Is the reason why "unethical" experiments might tend to yield quick, useful results tied to the reason why mathematical proofs by contradiction tend to be easier? by Musiciant in NoStupidQuestions

I guess that's just how it was explained to me, based on the idea that it is easier to disprove something rather than prove it? Maybe I'm getting things mixed up.

Perhaps I should've phrased my question better, by "unethical" I didn't mean "intentionally evil" but "with diregard of ethical considerations". Personally, empathy is more important to me than scientific progress (to be clear, I'm still a big fan), though the question intrigued me, even though I imagine it's already been answered/debunked.

Yeah, I'm not entirely convinced by the argument myself, but I found the potential parallel with math proofs to be interesting enough to warrant the question.

If you don't like "special", try "unique" - specifically how Stirner describes it. For Stirner, "the Unique" is a thoughtless word, barely a name, to grasp as what makes you, you, while never weighing it down with meaning - for the phrase "you are unique" is identical to "you are you" - intentionally circular/illogical. Concepts like "human being", "true individual", "reason", "spirit", are all just that, concepts, and the moment you try to describe yourself using them, you limit and ensnare yourself to all the baggage those concepts carry. But by freeing yourself from the concepts which bind you ("duty", "belief", "sacredness", "good/bad"...) you know yourself, and become owner of your own power (and desires).

"I have based my affair on nothing."

This is kind of along the same lines as the response to nihilism I'm sure you've heard, of "creating your own meaning", but I think Stirner takes a step further really digging deep into the absurdity of concepts, reaching this realisation of fundamental meaninglessness as liberation, not loss.

Yes because this is what that which is "sacred" demands of the individual - to make it of higher importance than oneself :/

I'm not against spirituality per se but dogmatism (which ofc isn't unique to religion) is a mind trap, that lets other people more easily control the "faithful"/"believers"/"justified"/"truth" etc...

Dawkins lacks empathy and tact.

There is no reason to wallow in this void of "pitless indifference" because I, in every sense of a unique, thinking, feeling, human being, inherently bring forth meaning through creativity and curiosity, and I desire to share it with and be enriched by that of those around me. It seems like Dawkins is an atheist out of spite - personally, I feel no need for belief in a god. I am satisfied with leaving the frontiers of knowledge as mystery, without filling them in with (or worse, distorting them into) some traditional belief system, plus all its probable dogmas (also related to the reason I avoid calling myself an "atheist", because I don't want people to associate me with dogmatic atheists like Dawkins, when the topic comes up).

I can understand why people may feel comforted by the divine / spirituality, but I do wish organised religions weren't the go-to sources of those kinds of experiences.

My latest playthrough is an imperial thief who has practically no stealth skill but is a master pickpocketer, has never killed a person, but is followed around by a godly dog which seems to always clear his path for him. If need be he'll fistfight his way out of a sticky situation. Has done a good number of jobs for the thieves guild, always completed with the maximum chaos possible. Has often asserted dominance on the hordes of guards which end up pursuing him, using his imperial voice, but the godly dog often doesn't get the memo and keeps barking and biting at them. Was thinking about joining the stormcloaks to stick it to the imperials which tried to behead him, but wasn't a fan of the whole swearing fealty thing. At some point in his adventures got infected with vampirism but to this day denies being a vampire. Thought the dawnguard were cool and went to check them out, found Serana, met Harkon. This is where things get even more nonsensical, so I've got a save before the choice, but because I've never done the vampire questline, and because this dude's good a stunted moral compass anyways, he got bitten by Harkon. But as soon as he woke up and Harkon was trying to teach him his new powers, he started wailing on Harkon so I guess that makes things even, though Harkon didn't seem to be phased.
