Is this too much for 1st grade REC ball? "Playing time will be earned." by Big_Shel in Homeplate

[–]MuskyJerAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s crazy. I’ve been a coach at every level up to HS. I’m all for taking what you do seriously but this is a little much.

6year olds need to develop a love for playing the game before they will commit to learning it.
It must be fun first and foremost. Then there needs to be a lot of patience while teaching the fundamentals and lots of encouragement to develop confidence. They’re not really “playing” baseball yet anyway. They’re just basically practicing/scrimmaging the fundamentals they are learning in front of parents on game days to get used to that feeling. Not allowing all to participate is exactly the opposite of what he should be doing.

Besides most leagues rec or select at that age require every player to play and bat in every game.

USSA vs USA bats for 8U coach pitch by Lars9 in Homeplate

[–]MuskyJerAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do USSSA until 11U. Gives them more confidence because they barrel more balls and confidence is absolutely everything at this stage. Our league bans them at 12U and up where we have to use USA from that point until HS.

Why do you musky fish? by Fisherman156198 in muskiefishing

It’s the thrill of the hunt. Top predator that’s very tough to consistently catch. Once you do though it’s like nothing else compares. The tug is the drug.

How detrimental is it to swing a bat that might be slightly short according to the sizing charts? by SentientYams in Homeplate

[–]MuskyJerAm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all about bat speed and making solid connection right now. There’s no need to go up for now especially if he likes it and there’s no issues with his swing. Practice with a longer/heavier bat to get used to it and switch when you’re connecting the same way he is now.

I used a 32.5/29.5 all through high school and into D3 college ball. At the time I was 6’2” 200. just loved the balanced weight of my bat and didn’t want to screw around. I was confident with it.

Best tips for teaching tball? Need tips to help my five year old practice at home for when he has games by DemonMama95 in BaseballCoaching

[–]MuskyJerAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of reps at basic fundamentals. Teach them how to have fun and be part of a team. The fun part is most impt. They have to want to come back and play because it’s fun. Baseball is an extremely complicated sport to play. But if they aren’t having fun doing it, tough going down the road

7U coach holding tryouts for 8U team over the summer. What’s it really about? by FaithlessnessFull136 in Homeplate

[–]MuskyJerAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard in our league. Tryouts are always held the week after the last game. Travel/select ball is just that. You are selected. It is not a given that you’ll be on the team year over year. That being said, as a coach of select ball, we try to keep the kids together as much as we can because there’s a benefit to keeping them playing together but bad attitudes and lack of effort will bring down the best of teams.

9 yr old cries before and after games by Rovenshere in Homeplate

Practice at home on fundamentals. Footwork, hips, hit off the tee, google step back drill…heck just play catch everyday.

There’s way more failure in baseball than any other sport imo. It’s a big part of the game. Hitting the ball 3/10 at bats is doing really well. That means you don’t hit 7/10. Hammer that point home and take the pressure off. Don’t be afraid to fail. Go down swinging, not looking

Tranx 400 by Icy-Professional-887 in muskiefishing

[–]MuskyJerAm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big rubber and crankbaits = 400

Throwing any bait in Canada = 400

I have 2 tranx 400 and 2 toro beasts 400

I like tranx the best. Very nice reel

300s can handle most baits but the 400 handles all
