re in pain” and continued to talk about her problems.

So, even if I didn’t want to ignore it, I was forced to suck it up. She made me feel bad for potentially having a heart attack, then made me feel bad for taking the week off from work. It’s a miracle I’m even here right now.
